It is a sad state of affairs in our society that a man of faith is condemned and vilified for supporting millions of women that chose to stay at home and care for and nuture their family. More women are chosing to be stay at home mothers, data shows that rate increased 10% from 2022-2023. Butker said verbatim "Many of you will have successful careers but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about marriage and the children you will bring into the world" Butker NEVER told what path to chose. If you are outraged he was NOT talking to you he was talking to other women with traditional Catholic values. He encouraged men to step in the family and do big things, and the how the absent of fathers in the home has led to the crime and violence that is plaguing our country. Why are we devaluing the role of women that stay at home and care for the family. This is the thing we are outraged about in our crumbling society?

Harrison Butker’s commencement speech was insulting to women. He actually showed pride in the fact that his wife did not pursue a career and chose to be a homemaker and referred to Taylor Swift, a highly accomplished, independent, single woman not by her name but as “his teammate’s girlfriend” as if she exists only because she is “his teammate’s girlfriend” during his speech! In my opinion Joy Behar said it best when saying that he has “mommy issues”. His mother is a highly accomplished physicist and while growing up he probably felt ignored by her as she was busy either pursuing a career or working on professional projects. This brings to mind the false and twisted image of Catholicism and Catholic this guy and conservative Catholics insist on and unfortunately have insisted on spreading and enforcing. He sounds more like an evangelical stating that “Jews killed Jesus” something that Catholics definitely do not believe and never did. Pontius Pilot was a coward. He knew that Jesus was innocent but could not handle the pressure he was getting from the Jews, so he condemned Jesus anyway. This is stated in both the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicine Creed that we say at mass. I was raised Catholic and I went to Catholic school for elementary and high school. Although I do not consider myself religious or what is considered to be a devout Catholic, I still consider myself to be Catholic (although I do not agree with some things, which include the type of principles and values Butker and the administration at Benedict College share and want to enforce upon all catholics) and as such and because that is not what I was thought, I felt I had to weigh in. Just to make it clear, my intention is not to convert anybody or pick a fight with those that disagree but to show with actual references (watch the Videos by Casey Cole a Franciscan friar) that this interpretation of Catholicism is the opposite of what it really is in its essence. I would like to start saying that my maternal grandparents were devout Catholics. Nevertheless my grandfather helped my grandmother with house chores and all seven children of theirs were also thought to do their part regardless of gender. As a result my uncles definitely will not stay hungry waiting for women to cook for them because they learned how to cook. I also recall seeing my youngest uncle preparing baby formula and feeding his new born son when my aunt was at work just like many other Catholics do. I mentioned this just to show how unrealistic and out of touch this guy and those that think like him are. And I am not the only one who disagrees with this false representation of Catholicism. The sisters of Mount Scholastica who are Benedictines themselves and know the teachings of the Church very well (watch “ Which Catholic Spirituality Are You?” to learn about religious orders), felt insulted and have already rebuked this rhetoric. So to those of you that are either not Catholic and think that this is part of the teachings of the Church, or were raised Catholic under such ideology, you are wrong (please, watch the videos “Did God Create Women Inferior to Men?” and “Is God a Man” to get an insight of what I am referring to). This is rather a twisted, conservative interpretation of Catholic teachings, that sounds more like a G.O.P political agenda than anything else,specially when it comes to the role of women and in respect to individuals with non-traditional sexual orientations. Unfortunately the Catholic Church which is the original Church founded by Jesus Christ and later led by his apostles and theirs disciples based on his teachings(made up of branches that include the Roman Catholic Church in the West,the Orthodox Church in the East, the Coptic Catholic Church in the Middle East, the Ethiopian Catholic Church in Ethiopia, etc. Please, watch “Which Type of Catholic Are You” to get an idea of what I am referring to) was founded by human beings and by being such just like any institution, it can be subject to harm. So when it comes to the Roman Catholic Church which is the branch of Catholicism being discussed here, its history shows numerous examples which range from things such as corruption to this type of mentality, ideology and behavior that unfortunately is not new within the Church. No wonder Catholic churches here in the U.S. and in Europe are empty. Pope Francis wants to fix the damage done during centuries by previous popes which include this cult-like type of extremist mindset and behavior but he has received a lot of pushback. For example, he has ordered all priests to welcome same-sex couples to their churches and bless them, which unfortunately conservative bishops including the one from either Kenia or Nigeria (I do not remember) refused to do. In an interview he has also asked American Catholics to leave politics out of religion. He has also assigned women to high positions in the Church, which was either never done before or was very rare. Then, I hear that in a secretive meeting with cardinals Pope Francis used an offensive term to refer to gays and I lose hope because it seems to me that he is either lying about his willingness to reform the Church for the better or he is simply giving up fighting for what the real principles and values of the teachings of Jesus Christ are. Regardless, I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt accepting what some in his defense stated that “ although he is of Italian descent and can speak Italian fluently, he used the offensive term thinking that it was appropriate and non-offensive”. I say this because they’re people within the church that want him out and will distort anything he says and does when they see an opportunity ( please, watch “ Pope Francis is Diving the Church. Here’s Why”. In my opinion the Roman Catholic Church has been in need of significant reform for quite sometime. Will it happen soon? Will it even happen? I guess only time will tell. All I know is that unlike those that are in charge of the leadership of the Church, many members of the clergy (although they might be the minority) actually practice and live by the principles and values they preach and hopefully their efforts can really undo all the damage done during centuries.

He’s a Catholic, making a speech to other Catholics. This is what is taught to Catholics and most Christians. I see nothing wrong with what he said. The gift of being able to create life is the most amazing thing a women could have. I live in a 99% Catholic country (hyperbolic) and this would literally never fly. I’ve also been to several 99% Catholic countries (more accurate) where this would be at least as controversial as it apparently is in the United States. The current Pope has called for less gender discrimination globally, and tons of high-level Catholics even think women should be elegible for priesthood. The idea that this speech is one that naturally arises from modern Catholic thought, and isn’t just a reflection of this guy’s misogyny (though perhaps a particularly Catholic brand of misogyny) is ridiculous

No but he does have his right to freedom of speech, he lterally exercised that right at a commencement speech where he expressed his belief (again beliefs I didn't entirely agree with). @user-yc8ve8ys6e Yeah I didn't like being told myself and others are committing a deadly sin because we're gay and I'm sure a lot of women didn't like being told the only fulfilling life is the life of a mother especially the women that just graduated after spending about 4 years to get their degree, but I imagine since this is being done in front of a Catholic College that evidently have these beliefs, that's why he didn't get heavy boos and why he felt the requirement to make 99% of his speech biblical and his beliefs, they match up heavily with that school. I still stand by my free speech view, but I will say this, it's insane to me that anyone who claims to have such a close relationship with God could be so hateful and judgmental. It is a sad state of affairs in our society that a man of faith is condemned and vilified for supporting millions of women that chose to stay at home and care for and nuture their family. More women are chosing to be stay at home mothers, data shows that rate increased 10% from 2022-2023. Butker said verbatim "Many of you will have successful careers but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about marriage and the children you will bring into the world" Butker NEVER told what path to chose. If you are outraged he was NOT talking to you he was talking to other women with traditional Catholic values. He encouraged men to step in the family and do big things, and the how the absent of fathers in the home has led to the crime and violence that is plaguing our country. Why are we devaluing the role of women that stay at home and care for the family. This is the thing we are outraged about in our crumbling society?

Harrison Butker’s commencement speech was insulting to women. He actually showed pride in the fact that his wife did not pursue a career and chose to be a homemaker and referred to Taylor Swift, a highly accomplished, independent, single woman not by her name but as “his teammate’s girlfriend” as if she exists only because she is “his teammate’s girlfriend” during his speech! In my opinion Joy Behar said it best when saying that he has “mommy issues”. His mother is a highly accomplished physicist and while growing up he probably felt ignored by her as she was busy either pursuing a career or working on professional projects.
This brings to mind the false and twisted image of Catholicism and Catholic this guy and conservative Catholics insist on and unfortunately have insisted on spreading and enforcing. He sounds more like an evangelical stating that “Jews killed Jesus” something that Catholics definitely do not believe and never did. Pontius Pilot was a coward. He knew that Jesus was innocent but could not handle the pressure he was getting from the Jews, so he condemned Jesus anyway. This is stated in both the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicine Creed that we say at mass.
I was raised Catholic and I went to Catholic school for elementary and high school. Although I do not consider myself religious or what is considered to be a devout Catholic, I still consider myself to be Catholic (although I do not agree with some things, which include the type of principles and values Butker and the administration at Benedict College share and want to enforce upon all catholics) and as such and because that is not what I was thought, I felt I had to weigh in. Just to make it clear, my intention is not to convert anybody or pick a fight with those that disagree but to show with actual references (watch the Videos by Casey Cole a Franciscan friar) that this interpretation of Catholicism is the opposite of what it really is in its essence.
I would like to start saying that my maternal grandparents were devout Catholics. Nevertheless my grandfather helped my grandmother with house chores and all seven children of theirs were also thought to do their part regardless of gender. As a result my uncles definitely will not stay hungry waiting for women to cook for them because they learned how to cook. I also recall seeing my youngest uncle preparing baby formula and feeding his new born son when my aunt was at work just like many other Catholics do. I mentioned this just to show how unrealistic and out of touch this guy and those that think like him are. And I am not the only one who disagrees with this false representation of Catholicism. The sisters of Mount Scholastica who are Benedictines themselves and know the teachings of the Church very well (watch “ Which Catholic Spirituality Are You?” to learn about religious orders), felt insulted and have already rebuked this rhetoric. So to those of you that are either not Catholic and think that this is part of the teachings of the Church, or were raised Catholic under such ideology, you are wrong (please, watch the videos “Did God Create Women Inferior to Men?” and “Is God a Man” to get an insight of what I am referring to). This is rather a twisted, conservative interpretation of Catholic teachings, that sounds more like a G.O.P political agenda than anything else,specially when it comes to the role of women and in respect to individuals with non-traditional sexual orientations. Unfortunately the Catholic Church which is the original Church founded by Jesus Christ and later led by his apostles and theirs disciples based on his teachings(made up of branches that include the Roman Catholic Church in the West,the Orthodox Church in the East, the Coptic Catholic Church in the Middle East, the Ethiopian Catholic Church in Ethiopia, etc. Please, watch “Which Type of Catholic Are You” to get an idea of what I am referring to) was founded by human beings and by being such just like any institution, it can be subject to harm. So when it comes to the Roman Catholic Church which is the branch of Catholicism being discussed here, its history shows numerous examples which range from things such as corruption to this type of mentality, ideology and behavior that unfortunately is not new within the Church. No wonder Catholic churches here in the U.S. and in Europe are empty.
Pope Francis wants to fix the damage done during centuries by previous popes which include this cult-like type of extremist mindset and behavior but he has received a lot of pushback. For example, he has ordered all priests to welcome same-sex couples to their churches and bless them, which unfortunately conservative bishops including the one from either Kenia or Nigeria (I do not remember) refused to do. In an interview he has also asked American Catholics to leave politics out of religion. He has also assigned women to high positions in the Church, which was either never done before or was very rare. Then, I hear that in a secretive meeting with cardinals Pope Francis used an offensive term to refer to gays and I lose hope because it seems to me that he is either lying about his willingness to reform the Church for the better or he is simply giving up fighting for what the real principles and values of the teachings of Jesus Christ are. Regardless, I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt accepting what some in his defense stated that “ although he is of Italian descent and can speak Italian fluently, he used the offensive term thinking that it was appropriate and non-offensive”. I say this because they’re people within the church that want him out and will distort anything he says and does when they see an opportunity ( please, watch “ Pope Francis is Diving the Church. Here’s Why”.
In my opinion the Roman Catholic Church has been in need of significant reform for quite sometime. Will it happen soon? Will it even happen? I guess only time will tell. All I know is that unlike those that are in charge of the leadership of the Church, many members of the clergy (although they might be the minority) actually practice and live by the principles and values they preach and hopefully their efforts can really undo all the damage done during centuries.
