I guess Kerr wanted to play KD, because of the past in GS and I guess Lebron just had his impact on saying, hey I'm joining the team but I'm always playing no matter what, "le GM" has an impact even there xD.
In those kinds of games you shouldn't bench a player which was consistent and always available as Tatum was. And the other strange thing is to put someone in the lineup who didn't play not even a single minute... but I agree, giving him garbage minutes in the end would make it even worse.
In terms of derrick white, in my opinion that shouldn't be mentioned from anyone as a reason why Tatum didn't play, that has nothing to do with it.
But what I also see is, media and people are just making an elefant out of that. relax, it's just one game and we don't know all the background and all that stuff. people overthink those things.

Doing Tatum for being a solid teammate on an Olympic Team is crazy. He cheered his team on and never acted unprofessional. He won a gold medal and just won a title as one of the main players on that team. Great season. 🏅🏆🍀
The funny part is that on the Hoop Collective they said this could be the summer of Tatum a few months ago. He could win the title, win finals MVP, then go on to win the olympics in a vital role for team USA. Instead what happened is that he failed in the finals and had to be rescued, didn't win finals MVP, then in the olympics he's a bench warmer, and that wont change. There is no reason - imo - for Tatum to not play... he is the easiest player in the league to fit into any system and with all the guards on this team we could use some more forward minutes

I think just the weird thing is that Tatum is arguably the most versatile player in the league and can fit in literally any lineup and is a great defender. I think he got benched because Kerr is still looking at things by position and you see that with his lineups and Tatum seems like the least vocal guy on the team and probably the least likely to complain. He's also one of the most ball dominant players in the NBA, his value comes from what he can do basically on his own with the ball in his hands, and team USA didn't need that from their Kawai replacement, they needed someone who would make the extra passes, do the off ball movement, create some spacing and putthe effort in on defense. If they could have have had a second Jrue Holiday that would have been the first pick, Derrick White fills that same role at a super high level

What’s an important thing to remember about the Olympics is that point differential is a huge factor. These teams will play their best lineups until the final buzzer (Not saying Tatum isn’t apart of the lineup), it adds a bit more strategy to the game. If Serbia blows out the other two teams in their group, while the U.S. team struggles, it’ll be a lot closer than we realize
Point differential is only used as a tiebreaker if there is a tie between three teams. You just made that up lol.

We live in an era where EVERYTHING is blown out of proportion. Tatum will end up playing and it was nice to see KD get his minutes in from injury. There's nothing wrong with the best all-around player on the defending champions not getting minutes in the first Olympics game. It just shows how rich of a roster this Olympic team is. Everyone will get their moments to shine this Olympics.
That being said, not playing him at all does seem like something Kerr specifically might've done just to test the waters.
Tatum is going up against the absolute best the league has to offer in these USA practices. He’s not thriving in a room full of elite players. KD s The greatest player in the HISTORY of the US National Team, Melo is "just" 3-2 internationally and was part of the teams that went 3rd in olympics '04 & world cup '06, I dunno if that is really good enough to call him 2nd all time.

Steve Kerr told ESPN that Tatum's exclusion was more about match-ups than anything else. Kerr also said "he'll be back next game". No need to panic.
Here's the other weird part of the analysis. JT led Team USA to an Olympic Gold last Cycle as the number 2 or number 3 player. Heck KD said he's the next best Olympic player. This isn't about not being able to play with this talent in an international setting. It's largely because Kerr has a hardon for playing three guards and prefers to go small.
Kerr's own messaging here has been mixed to say the least. On one hand he's said "we spoke to him beforehand this would happen but ALSO I feel like an idiot for not playing him. " So which is it Steve? I do think some of this is because he felt JT wouldn't raise a stink about this. If it was Ant or Book you'd need a tent to cover how much shade we'd see from either of those two.

His shooting has been inconsistent and this team has great shooters. White/jrue/curry are great facilitators and amazing off the ball, and can shoot. AD and Embiid are our shot blockers. Then there’s Lebron and KD playing lights out. Tatum is great at a lot of things but isn’t a specialist in anything. It makes sense that other players fit better into scheme.

Kerr made the right call. Team USA in past Olympics and Fiba world cup games got beat by shifty quick guards. Holiday and White were chosen to clamp up Serbia's guards. Durant needed game reps and minutes. Durant went 8 for 9 and scored 23 pts. This equaled a 26 pt blow out.
This isnt an All Star game. This is high level Olympic play. With a point differential system. You play and score until the game ends. So once the 10 man rotation is set. You don't deviate from it. Unless there is an injury.
Next game Tatum will play because Kerr needs his size against South Sudans tall shooters and rebounders. Kerr did say he benched Tatum before the Serbia game due to matchups.
Sorry bro, do your research. Tatum has won gold in every single international tournament he’s been involved in that he’s been healthy for, including winning the last Olympic gold while being the 2nd leading scorer.
The only international play Tatum was involved in and didn’t medal was way back in 2019, when he got injured earlier in the tournament and didn’t get to play in the final couple of games that U.S. lost and failed to medal without him.

Tatum not playing (or otherwise getting more limited minutes) isn’t a surprise to me.
Team USA learned last year at the FIBA World Cup that they need to bring more bigs and legit bigs at that (so not Tatum) - and that there would be many occasions where it would be more appropriate to play two of them together.
Tatum may be versatile, and an easy to fit guy - but he is a distant third (on this roster) at his position to LeBron and Durant, would have been fourth had Kawhi stayed with the team.
On top of this you have Kerr being a small ball guy, would likely be playing three guards often.
Kerr is a genius fs. His strategy beat South Sudan by a considerable 1 point😭

IMO he has coached a single style/system, with a predominantly consistent roster build/dynamic, and ridden on the coattails of a superstar.

Tatum is a much more effective player than KD, KAWHI & Lebron. At this point, he's a better defender than all 3, he's a better playmaker than anyone on the team not named LBJ or Haliburton, & he's a better rebounder than kawhi, KD & LBJ. Not playing tatum doesn't matter in the grand scheme bcuz they should win but sheesh.
I'm just surprised that Kerr is still coaching the GSW team instead of this team. Running out 3 guard lineups when the strength of the team is wings & bigs. This makes Kerr seem one dimensional. LBJ and KD are both bigger than JT - which should be a factor playing international teams with bigger/taller 3s and 4s.
With the exception of LBJs FT%, both LBJ and KD had higher shooting % in all categories this past NBA season (FG%, 3FG%, eFG%, TS%, FT%).
LBJ is a considerably better playmaker. The one thing Durant is actually known for is the thing he is being asked to provide.
Now, is LeBrons legacy a factor - Yes.
Is Kevin Durant going for Olympic records a factor - Yes, although he still came off the bench.
Is Tatum’s age being held against him - probably.
Does Kerr’s small ball preference hurt Tatum (and likely the US) - Yes.
But fully agree team USA should play two legit bigs and arguably two Small Forwards alongside Curry - problem is they didn’t select enough bigs, or enough without injury issues/concerns - Joel being the only internationally sized centre probably needs one of those starting spots.
Also agree on Kerr, he is becoming overrated very quickly and looking very one dimensional. Disappointed that Team USA didn’t fire him early following that FIBA WC meltdown.

The reason that Steve Kerr didn't have a good response is that he had to lie. It wasn't an idiotic response it was just a lie. Jayson Tatum needs to understand that this is the Olympics and it's whatever is good for the team and he has guys playing his position that are better than him especially in FIBA. Suck it up Tatum. I do think it's funny that two guys from his team are playing more than him.

Let’s be real here. Kerr is doing a BAD job as the coach. Starting 3 guards and one of them is Booker? That was a terrible starting lineup. Embid has been horrible so far. Tatum should have started over Booker and that’s obvious.

Kerr made the right call. Team USA in past Olympics and Fiba world cup games got beat by shifty quick guards. Holiday and White were chosen to clamp up Serbia's guards. Durant needed game reps and minutes. Durant went 8 for 9 and scored 23 pts. This equaled a 26 pt blow out.
This isnt an All Star game. This is high level Olympic play. With a point differential system. You play and score until the game ends. So once the 10 man rotation is set. You don't deviate from it. Unless there is an injury.
Next game Tatum will play because Kerr needs his size against South Sudans tall shooters and rebounders. Kerr did say he benched Tatum before the Serbia game due to matchups.

3:30 Great video but completely disagree with the reasoning here. Lebron and Durant are great but Tatum's greatest strength and what makes the Celtics so potent is his versatility and ability to play 1-4 and play both sides as well as on and off ball. There's no reason to box Tatum into the SF-PF category when he could just as easily play minutes at guard, something he showed he can do extremely well during the Celtics title run.
You playing Tatum over ant or curry? I agree he’s better overall than booker though but bookers shooting makes him more valuable

Dumb analysis. If you don't get to play, you don't get to show yourself, so to say someone played better, well, we don't know. Against Serbia tonight, the US looked like the Lakers playing a play-in game to the NBA tournament by the skin of their teeth, as opposed to the Celtics dominating everyone all season and the playoffs. Sad part is the US could have put four players from one of the most dominant team in NBA history on the floor and augmented them with a few choice players, but instead it chose a generation past it's prime. Thankfully, Curry showed up finally after a poor run, but one has to ask whether Tatum would have done the same if Kerr played him.
Embiid should be out of rotation. Can French take back his passport? I think they can and they should!
