Ravenstonedale is a village and large civil parish in Cumbria, on the watershed between the River Lune and River Eden. The village lies 4 miles south west of Kirkby Stephen. The parish includes the village of Newbiggin-on-Lune and several smaller settlements including Bowderdale, Brownber, Greenside, Stennerskeugh, Wath and Weasdale. Large areas of moorland lie within the parish, extending 5 miles south west of the village to the northern side of the Howgill Fells.
Smardalegill is a small steep-sided valley connecting Smardale and the valley of the River Eden with the eastern end of the valley of the River Lune. Scandal Beck runs north-northeast through it, as does the former Stainmore Railway.
Smardale Gill quarry was a large limestone quarry on the west side of Smardale Gill. Lime was produced on site at two limekilns with raw materials brought to the top of the kilns using an inclined plane and a stationary engine. A railway siding on the Stainmore line next to the kilns allowed lime to be carried away by rail. The limekilns and evidence of the engine house and inclined plane are extant.
At the south end of the valley on the border with Ravenstonedale civil parish is the 18th-century arched stone packhorse bridge known as Smardale bridge, now a Grade II listed structure.
There is a small disused sandstone quarry at the south of the gill.
Two railway lines ran through Smardale and past the village. The Stainmore Railway passed Smardale on the northern edge of the village, where there was a small halt, Smardale railway station (now a private dwelling). Going westwards it then crossed under the Settle to Carlisle railway line just east of Scandal Beck before curving south through Smardalegill along the east bank. Within Smardalegill the line crosses the beck at a shallow angle by Smardalegill Viaduct. The Settle to Carlisle railway line passes Smardale village to the south, travelling east-west; to the west the line crosses Scandal Beck by Smardale Viaduct.
Smardale Gill Viaduct predates Smardale Viaduct, being complete in 1861. The viaduct was designed by Sir Thomas Bouch for the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway and the construction contracted to Mr Wrigg, costing £11,928 to build. The bridge, which was built of local sandstone has 14 arches, and is 90 ft high and 550 ft long. The line across it remained single tracked despite the structure being wide enough for a double line.
Smardale Viaduct was built by the contractors Benton & Woodiwiss for the Settle to Carlisle Line of the Midland Railway. The viaduct is 710 ft long and 130 ft high, the highest on the line. Over 60,000 long tons (61,000 t) of stone was used in its construction. Local limestone was used for its construction, the arch quoins were of millstone grit. Two of the twelve piers - the fourth and the tenth are of considerably heavier construction. The bridge opened in August 1875 having taken five years to construct, it crosses both Scandal Beck and the former Stainmore railway line.

Another great video which brought back memories of my C2C walk in 2011. I'll walk this route when I visit the Lakes in June & Aug when underfoot conditions might not be so muddy.

It's a lovely la'al walk mate especially in Summer with all the wild flowers and butterflies...i knew the Drone would come into its own with them viaducts especially the second one as there isn't much of a view from a afar because of the trees.
Thanks as always for watching David very much appreciated 😊

Another new walk to add to the 'to-do' list! Nice to watch with the map out! I've been to Smardale viaduct lots of times for butterflies and orchids (especially around the first viaduct) but not done that circuit before. Good to see that viaduct open again after all the work. I'm with Tracey on not liking those stone stiles! Really nice variety too, with interesting local history... and I hear you're now carrying a piano around in that rucksack this week too... and nice of that choir to meet you halfway round! 🤣 Really like the map at the end of the videos too.

Hi Andy, Tracey and The Rock Star. Brilliant video, something very different but always nice to do something a little different. Those viaducts are and were a fantastic piece of engineering. I work in construction and it would takes as long now to build structures like that as it did back then. Haha
I'm out in the fells tomorrow doing the Dodds, hoping for some half decent weather. All the best guys, Dave.,

@@RockStar67 Hi mate. Yeah there was loads of snow up there mate. It started out lovely in the morning. The afternoon was brutal. Total whiteout. Don’t think I’ve ever checked my map so much. 🤣
It was tough going mentally and physically. There will be no video of the walk on my channel though my phone died in the cold so disconnected from the watch. 🙁
Have a great day today mate. Stay safe, all the best. 😃⛰🥾❄️
