To be honest, I THINK with the case of animated, the final designs for all of the characters were done before toys started production. Not to mention, If i'm right, toys for animated didn't pop up on shelves until a ways into season 1. So, I think in the case of ANIMATED, it is more show accurate, rather then the show being accurate in the toys, though its still absurd that Wreck Gar has THAT much shell... But to be fair, that was PROBABLY intentional in the design for the character in the first place.

Animated is probably my fav toy line. It makes me wish i got more of them when they were new. But unfortunately i was only 12ish at the time. No real income to buy them with. Also, i think the "shell former" type of this toy was the only solid way to get it done. It might be the black sheep of the toy line, but if his alt mode had to be a garbage truck, then it was probably the best choice.
Wreck-Gar is one of the few animated toys I actually own and that's only because I love the character in the cartoon. I never noticed that those pistons move in all the time I've owned the figure. I also don't recall him ever using his toy weapons in the cartoon. He pulled a lot of other things out of his back pack including his G1 Vehicle mode, a stop sign, an accordion, both Decepticon and Autobot insignias, but I don't remember ever seeing those weapons. Speaking of the insignia. I kind wish that instead of the giant Autobot insignia on his door that was never in the cartoon, that he had a rotating panel on his chest where he actually wears his insignia. The panel would need to rotate like Universe Dinobot and RotF Wheelie because of course the insignia would be upside down when in vehicle mode which is the main reason he doesn't have an insignia on his chest. He did join the Decepticons very briefly in the cartoon before joining the Autobots. I kind of customized mine a bit by adding an Autobot sticker to his chest... which as I said before looks wrong in vehicle mode but considering how crazy the character is, I can totally picture him driving around with an upside down Autobot logo on his bumper. It'd probably bother me more if the character wasn't crazy. I'm kind of disappointed that Wreck-Gar never shared any screen time with Blitzwing.
+RialVestro Pretty sure Wreck Gar and Blitzwing didn't have any screen time together because the writers knew that much insanity would tear a hole in reality. Also their insanity would feed off of each other.
It kinda funny how Garbage truck is a rare sight in TF universe. But Garbage trucks pretty burely vehicles. I mean they are heavy and sizable and a compactor system in some cases (like here) they even come with lifting forks. (heck i could even see a cool bio-warefare spin, like say using the trash compartment to cultivate germs.
I honestly don't get the hate for Shellforming. I mean, if it was an entire line of Shellformers, then yeah, that would be ridiculous, but one or two Shellformers in an otherwise shell-free line- like Wreck-Gar in Animated, or Thunderblast in Cybertron- adds some variety in terms of transformations. It's interesting to see it once in a while. I do agree, though, that the "It's show-accurate!" defense is kinda absurd.
he should have been used for motormaster instead of optimus, his vehicle and robot modes are way closer to the g1 than the voyager optimus will never be
I know that, with the exception of the 86 movie toys, the toy first approach was definitely a thing up until at least Armada (maybe even into Cybertron, I'm not sure), but I thought (and correct me if I'm wrong) that things became more simultaneous with the movie and Animated.
+OptimusPhillip Things started moving at a faster pace with the movie, the development time for it required it, but the design process still means the toys have to begin production before the animation does. And yeah, the Unicron Trilogy is where you can see toy first at it's prime as even minor details from the toys were shown on the character models.
from what I've read, the head of Wreck-Gar was styled off of Canti from FLCL as some of the production staff were fans of the works of Studio GAINAX and of FLCL specifically

Shellformer he may be, that's actually quite clean and aesthetically pleasing.

This was 2008 though :/
I love the song with these transformers in ( weird al dare to be stupid )
they could make a remold of this as motormaster. in fact, they contemplated that when they made the stunticonjob package.
Billy maze here with another AMAZING product (made and said by diamond bolt)
wait the back pack acordains onto his back and he is voiced by weird al

when did he have the energy blades in the show?
A garbage truck is a way better alt mode for Wreck-Gar in my opinion.
