Pure magic, brings back a lot of happy memories and what a wealth of industrial heritage
Hi there,
Got this as a recommendation by way of the YT algorithms. And as someone based on the Fylde Coast who has a big interest in the Tramway, thank you. The big surprise or take away from this is seeing Tram Number 706, the Princess Alice, still being around. Watched that as being a feature of a Train Crazy Cab Ride DVD that I watched the other day coincidentally and thought in the intervening years between filming (2006, I think) and now (2022) had been gone for good. Thank you for showing us it is still here. All in all a brilliant video.
Regards,
Aaron.
Thanks Aaron. Yes there's lots of old trams in there. All with the hope of being restored and back in service one day. There's also 100's of Blackpool trams elsewhere on display around the country. So a lot of them have been kept alive, which is good to see. Including the ones in San Francisco too.
The reconstruction 😂😂😂 best thing I’ve watched in ages
I love trams but especially the old ones. Somehow much more enjoyable than buses. The old ones had real character. This video is so informative
An excellent collection of those older trams. They had character and were well designed, any wonder that they were so popular with holiday makers. Thank you Darren for this great video with Mr. Evans deserving credit for explanation of the items.
Great to see. Last on the trams in the 70's! Did a tour of the system on the Dreadnought. Then next day on a boat and a twin. Fleetwood to Star Gate in a Dreadnought is an experience!
Another great video bud. I think I have some 80's footage of the now-defunct Tramnik One. Happy days of our family holidays. Thanks again for another informative vid!
Thanks for this amazing video. The new trams are efficient and accessible but they just don’t compare with the history, variety and excitement of the heritage trams. When you were waiting at a tram stop in the old days you never knew what kind of tram was coming next!
Thanks Daren. Very interesting. So pleased the Council saved so many. I hope they can get a Lottery Grant to help with the building and tram maintenance.
Most were saved thanks to private owners and investors (much like the bus restoration clubs), not the council. Had it been left to the council they'd have all gone now.
Superb video mate. As a young kid from London, I first went to Blackpool in 1978 - and the trams fascinated me then, as they do even now. They remain an integral part of Blackpool's DNA. So sad that money cannot be sourced by Blackpool Borough Council to fund the roof repairs; in order to assist in keeping these historical masterpieces in good condition; particularly when you consider some of the utter tat that has been purchased along the sea front, masquerading as 'modern art'.
I worked there as a bus/tram driver in the 80's and the sad thing is it's the way it is now (along with most of the rest of the town) because of neglect and mismanagement back then. In fact the tram depot didn't look much better then than it does now, and it was a fully working depot at that time (obviously they didn't have the new trams then which have their own, separate depot). THe roof leaked even then.
Blackpool used to be a very busy place with millions of visitors every year and the tramways used to take huge sums of money, yet according to the council, who ran it of course, they were always skint. We were even the last town in the UK to run buses with the open platform at the back, which were awful to drive, again because of poor maintenance. Why other towns had new buses yet Blackpool couldn't afford any, well you'd have to ask the council. I'd love to know where the money really went.
Great to see all those old trams. Very good acting with your reconstruction. Well done David. Great video, old photos good to see. Amazing . Thank you
i have donated already it's my home town
Brilliant! Your reconstruction of Alan Bradley's death was mint. Very funny. I have always been fascinated with Blackpool's social history since going for the first time in 1974 aged just 7. I went to the Dr Who exhibition (Jon Pertwee was still the doctor) which was amazing to see an actual Dalek face to face. But what really scared me was the Louis Tussaud's waxworks chamber of horrors. Have you ever thought of looking into the history of Tussauds ? I bet they have a few old figures etc in their storeroom.
These Blackpool videos make me seriously want to visit there for at least a week.
was born there mam & had a b&b there in havlock street
Hi Darren, as others have said you were like a kid in a sweet shop 👌Now the modern electric trams are efficient and comfortable but sterile as compared to the original bone shakers esp at illumination times. As a kid loved the open topped gondola? tram. The reverse seat backs. All wonderful memories, sighhhhh. I can't imagine the St Anne's gas powered trams at all, the scalelectric type pin puller sounded complex enough. That's the propulsion method used on the San Francisco tram/trolley system. How things come back into favour, the rush to create new tram systems and even the guided bus lanes we have coming into Manchester now. Cheers DougT in Mancs
I love the Corgi models of the Blackpool trams I've got and seeing the real thing is amazing. Great video Darren.
Thanks Anthony
Nice tour Darren. It`s nice that somwhere at least has a sense of heritage and I wish them all the very best in their endeavours to keep this piece of old England alive and well.
Exactly. Well worth a visit if you get a chance.
A cracking video young man - ! Norwich had a tram system, but it only lasted 35 years due to council / team company disagreements and the eventual introduction of trolley buses and motor buses. But there are still over twenty cantenary brackets still in place for those who know what to look for - !
Thanks Simon. Glad you liked
Thanks for this video, loved seeing all the illumination trams, and looking forward to a ride on one this year, and a tour in a heritage tram, also thank you to David who has a wealth of knowledge and puts everything across very well. Thanks for this Darren, as always excellent, so happy to have found your channel.
Great video guys 😀 I remember seeing Tramnik being in the centre of Gynn Square roundabout a few years back as a static exhibit. It looked amazing and is sadly missed.
Another cracking video Darren, I do like seeing the old trams. Have you been to Crich Tramway Museum in Matlock? It's one of my favourite places to visit. Thank you for showing us around. 👌
Not yet! But I will one day.
Great video, so glad I found your site. Got loads of old photos of the trams from early 80s when I first went there as a kid. The only geek kid with a camera, haha
Memories of childhood right here in this video 👍👍
Brilliant video! You looked like a wee boy on Christmas morning driving that tram. The smile said it all 😂. To be honest I would love that too 😀
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes I was in my element
12:13 my uncle helped restore Bolton 66 he was a Wood working specialist hired by the restoration group, at the time the tram was just a hen coop. He rebuilt the upperdeck and made some new seating. There is a plaque on the inside as a dedication. He helped restore other trams as well after that, he must have been given a good review.
I did the heritage illuminations tour in September 2023 on HMS Blackpool. If anyone goes to Blackpool please go on this. Its very good value for money. The crews are helpful and knowledgeable, but more importantly all the money goes to the upkeep of these buetiful historical trams.. Not only arre they the heritage of Blackpool but of the memories of holidays gone by and the greater country.
Thank you Darren and another great video and since my childhood ive loved the old Blackpool Trams .
Brilliant tour, loved it and will definitely be going back at some point
Great video Darren,I have so many great memories as a kid late 70's early 80's in Blackpool.
Great video! Would love to see the Hovertram up and running again! It was loosely based on the pioneering SR.N2 hovercraft from the early 60s. Powered by four gas turbine engines, Saunders-Roe Nautical 2 was one of the best looking hovercraft built, and could reach speeds in excess of 70 knots! Alas she was broken up after proving the concept. Let's get this 'SR.N2' flying again!
These look amazing. I loved the doco you did on Butlin's Filey. That was amazing learning all about that incredible place and it's history. Thanks for helping to keep me sane during lock downs last year with your informative and always interesting docos :)
Thanks mate
OMG old tram tours love it bro thanks 4 sharing love your history docs
Great video as always! Just the pattern on the seat covers on the trams remind me of my childhood trips to Blackpool 😁 I remember that Corrie episode and I was only 8!
Alan Bradley trying to smother Rita and then dying by the tram was my fave storyline. I think I was about 8 when it happened haha.
Classic corrie was the best
Weren't the 80s and 90s just the best. Everything was so much more simple
What a lovely video showing such a great history. Really enjoyed watching that, thank you for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks for watching
nice surprise to see this video pop up 👍.. I'm guessing Blackpool will be doing summat for the Jubilee weekend 👍
Yes, a tram cavalcade as far as i know.
@@AdventureMe ah ok, I'll look for UA-cam videos of what was out 👍
Awesome mate
Thanks bud
@@AdventureMe welcome mate
Very interesting stuff Darren, great insight from David. I've never been on a tram.
A nice tour today, Darren. Thank you!
Excellent video, when we didn't holiday at Butlins Filey it was Blackpool or Lytham St Annes. Stayed in a family run hotel one year with Freddie and the Dreamers occupying the attic rooms, great fun.
Sounds fun lol
I do love old Blackpool trams they are amazing I remember so many of them going up and down the line when I was the kid I can't wait for more of the blackpool video
Thanks Wayne
I lived in Blackpool through the 1950's until the late 60's and remember the balloon trams with a lot of affection. I can remember as a youngster travelling to Fleetwood on a single decker, getting to thw terminaus and the conductor would swing the seat backs around in the other direction.
Great memories
Superb video Darren Ive always loved Blackpool and when ever I'm there I always take the old trams as love um
Thanks Alan
An excellent video as always mate ... Will visit next time I'm in England x
What an amazing place thanks very much for taking us there and to Dave Evans for showing you (and us!!) round.
I'm pretty sure I would have gone to Blackpool as a little boy, but don't remember it, we used to go to Crich frequently to pick up my Gran from Halifax. Also fondly remember the Seaton and Great Orme tramways. I'm sure we will have some cine film of all of these places. I used to live near Rugby road which still has its tramlines and cobbles, something to look at next time down Southsea.
Over here (Granada, southern Spain) things are going full circle. The extensive tramway lines that were taken out of service perhaps 50 years ago have started to be rebuilt to modern standards although only one line. There are even plans to rebuild the Sierra Nevada tramway, at least part of it. There is a good video worth watching of how it used to be originally filmed in cine and converted.ua-cam.com/video/EC4P6Lpup54/v-deo.html
You looked like you had a good time even though the tram run you over!!
Good luck from Spain!!
Did not know Blackpool employed a black smith have learnt something new today. Great video.
It just gets better brilliant that one mate brilliant 🤩
Stunning, thank you!
Thank you! Cheers!
A fantastic blog from start to finish!
Cheers!
Thanks Nick
You had a grin like a kid in a sweet shop when you were in the drivers cab of those trams.
Brilliant vlog Darren. Wish we still had trams in Leeds it would certainly make traveling around much easier.
Absolutely
@heinzer69 I'm very doubtful. As with anything the North is promised on any election campaign. Meanwhile London will get a new tube line.
Well, you 've been very lucky.......and that too with Angela L.
The historical insight was great,i've never seen anything like it exciting
I also wish that the chrismas trams were
Wounderful to look at here.
Was a well done Video
Thank you very much..Darren
The Standard tram was so called because it was to Blackpool's standard design, not because it looked like other trams elsewhere. The Blackpool Standard was a bogie tram. The ubiquitous Standard tram was a 4-wheel car, built by Dick,Kerr at Preston and generally referred to as a "Preston" car which, of course, would not go down well in Blackpool.
Great video tour, things have changed since I last wandered around Rigby Road.
Great video. I remember watching a tv show several years ago on the restoration of a Coronation tram. It was a team of three or four experts who had a short time frame to get the tram running again. I recall that they had the most trouble with the power system. I think the show's name was Quest or something like that. Comment from British Columbia, Canada.
Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic reenactment... Next we'll see you on TV as a new character in Corrie.
Interesting video as always. 👏👍
another great video thanks
Thanks again!
my goodness no end to your talents presenter, stutman/actor now . Enjoyed that video
We;ll recreated lol!! Happy Sunday to you. My Sundays wouldn't be the same now without a vid from you.
Thanks. I try lol
Finally catching up with some of my regular subscriptions! And more Blackpool - woohoo! That depot is so cool! I must go some day.
That Alan Bradley moment though - brilliant ha - how did you get that much kinesis from a stationary vehicle?? Watch out Spielberg hehe :D
I forwarded it to the special effects department for treatment. (the dog). He did wonders
@@AdventureMe What a pro! Ha
Absolutely superb video my friend, what a great channel 👏
Thanks Ade
Fantastic Video Darren, thank you so much for coming down to support us. It was a real pleasure to meet you. :)
Thanks Paul. And thanks for having me, I'll see you again soon I'm sure.
Highlight as a kid for me in the 1950s was a trip to the Illuminations and a tram ride. Big day out from Wakefield dad driving the Ford Prefect van over the Pennines. No motorway then.
Love your Videos
Exellent video, really hope they get the target to fix the roof and preserve these wonderful pieces of history
You and me both!
Darren, you're a stuntman? As a license mechanic I found this video "Amazing," that lathe at 7:03 is a piece of history. 13:29, "The Cheshire Cat?" Thanks to Paul and David for helping Darren with this great watch. Working there as a volunteer would be like going to heaven. Thanks again for your time and hard work.
Thanks Mike. Hollywood stuntman jobs incoming
@@AdventureMe Funny thing, we just drove past the HMS Queen Mary last night, what a sight.....
Another nice video. They have separate trams there. are very nice to see
Brilliant this one Darren, what a gem 💎
Thanks mate
I’ve now even spelt your name right buddy 🤫
@@Reck46 I didn't want to correct you lol
Great video,
Amazing,,,great video thanks
Thanks Steve
Thanks I really appreciated your latest video I like to see what Is going on with the old trams Blackpool would not be the same without them
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the trams amazing remember the rocket tram running 😊😊😊😊😊
Amazing collection. You should come here to the Isle of Man and see the wonderful old tams and trains we are lucky to have and most of them still in regular service.
I will hopefully one day
Very nostalgic. I remember riding the trams in the late 1970's to see the illuminations. There was a big display of Dr Who and the Daleks (Tom Baker) and I was terrified of it ;)
I remember those. They still have them up at Bispham
Great video I thought the Alan Bradley a touch of Phoenix Nights there LOL keep up the good work nice one.
I was channeling Brian Potter
Very interesting thank you 👍
Thanks mate
11.49 Tram 703 on the left, which was the stationary tram seen in Corrie. 703 also has a few ghost stories of its own.
Best history vids on blackpool
Great research
Thanks mate
Your special effects budget must have been huge! Great video, Darren!
Hollywood level budget here. Or maybe Bollywood
Terror Tram advertised the Coral Island Terror Train it was number 634 back in the mid nineties to late 2000s
You are correct. My bad. I just had Passage del Terror in my head and had forgotten about the Terror Train.
I shall wear sackcloth and ashes until my next tour. Lol.
As always, good to see Darren doing all his own stunts
Oh yeah. I had my own trailer and everything
just like to say thank you I enjoy this every year went to BLACKPOOL for holidays be there next year
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for great chunks of nostalgia. I'm a (ex)Mancunian & visited Blackpool often. i remember the coronations but loved the top deck of the balloons & the previous ones too.Did they copy theVW Transporter nose or was it the reverse? as a kid a lived the reversible seats. We were a family of 4 so i used to reverse one (empty of course) so that we coul sit facing one another an have a conversation, Kept me n my bruv out of mischief. Thanks again.
Thanks Roger. I actually don't know, but I see what you mean.
Hi Darren, great video, brilliant acting and lots of childhood memories here for many of us but the biggest question where have all the drawer handles gone in the old office? Thankyou for what you do..
You know I never noticed that. Maybe they were brass, and have been removed to stop someone nicking them.
An Old Sunderland Tram with the logo Shop At Binns, an icon of Sunderland heritage. Brilliant video, its inspired me to go.Thanks.
You should. Well worth a visit
Just so you know, it isn't an actual Sunderland tram, but an old Blackpool one, made to look like one as Beamish bought it to add to their operational fleet.
Sunderland had a few trams built in the 30's that were almost identical to Blackpool's, so when the old tramway closed for the upgrade in 2010, the Baloons were then mostly surplus, so they bought one, made it look like an old original Sunderland one and used it as a very useful, high capacity, all weather car for their museum line around the site at Beamish.
After a few years there, it was withdrawn and donated back to Blackpool's Tramtown attraction.
Hope this is of use to you.
Many thanks.
Gas powerd trams , in kidderminster my home town the kidderminster gas company used to have gas powered trucks with a large gas bag on top of the roof full of gas 😟 and there were electric badges here , all a very long time ago , seem that history repeats it self , great video 👍
Thanks Paul
Wonderful D
Thank you! Cheers!
when on holidays there, i was always drawn to the trams (yeah well, been a rail enthusiast that tends to happen lol), and even rode to fleetwood on them. i havent been on the new fangled modern tosh yet, but it wont ever be the same as the old noisy rumbling track shaking trams....but least they do come out to playso we can still enjoy theoldness and originaly of the seaside line
Thanks Rodney
Hi Darren. Loved the reconstruction at the beginning, I thought it was class, made me laugh. Excellent detailed, vlog going back in time and through the years. How times have changed. Will you managed to get in the New tram depot. ?
No I doubt I will do the new one. It's too flashy and modern for me.
i have donated it is my home town lots of my relative's still live there i visit when i can
interesting stuff. 👍
Thanks mate
That was great i
Balloon car tram 710 is at Fleetwood now
I put an avert on both sides of the rocket tram back in the mid 90s with my friend who owns a sign writing business in Blackpool. The ad was for Whitegates estate agents and it took us a day to complete the tram. Fantastic memories... Darren, when is the vlog coming with the old big wheel carriages as the subject ?
A few weeks away. But not long
My favourite, the big wheel.
Very intresting
This is so constructive Mr Evans. I am on the evidence now and will build on it.. Charlotte x
You are very welcome Charlotte. Hope it was of use and some interest for you.
I could have gone into more detail as to how the similarities relate, but that would have taken a lot of explanation. So as you seem.to now have the basics, I'll just offer you any further assistance if required, but if you can find it all yourself, then that is equally absolutely fine as well.
Cheers.
@@dancedecker I could do with learning more about the structure of why contact is made towards us. I feel humbled that they choose me to communicate their existence
@@charlottedevere4876 Thanks for asking about this, but if it is as I was told it is,then they don't get in touch. Not if Stone Tape is the way we see most things that we then perhaps regard as "ghosts".
They aren't really there anymore. It's a type of "tape" made under certain conditions that we don't yet understand, if it is a real.thing of course.
It just replays what was "recorded" onto the atmosphere, if certain conditions are repeated and we see the "tape". Accordingly it cannot react or relate to us, just like a video can't.
I'm.not saying that some other entities don't exist, just that the stone tape versions, if that's what most people see, cannot react to anyone now, as they are simply this recorded "trapped" image.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.
. Cheers.
I remember the trolley buses in Bolton, they went past our house, but I can't remember seeing trams there.
These would have been early 1900's
The hotel is still there and near near the Grand hotel on north shore. It bears a blue plaque to say that opposite there Alan Bradley was run over 😄
The illuminated trams made me think about, The Main Street Electrical Parade, at Walt Disney World, and Disneyland.
Yes very similar. But these have been going for decades.
“Rita!!” 😂😂
Peter Kay vibes
I remember an old tram in a shed on Prescot road Liverpool in the 1970's (Old Swan) does anyone know what happened to it?
👍
Am I correct in seeing that the overhead system is suitable for both standard pantographs and rod pantographs?
Yes I believe so
