Been in that work shop more times than you could possibly imagine, The smell is a mix of lubrication oil and molten/welded steel, as he says proper workshop.
So many memories. My late grandad used to take me on the trams after treating me to a Knickerbocker Glory in Binns. A travesty what has happened to Blackpool.
Hi Tim, just wanted to say a huge thank you for taking the time to come and visit us at Tramtown. It meant so much to us, you really are a lovely chap and it was a real honour to meet you. Keep being awesome :)
A big thanks Paul i work in the Safety and Facilities Dept at BTS along with Craig we have been involved in assisting your great cause, thank you for all your hard work and dedication to get the depot repaired, along with Bryan Lindop and the vols you guys make such a difference.
I loved this, I've never been on a tram but been to lovely Blackpool many times,my bad! I hope the lotto gives some funding,it would be tragic if Tram town suffered due to lack of funding. Keep up the great work guys🎉
Tram Town is a fantastic place to visit. Paul & his colleagues are super friendly. My wife & I were walking past the depot during the afternoon & the guys there saw I was like a kid in a sweet shop !! As a one off they invited us in for a guided tour as we were not staying in Blackpool for long & was unable to book the next scheduled one. If you are in Blackpool & want to indulge yourself in history, go & visit. Sadly walking back to the hotel along the prom, some yobbos thought it funny throwing glass bottles at us, which otherwise spoilt a perfect day !!
Absolute salt of the earth these two walking you through it. They're visibly excited to have someone interested in their craftsmanship, 10/10 video Tim!
According to 1900s reasoning, open trams actually were a Health&Safety feature - people thought the cold and fresh air would keep the drivers alert! Vienna, where I live and drive vintage trams, only started enclosing platforms after a very harsh winter in the 1930s (extended temperaturs in the -20s I think). New cars were built with enclosed platforms from around 1910 onwards but did run with the doors open until the last pre-war cars were withdrawn from service in 1978. The first cars with remote-controlled doors were introduced in 1951. This workshop is nothng short of amazing, including the staff! Apparently there's only a handful of workshops left in Europe certified to replace tram tyres on solid wheels like this and they charge a fortune. Modern trams have rubber buffers between the wheels and tyres and the tyres are just pressed on cold, which is a lot less faff than the old way. From what I've heard it costs 50 grand to have four heat-fitted tyres replaced!
Great video Tim. The modern trams may be more comfortable, but they just don't have the character of the vintage ones, always loved travelling on them, it was great to see them again.
Amen to that, I take riding the old trams over the copy and paste trains. After all they had character, class and unique style that anyone can tell them apart where there from like Glasgow tram, a Liverpool tram or London tram. the things that the new ones don't have.
Absolutely fabulous 👌. Our heritage is rapidly being scrapped. Way back when I was a kid one of the highlights was a ride on the tram. I just love our old buses and trams. My best wishes from Liverpool.
Another brilliant vlog. Seen a few done on Tramtown but yours is the most informative. This a fantastic museum and vital in relation to recording the transport history of this Country. It deserves both national and local support.
Wow, this was so interesting. Thanks very much Tim for showing it to us and raising awareness of the work going on there to preserve these lovely heritage vehicles. Angie
Having gone to school near Fleetwood, and the tram being an economical way to get into Cleveleys and Blackpool I have such fond memories of journeys to and from school. A true piece of Blackpool history and thanks for bringing awareness to this
Great video, Tim! If you ever get the chance in the summer, then you need to visit Beamish Open Air Museum, near Newcastle. It's like stepping back in time. Cheers! 😊
13:30 - 15:34 This took me flying back to around 1970. Those seats (almost as hard as the planks underneath), their 'art nouveux' covers, the light-fittings, and the stairs (as if designed to break an ankle if you mistrod while the tram was in motion). 😃 And he's completely right about the front bench being the exciting place to sit! Absolutely wonderful! Thanks so much for this vid!
I love trams! We have trams running here in Melbourne, of course. We also have a tram museum/depot in the suburb of Hawthorn. It is brilliant. Not always open, but I had a lovely time ringing as many bells as I could. Who says we have to grow up! 😉
What a fantastic place. I remember most of these trams when they were in service. No one ever thought anything of standing on the track to get on the rocket. Makes me feel old, good times though 😀
This a very informative blog I remember the illuminated trams. Every year in August my mum and lots of family members would holiday in Blackpool just to see the trams and illuminations, definitely remember the rocket tram, its a real walk back in my childhood holidays. 🙂
loved this video. i'm always looking for fresh things to do with the kids when we go and they would love this. i'm also going to share it a a Blackpool fb group i'm in. Bobs a legend lol
What a fantastic vlog this was Tim, so informative. Thanks must also go to the chaps that were talking us through the years of the trams in Blackpool. Absolutely brilliant Tim, thanks for sharing. Great job.👍🚃🚋
My funny memory of those trams in the 1970s was the times when the pantograph (the long rod that tracks the electric overhead cable) came off the cable and the driver or conductor got off to use a long bamboo pole with a hook on the end. He would reconnect the rod to the power supply and set off again. As I recall, this took about 2 minutes. The ride on those trams was quite rough, so I assume that the tracks were in poor shape in the past. You would need to hang on because a sudden bump could knock you off your seat or off your feet. As a boy, that was good fun!
Trolley poles are somewhat notorious for coming off the wire and they require quite complicated supports for the actual wire because the pickup goes partly around the wire. Other types of pickup, like pantographs, only touch the bottom of the wire, which is why many cities in Europe changed very early. Vienna phased out trolley poles before WWI and replaced them with Siemens lyra-style pickups.
Wow Tim, this just popped up too. Derek and me just watched and oh the memories flood back, remember the seats being put back when you were going forwards, so lovely to see these old trams. I lived in San Francisco for a couple of years and remember one Sunday afternoon walking down Market street and seeing a Blackpool open deck tram with The Pleasure Beach as its destination running past me. It tool me back 40 years when I use to go to Blackpool for my holidays with the family as a child. I'll see if I can find a picture I took with my camera ( film in thise days not digital) and add it here.

Tim you don't half push out some content, which is great for someone like me who does not own or watch TV, who loves nothing more than exploring pretty little English towns and villages! I will tell you a secret now Tim, but keep this between us, but, my favourite English village is Dunster in Somerset! Visited many times now, last time was in 2017 for a few days staying in the village itself in a lovely B&B, right by the old yarn market building, with views of the castle and the sea over at Blue Anchor Bay, the yarn market itself is the perfect place of an evening for some people watching while drinking a nice Black Russian, though the village life is obviously so much quieter than in a town, the village is asleep by 10pm, so for a night owl like me, I found it odd. But what a stunning place Tim, honestly, it is quentissentially English, such a pretty place with a very relaxed vibe. Just, don't tell anyone or they will all head there 😀
Thanks for the tip! hey I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! every now and then I will do a video slightly different which this is so thanks for watching
@@WalkWithMeTim hello Tim we will visit this lovely place when the lighter nights are here because it’s a six hour round trip we park at the south shore and walk walk walk and maybe stay overnight

Fantastic video. Wish I could visit but I'm far from the UK. I'm originally from Coventry where we also used to have trams. The Coventry tram system was bombed out of existence in 1940 during the blitz.
@@WalkWithMeTim the sun did come out after all today Tim. Hope you and Gaby are having a wonderful day . I know it has been busy for you both today. Take care Tim☀️
I am really enjoying your videos, thank you for sharing. This one is absolutely brilliant!! Your enthusiasm meant that you asked all the questions I would have done!!
23:52 my uncle helped restore Bolton 66 he was a Wood working specialist hired by the restoration group, at the time the tram was just a hen coop. He rebuilt the upperdeck and made some new seating. There is a plaque on the inside as a dedication. He helped restore other trams as well after that, he must have been given a good review.
Didn't spitting have something to do with the transmission of tuberculosis? I can certainly remember it on buses as a child - although, it was quite often 'altered' so that it referred to a quite different bodily function!! This is a brilliant attraction - worth a trip to Blackpool at some point, I'm sure! Thanks for the preview - I'd not have known about it otherwise!
I remember seeing that tram train at Blackpool and 8years when the last time I went to Blackpool I went on the old London tram at Blackpool I love it sooo much
Tramnik 1 is the tram I most associate with Blackpool. I remember as a kid always keeping an eye out for it when we went to see the illuminations. That was in the early '90s.
Thank you so much Tim, a very informative, enjoyable and for many of us a quite evocative trip down memory lane, the sights, sounds and smells of the trams still linger in our most treasured memories. The restoration work being carried out by the tram teams is amazing, and looks even better in a 4k rewatch. Have you thought about visiting canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/national-waterways-museum at Elsmere port someday
Great video and great memories. I was lucky enough to get a ride on the rocket tram as a kid in the late 70s. In my memory you sat on a slope but I wasn’t sure if I’d imagined that bit, pleased to see that my memory was correct 😃
WOW Tim. Great to watch your review Along with My Friend Paul Galley I talked him into moving to Blackpool from Stoke and It's incredible what he has achieved for Blackpool as Party Leader of Blackpool Council.
Lol inremember riding onnthe rocket tram in 1989 lol it was great i asked my mum.... Mum if im riding on this tram does it take you to visit mr spoon from button moon i was only 9yr old at the time being onna huge tram as a kid feels like a wow factor i was a model adict as a kid lol and loved anything with lights lol the last time i visited blackpool was 4 years ago on a day trip il have to go back for sure i travel about alot and try to visit as many places as i can irs about building memories and enjoying sigh seeing and when your old yiu can look back on what you did and know youve achived something good out of life 👍😁
Id love to work there, at 36 ive followed electric motor development over the years and you can see it in the generations of trams, theres an original battery tram from that area that was cutting edge in the late 1800's
Wonderfull video. I stayed in Cleveleys for a bit in the winter of 84/85. Loved the trams and often caught one down to visit Tower Models in Blackpool. (Are they still there) After four months in Europe I came back to find double decker and illuminated trams along with 100,000 tourists. None of which were there in winter. The difference between winter Blackpool and summer Blackpool is crazy.
If I had to list your top 5 videos this would be one of them. From positive interaction with the care home residents you are aware I work with to my partner who as I’ve said in her younger days spent annual holidays in the Blackpool area. Thank you very enjoyable
@@WalkWithMeTim Thank you I have booked one on the Saturday on Easter weekend.I think the 710 tram which was use in coronation Street which killed Alan Bradley is stored at Fleetwood unless it has been moved.I saw a video of it being moved 8 years ago on UA-cam.ua-cam.com/video/XlRu-YpJyKI/v-deo.html

Your enthusiasm meant that you asked all the questions I would have done!!
wow that's kind thanks Jill
23:52 my uncle helped restore Bolton 66 he was a Wood working specialist hired by the restoration group, at the time the tram was just a hen coop. He rebuilt the upperdeck and made some new seating. There is a plaque on the inside as a dedication. He helped restore other trams as well after that, he must have been given a good review.
Great Vid Tim really interesting seeing all those old trams
Thanks Ross
Didn't spitting have something to do with the transmission of tuberculosis? I can certainly remember it on buses as a child - although, it was quite often 'altered' so that it referred to a quite different bodily function!! This is a brilliant attraction - worth a trip to Blackpool at some point, I'm sure! Thanks for the preview - I'd not have known about it otherwise!
You're welcome Paul.. yes I think you are correct
Has the crowdfunding target been met?
Hi Tim what an interesting video it was good to watch thank you for showing us it certainly was different
Glad you enjoyed it Sally
I remember seeing that tram train at Blackpool and 8years when the last time I went to Blackpool I went on the old London tram at Blackpool I love it sooo much
Tramnik 1 is the tram I most associate with Blackpool. I remember as a kid always keeping an eye out for it when we went to see the illuminations. That was in the early '90s.
nice
Like a blast from the past. Remember when I was a kid the no spitting signs on all buses.
wow that must be going back Dave lol
@@WalkWithMeTim Only slightly, some odd 60 years back.
@@davethornley1955 lol
Can't wait too see this!❤❤
😊
Hi Tim fantastic video every time I visited Blackpool I was always fascinated by the trams though I have not been to Blackpool since 2009
Wow .. yes I'm a fan too, thanks for watching Stephen
Thanks Belvedere , ill see how this video does first ;-)
Great video and great memories. I was lucky enough to get a ride on the rocket tram as a kid in the late 70s. In my memory you sat on a slope but I wasn’t sure if I’d imagined that bit, pleased to see that my memory was correct 😃
The open top double decker tram (number 706) was the first ever Blackpool tram that I ever travelled on in 1977.
WOW Tim. Great to watch your review Along with My Friend Paul Galley I talked him into moving to Blackpool from Stoke and It's incredible what he has achieved for Blackpool as Party Leader of Blackpool Council.
What a great tour, Tim! These vintage double decked trams, or similar, they still have running in Hong Kong. Have never seen a boat tram before!
You should see them lit up
Great video,i enjoyed my depot tour in January 2022,bought some nice tram merchandise
Very nice!
Loved this one Tim x
thanks Laura
I may be misguided but I have kind of high hopes for the tramway going forward. Great to see Rigby Road still in use... Also these guys are great.
Thanks for watching
Maybe you could visit the transport museum in Suffolk x 🙂

Id love to work there, at 36 ive followed electric motor development over the years and you can see it in the generations of trams, theres an original battery tram from that area that was cutting edge in the late 1800's
If you are near see if you can get involved
South wales, pipe dream.
Yes agree
Fascinating thanks Tim 👍
you are welcome thanks for clicking it Mark
If I had to list your top 5 videos this would be one of them. From positive interaction with the care home residents you are aware I work with to my partner who as I’ve said in her younger days spent annual holidays in the Blackpool area. Thank you very enjoyable
Wow, thank you!
I remember the sea life tram from when I was a kid. Back in 2005 😢
I really enjoyed your video yesterday I am looking to book a tour at Easter weekend this weekend.
hope you have fun!
In London it was the Metropolitan Police who would not allow windscreens to interfere with the driver's view. They relented only in the late 1930s.
wow
Great video, I took over 2000 photos of the trams from 1978 to 1991....
Oh wow!
I went on the rocket when I was a child
I think over the years went on all the illuminated trams
Great childhood memories
Can see a single deck Leyland Atlantean which would of been a double decker one at some point and 2 other Atlanteans too! Ace video ❤❤
Brilliant video 👍thanks
Thanks
