Yes, it stays. I did find timelines I created months ago when timelines was first released got a bit buggy, but that might have been because timelines were new then? They should remain and are visible to anyone with view access to the spreadsheet
That was a great and easy to follow video. The timeline feature is still basic but hopefully Google will continue to improve.

Could it be exported as a pdf or an image?
Not currently. Timelines can be downloaded (click File and then select Download) as .xlsx, .ods, .html, .csv, .tsv file

not all accounts have it (@gmail.com accounts don't have it, for example)
