  • In this one I finish off a couple more sheds and explain what a mule ewe is. One of the most common breeds in the UK.
    Archie shows us how to do the undermine after people asked me to do a video on it.
    Hope you enjoy.
    Thanks.

    ABOUT ME
    I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland. That’s why I have such a strong accent!! I was born and raised in sheep with my dad being a shepherd on an Ayrshire farm.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep.
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then, in 2015, my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could keep my hand in. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 ewes.
    I shear over 10,000 sheep a season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September.
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep scanner and have been building up my run since then so I have a good income stream in summer and winter.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    Hello Cammy I’m watching you from Germany. My husband is shepherd since ever and I love your: “good morning sheep fans!” As farmers, also with cows, sheep and farmland, we are not always able to go on holiday. But we visited Scotland in 2019 and we loved it and hope to come back soon. The experience was unbelievable and unforgettable for us. Please continue with your channel to encourage people to do this indispensable job. Thank you for sharing your daily work with everyone ❣️

    Showing my age here - in my day we used Border Leicester tups on our Blackie ewes to produce Greyface lambs - the ewes of that cross still made a decent enough ewe to put to a Suffolk. The Border Leicester crosses had more wool on them when born so were said to be hardier. Now it has all changed to the Blue tups.

    I loved this video! The play by play commentary and the “documentary advertisement” in the middle was a scream LOL! Oh, in the Sates, a “mule” is a ALWAYS cross between a Horse mother, and a Donkey father. If using a horse father and a donkey mother, it’s called a “Hinny” (not many of those around). Great content, Cammy!

    Great jobby! Great day from Sheep Shape Shire, where Leicester Longwool’s are all Sheep Shape! The difference with the Leicester is its a bit harder at my age to wrangle a 150kg ram. When I ran my farm, I raised a Red Poled /Herford cross cows. The Red poles here is used as combo meat and milk cow. I crossed them with my prize Herford bull. My female calves made great mothers with lots of milk, so our calves finished 15% to 20% heavier than pure bred calves of either breed. The cattle were easy to work with too. Not wild.

    Thanks so much for explaining the terms for the different breeds of sheep. It really helps me follow your videos. The dog that ran up and turned the sheep around--that one should get a great dinner. That was brilliant! Please give that dog a huge hug from me. I edit because I remembered a question for you. How do you decide when to sell the baby lambs, and do you sell them to become mothers themselves, or for food? What goes to the butchers and what continues to reproduce? How do you decide that?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Donna, there are various factors for deciding what goes for breeding and what goes for food production. The mule lamb is produced specifically for breeding females so all the female lambs will be sold to go on and breed. The boys will be sold for meat. There are generally breeds that are produced for meat only by putting a ram over a mule ewe (texels, beltex, suffolk). It’s hard to explain on comments but i’ll try cover it in future videos. 👍

      @@TheSheepGame A job for all the neighbours to help - it was the only way to gather up a squad of workers. They were paid back in kind , by going to each farm in turn. Meant that all the local news got caught up on ! Some clippers used " tables" to shear the sheep on - a low set wooden table on stout wooden legs , that was narrower at one end than the other. The clipper straddled the narrow end , with the sheep on its back , with its head towards the clipper. I seem to remember folk climbing inside the wool bags ( which were strung up) so that they could pack the wool tight , with their feet. The shears had to be sharpened almost continually with a hone stone and some oil.

    We breed something similar here in west of Ireland, horned ewe to blue leicester/texel ram, sell all the ewe lambs. Of the pure blue leicester we were getting very curly wool ewe lambs which ye dont seem to have? I dunno if theres a slight difference in breeding over there?

    • @TheSheepGame

      I use quantums for everything really. Have a few warriors and Calibres but try to stick with quantum’s.

    • @sarinhighwind
      @sarinhighwind 3 роки тому

      @@TheSheepGame Crap, i gotta go look those up.
      Quantums are 4's i think. Warriors are 4s as well.
      Ahh, you running all short bevels.
      I run 6.5 bevel ace's when I do blackies.
      You might be better off with some pro legends on them.
      Maybe some B-Evils. I forgot which hieney combs I had last. They sent me some to test. I run Ace mainly.
      Yeah, Ninja and B-Evils. I really liked both combs, the Ninja gonna be about a 6 bevel, the b-evil is a 5 bevel.
      Those ones there look a bit open on the fleeces, but that little extra bevel might help you not have to push as hard and get through the fleece quicker.
      I rarely get to shear with short bevels. I actually only have 1 short bevel comb, i need to order a few more 4.5's.

  • @mertlemable5863

    How much is a fleece worth? And how much does the average shearer charge per sheep?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 роки тому

      So the fleeces in this video would be worth around £0.20 (20 pence). It costs between £1.35 - £1.50 per sheep to have them shorn so there is a big loss to the farmer but it has to be done for animal welfare reasons.
