ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

You might want to look at Milton Chiropractic on youtube for exercises to relieve you back pain. eg Pallof Press, etc. Nice to hear a few words from your customers and James is always entertaining.

It would be really neat to see you and Right Choice Shearing do a collab. Maybe they could go to Scotland, and you two could teach each other your techniques and tricks of the trade. You being "properly" taught and them being self taught, it would be interesting to see how your techniques differ, are the same, and which one has the best trick/tip.

When you drove up to the second farm I was in awe of the white buildings. Being an American we don’t have very old history like that and I’d love to see the old structure’s there in Scotland.

The song name is The Wellerman. It's a sea shanty that has become popular in recent months. I don't know who sang the version that Cammy used but you should be able to find quite a few different versions here on youtube.

Looking back on growing up with sheep, it amazes me how the sheep react to the handling! Our sheep were wild, only rarely handled for shearing, problems, ect. But I remember that they were so similar when a good Shearer got them. You could tell when it would be a bad cut the first hand on the sheep. While accidents happened, my Dad would turf out anyone who didn’t have “the touch” like is being exhibited here! I think a sheep knows when it in safe hand!
I enjoy watching sheep shearing. It is a big deal here; The Museum of Appalachia has an event called Sheep Shearing Days and you have to purchase tickets in advance to go see it.

I’m always watching and thinking..’that would be fun to learn’…but it seems my 18 year old brain hasn’t adequately consulted my 60 year old body before starting such projects. I got one of my 140 Kilo sheep into the right position but then my body informed my brain of some good sense….the boy was off the hook for shearing THAT day! Now I use the brain and work the genetic soup for breeding. In this economy perfect breeding rams are far more valuable than any other lamb at auction and our breed is particularly rare..(about 1000 total breeding sheep in the breed globally). But sheep are where the greatest things in life are! I wouldn’t grow old doing any other job!

Taller shearers will have it slightly worse but the best shearer in the world is 6’ 5” so i’ve no excuse 😁

Bit of stretching before you start, during and after shearing might help. Had to do it myself when I was at the block laying. Hard on the back. Helps a bit.
