I need a LOT more of all of this. I have watched this video over and over and over again, completely hypnotized by the animations. I've never seen this style in this sort of more serious tone and it's incredible. Every single contour of every single stroke in all of the animation, I can't seem to stop studying it over and over again. Hair, fangs, eyes, expression, thick lines, thin lines, how they morph and transition. Why is there not more of this incredible work to see?! And I don't mean this vid, I mean the creators. I crave the styles so much. I suspect this style - if these guys/you guys are the animators of some of my most beloved movies - is part of what influenced me as an artist today. My style, the LIFE in it, everything. Please make more content.
+Reigne Wolvenshire I should also comment that the music is amazing. Both visual and audio goes together so well- this is practically a unicorn of a piece. Fabled beauty so rare it's unbelievable. Such is my admiration and love.
+Reigne Wolvenshire Thank you for your enthusiastic comments. Unfortunately, not ONE single TV channel in the whole world has ever programmed this video. It took a full year of effort and passion for my team and me to make it, and I am proud as hell of it. But also ruined. No more animation content from me in a while. You can read my comic books, though. Best, J
I'll look you up! I was thinking how much work has gone into every single frame of this, aye. You'll recover from the burn out eventually! I look forward to your content. :)
What truly makes my jaw drop every time I see this is the not only the sheer passion and understanding of animation going into this, but the knowledge that this is also directed by the incredibly talented artist for the Blacksad series. The fact that Juanjo's art is so consistently high-quality is a goal that most artists dream of reaching :)

you know, i really like this video. not even just because of the beautiful animation. at first with just the audio, one might think "oh haha, crazy kids and their attempts at attention. this is about them.". but then you get to the video. the vintage clips of sideshows and fairgrounds (which is really cool as someone who loves amusement park history) suggest that the desire to do crazy bullshit is an eternal human condition. it is a tale as old as time. and thats dope as hell to me for some reason. were just a bunch of hyper advanced monkeys tryna keep busy in our cosmically short time. fuckin love it.
You can go forward or backwards frame by frame using , and . (aka the "" buttons) also download Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and you can set buttons to do the same thing for when you're viewing downloaded/offline videos :D
The phrasing between the end of the verses and the line "like me" gives off this cool double meaning. Become and amputee like me. (Become an amputee. Like me.) then asking "Won't you, like me?". In addition to asking them to "like me" in a video rating sense, it's also inviting them to do dumb things to achieve the same kind of superficial popularity. Who's leading the way like me? Comes off like a dare; like you should do it too. It's fucking clever lyricism.
and most people just think its a badass metal song with amazing Disney-like graphics. yet here we have one of the last remaining intellectuals who understands that not everything is as it seems. bravo good madam. in all seriousness i thought i was the only one who got the double meaning. reading your comment has somewhat restored some faith that humans might go back to a path of intelligence. there's a slim chance, but a slim one is always better than none.
This animation is why the Disney 2D animation department needs to come back...or a different department filled with these amazing animators needs to be created... Either way, please bring back 2D animation. I appreciate 3D, and know that there are a lot of things you can do with it, but 3D just doesn't have the same...impact, as 2D...
I totally agree and honestly I really miss 2d animation. It's really the main reason why I even considered clicking on this video. Don't get me wrong a lot of the 3d animations today are good but you have to follow a certain set of guidelines as the program can easily bug out with 2d this doesn't happen. Seriously, you can go from a super realistic style one second then you can change it to look like a 5 year old was animating.
in terms of the song "thumbs up" in terms of art style, 90's Disney because back then their artists has skill and didn't make their characters with a child's head on an adult body. plus the pencil look with the line work really brings it all out. great job
@@xthrax ...which means they went through the process of animating it in 3D before they drew a single frame. So yeah, I bet it still took a while. Using the 3D like that improved the final quality, but I doubt it saved them much time.

Sad this video isn't more popular than it currently is though :(. Also can we agree that breakdown and solo are fucking great?
Mattias is a genius. If he was from US, he would be huge because his music hits all the age and genres categories. So much humor in it as well. But he is from Sweden and that's it. Not that I care. I dig everything and anything that's good. But the American music market is so self-centered as no other.
@@RavenReach I get it, believe me. I am originally from Europe. This music is more or less dead in US when it comes to wide popularity. Bands are happy to fill up small clubs anymore. I think the quantizing along with other things like lack of anything new that would look like a instantly recognizable brand caused the decline. Look at Vai, for example. The man ran out of ideas roughly 15 years ago. Anything new he does is not really new, it's just rehash of his older stuff he got stuck in. Also, if you listen to early Haken (first 2 albums), they are really exciting and fun. Everything after that is just so much perfection and quantizing and so ridiculously complex that it loses rock's or metal's original catch - the simple idea, riff or lick that rocked the stadiums. Even Ekhlund is really difficult to listen to. I can never get through any of his albums from beginning to the end. Rock or metal reached its limits and just like all the other modern music, it's just rehashing itself. It's not reinventing itself and I don't think it will be able to. There won't be another Blackfoot or Deep Purple or Van Halen. The raw energy, the fun, those fantastic riffs. It's just not there. It moved from big stadiums to small clubs for a reason. And it's not because of low IQ of listeners. The only band that truly got me fired again after listening to so much lame stuff lately is "Lost In Thought". Fantastic band, fantastic music. But are they big? Not a chance. The interest is simply not there anymore. And that's a big fan of rock and progmetal talking here. I enjoy what's left and that's all I can do
This is still not only one of my favorite songs, but one of my favorite music videos/pieces of artwork of all time!!! This was one of the very first things that made me really go "THAT, I want to make things like THAT for a living!" Nine years later, and here I am on my way to a design degree.... I'm no musician, and I'm certainly no master of animation, but this video inspired me to go after something meaningful to me, and I think the band and team deserve all the thanks for that :-) You guys are awesome!!!
I came for the animation, and came back for the music and animation. Am I the only one who thinks the song is a badass commentary on how people will hurt themselves for public attention? I love the way it sounds, fun, epic, just all in all amazing :D .
Hhhhnnggggnnnn! Juanjo Guarnido is SO GOOD, and this is an excellent song. Such a good use of CG and hand-drawn animation together (not just in compositing, but the use of CG in the planning for the hand-drawn master is subtle and very well done). It's beautiful, fluid, relevant, and visually rich. Really, well done!
***** I'm pretty sure it's drawn over keyframed 3D animation. Not most of it, and not the effects (those I'm pretty sure are just hand drawn frame-by-frame, but the big camera moves are too good and the slow motion is too consistent to be only hand drawn.
***** I don't know where my other reply to you went. Must have gotten lost, but I didn't think the characters were 3d other than using 3d stand-ins for the big camera shots, and I don't think pretty much any of this is mocap. The keys are too good, so I'm inclined to think that it's mostly video-referenced keyframe animation. Also, if you play the video at 0.25x speed and watch the characters at 0:48, you'll see they switch between ones, twos, and threes depending on how fast they're moving -- something that almost never happens in rotoscope (go look at monster house to see how bad mocap/rotoscope can be). I'm about 90% sure 0:52 isn't rotoscope for the reasons above. The instruments and environment are in 3d and all the shots were planned in 3d from what I can tell. Anyway, I finally found some pencil tests, and I'm pretty sure I'm right ca-tsuka.tumblr.com/post/103903797558/freak-kitchen-freak-of-the-week-linetests-music
Holy fucking shit man, I logged in just so I could like this. The whole thing start to finish is fucking gorgeous and stunning and you can absolutely see all the hard work that went into it. Shame that it hasn't gotten the recognition it truly deserves. Things like this reinforce my love and absolute preference for 2D animation, so much more alive and with more fluidity than its fully 3D counterpart. That animation like this hardly exists anymore is fucking criminal honestly. This is so completely captivating and it makes me sad that it hasn't reached a bigger audience. You and your team did a wonderful job.
I just remembered this video existed and I had to watch it again. It goes so hard and is so beautifully done, I wish more people knew about it. The song lives rent free in my head too, such a cool fusion of visuals and song
10000th time watching this but I just love how the lyrics reference the modern "people will do anything for likes" culture, but the music video shows a bunch of black and white footage of older dangerous stunts to show that this behavior isn't entirely new among people. Not exactly a comforting thought, but an important detail not to be forgotten.
I'm pretty sure Don Bluth is the reason why Disney corporation has added in statute of limitations for their animators once they leave their company. If I remember right, it is around "10 years" before they're allowed to work in the industry by any other company. In my opinion it is a bullshit limitation, although I may be outdated on my sources, they may have lessened things... anyways, the only person who I know was able to snub them has been Robin Williams and his role as Genie.
Yeah, Disney's done lots of great stuff and the entertainment industry as a whole wouldn't be where it is today without them, but they definitely have their darker side; a great example of this that also affects the whole industry is the changes to copyright law they've lobbied to prevent Mickey Mouse (and by extension everything else) to fall into the public domain. This means that in a few years' time virtually nothing "new" will enter public domain (because the law affects everything else, not just Disney's stuff), but it's also rather hypocritical considering that their fame and fortune as a company was built in large part due to them using public domain works to make their own stuff. This will likely have bad consequences for creative works as a whole that will only get worse as time goes by.

Also: I really really liked the song (I was afraid I might not like it), but... hey! that was pretty rad! The *only* "down" side to this whole video were the film scenes... even though they were really interesting... it made me "go out" from the video... I need a version with pure 2D GLORY... **Sends love to all the people who gave support on Kickstarter** x3
I keep rewatching this, and noticing more subtle animations that really bring this to life, it's so well done, like when the singer goes to help the other guy up, the little flinch of his head like he's about to hit him for more "likes", it just makes them feel so much more 'alive', wish there was more animation this fluid and smooth in the world
Everyone commenting about the video, can we just take into consideration about the quality of the production on the audio, it's easily the best mixed and mastered song I've probably heard can hear every idosyncrasy from each instrument and Ia's vocals sound super crisp
I always seemingly come back to this video every year and I’m never disappointed, I’m 19 turning 20 in June of next year, started my first semester of college and my dream is to be a professional digital artist / animator and this gives me so much inspiration and motivation to continue doing what i love most, my dream is to be as good as the animators who made this amazing project.

+Reigne Wolvenshire
Thank you for your enthusiastic comments. Unfortunately, not ONE single TV channel in the whole world has ever programmed this video. It took a full year of effort and passion for my team and me to make it, and I am proud as hell of it. But also ruined. No more animation content from me in a while. You can read my comic books, though.
Best,
J
I'll look you up! I was thinking how much work has gone into every single frame of this, aye. You'll recover from the burn out eventually! I look forward to your content. :)
+Reigne Wolvenshire The animation kinda looks Don Bluth-esque.
+Juanjo Guarnido Why don't you try patreon or gofund me to make cool stuff like this?
What truly makes my jaw drop every time I see this is the not only the sheer passion and understanding of animation going into this, but the knowledge that this is also directed by the incredibly talented artist for the Blacksad series. The fact that Juanjo's art is so consistently high-quality is a goal that most artists dream of reaching :)
It's a crime how under appreciated this is, this is a masterpiece in animation

THIS is what MTV should be playing. Kick-ass, incredibly creative music videos.
Landy does mtv still do music videos? I just know current mtv for jersey shore and “New Years resolutions for white people”.
@@LandyRShambles MTV was presented to this video by the band's manager and declined to air it. No television channel in the world has ever wanted to play it.
That's really upsetting. It's such a fantastic animation

Arkane has such incredible art, glad to see the origins of the legends. The paintbrush-Dishonored artstylle is such a visual treat 👍
you know, i really like this video. not even just because of the beautiful animation. at first with just the audio, one might think "oh haha, crazy kids and their attempts at attention. this is about them.". but then you get to the video. the vintage clips of sideshows and fairgrounds (which is really cool as someone who loves amusement park history) suggest that the desire to do crazy bullshit is an eternal human condition. it is a tale as old as time. and thats dope as hell to me for some reason. were just a bunch of hyper advanced monkeys tryna keep busy in our cosmically short time. fuckin love it.
Humanities greatest enemies are boredom and fear. Caution has taken the place of fear.

Not only is the animation top-shelf, the song itself is a banger.

Lisent to their new song "Morons"
Dante Nightstrider is this a joke
This animation is why the Disney 2D animation department needs to come back...or a different department filled with these amazing animators needs to be created... Either way, please bring back 2D animation.
I appreciate 3D, and know that there are a lot of things you can do with it, but 3D just doesn't have the same...impact, as 2D...
Studio Ghibli?
Metalicorn Love Studio Ghibli, and I know their animation is 2d (and it's beautiful), but I'm talking about the western 2d.

Man... This must've taken forever to animate.
actually they used 3d animation to speed up the process and drew over the 3d rendered frames
@@xthrax ...which means they went through the process of animating it in 3D before they drew a single frame. So yeah, I bet it still took a while. Using the 3D like that improved the final quality, but I doubt it saved them much time.
@@TheBoundFenrir I guess it really is determined by what would've taken longer to do and how many people would they have to hire by comparison

You doubt it saved them time because you have no idea of how hard is 2d drawing by itself.
@@GuitarWholesale That may be so, but I *do* know how long it takes to animate things in 3d. ESPECIALLY if you're starting from scratch and have to make all the models and such.
It's a crime how unseen this is. I've watched this multiple times during it's years and it is gorgeous ;_;
I just can't stop watching this video. Not only does it make me remember fond times watching great animated movies in my youth, but I went and found more music by these guys and I'm in love. Sad this video isn't more popular than it currently is though :(.

The breakdown was AMAZING
This was one of the very first things that made me really go "THAT, I want to make things like THAT for a living!"
Nine years later, and here I am on my way to a design degree.... I'm no musician, and I'm certainly no master of animation, but this video inspired me to go after something meaningful to me, and I think the band and team deserve all the thanks for that :-) You guys are awesome!!!

Words can't give enough praise to the animation! The music is nice too, but the animation... wow!
It's like if Don Bluth and Walt Disney made a movie about rock and roll... Wicked.

There are movies with multi million dollar budgets that wish their animation was even close to this good.
