I just got home with a Dulcimer I got on craigslist - found your video - made a noter real quick in the shop from some aged walnut - and learned this song from you!!!! I am so excited right now to have a instrument I can play. Thank you!!!

Thank you Mandy and Folkcraft, I've seen songs played with a noter, but I think this is the first time I ever had anyone explain some of the little intricacies. I enjoy your teaching and your positive input. Thanks again

Is there a book/list of songs that I can play just with a noter? Sometimes arthritis in my fingers makes it difficult to chord. Thank you for providing these great lessons. They are so encouraging and helpful for beginner players.

A possible other good effect with a noter made of hardwood is not leaving finger oils on the string

True! But probably an insignificant benefit. The big benefit is the unique sound quality we get with a noter, the metallic sliding sound between notes. I often switch back and forth between using my thumbnail and the tips of my fingers, just to vary the tone during a song. Richard

So is this in the key of Em? Great lesson. Thanks for posting.

Actually, tuning the memory string down to "C" puts us in D minor. If you wanted E Minor, you could capo at fret one, or tune the bass and middle strings up one pitch, so you had (bass string to melody string) E B D. ( D raised to E, A raised to B, and melody string D left alone). Richard

I think doing noter drone with just your fingers would be painful. (Unless you have calloused work-hardened hands). That is why people use the noter, Instead of universally using their fingers...

True. But a lot of contemporary players will mix not noter/drone with chord melody, and with no noter to hold, can go back and forth easily.

Does it matter where you strum & do you need to always need to hold down a freet?
