This actually is the comparison that keeps running in my head. So yes, I might have expected this comparison and this video covered it on point. Glad I'm not the only one who wants this type of comparison between the GR IIIx and ZV1
Your videos are always so helpful and I can feel your passion and skils. You really put much effort by every video and that is so heartwarming. Thank you so much for the videos.
Another great video Matti ...One of the more important reasons I sometimes use a small fixed lens camera is the leaf shutter.... affording a fast flash sync for bright outdoor portraits etc.. Fuji x70...x100... Gr...panasonic LX. etc. Cheers
You forgot a detail about the zv-1... although it was implicit when you said the guts are RX100V, it was worth mentioning the sensor is stacked (as fast read speed as Sony A9), so you can shoot silent without rolling shutter. I like doing street photography in silent mode, and my A7IV sensor is too slow for that.
Thanks for this video, I will be getting a ZV-1 in one or two days, and hope I’ll enjoy it. It’s just about half the price of the GRIII and even less compared to the GRIIIx. BTW: great photographs of these 356s! I really love them.
Hi Matti! Hope all is well, that was a good video. I think the zv1 is a great begginer camera. Altough in my personal taste I would choose the Ricoh because I seldom rarely do video. All the best and have a great weekend.
Thanks for another functional review that we can use. Years ago I tried the RX100iii but it didn’t work out, which would sadly be my response to the ZV-1. My Street go-to has been the GR3x for mostly monochrome (stills and short video) and my iPhone for color video. For compact carry cameras, I see an increasing gap for enthusiasts, one that could be filled by an upgraded LUMIX LX100ii, or another ultra compact APS-C sensor camera from Leica or Panasonic. Or just maybe, for photographers, a compact Foveon camera from Sigma?
Oh, and yes I know that Leica is out of the APS-C market and Panasonic is focused on M43 or FF.. But if Ricoh isn’t showing both of those companies the market desire for small, portable APS-C cameras with awesome small lenses, then they will miss the boat on enthusiast cameras that function like camera phones, but act like proper ‘Cameras’ and produce better images. I may be dreaming!
Awesome and well thought out video my friend. Totally agree with everything you said. If I may add, I was shocked how good the high ISO photos turned out of my RX100 VA after de-noising them using DXO. So yeah 6400 and beyond are possible if one is willing to shoot raw. Also as you said it’s not behind the micro 4/3 by far. In fact I’m disappointed Panasonic hasn’t released a new LX100. Now the Ricoh GR III is a beast for photography. Love it! Please Ricoh don’t change the design and don’t add a view finder 🤞🏻
@@mattisulanto absolutely. Def the big boys like APS-C and FF would still perform better natively at high ISO, but if I happen to have one camera in hand that’s a 1” sensor, I wouldn’t worry as I would have before the AI era.
It takes much longer to turn on and off the ZV-1 compared to the GR cameras, can be a bit of a problem if want to pull out your camera and start shooting within 0.5 second on the street.
Amazing clear review, the video I'm looking for. My problem is for a starter, snap/quick street photography, maybe some portrait, should I add 2.5 times the money from ZV-1 to GR III X? (base on my country). The answer after watching is no, I can use ZV-1 should be enough. Is that correct? .... And still better than iPhone?
Thanks. If you really can buy the ZV-1 so cheap, go for it. Just out of curiosity, where do you live? I have never seen such a big difference in the price of those two cameras. The ZV-1 is usually around $700-800 and the GR3x around $900-1000.
@@mattisulanto And based on your other info, if ZV-1's shooting is like RX100 V, that means it's not better than iPhone13. And shouldn't waste more money.
I does not have to be sticking out on the side, it can be flush with the body at the back too. But of course it has to be on, because it's the only way to see your composition.
I absolutely love that difference take on the comparison... That's fascinating... And i think most people who are looking at those 2 cameras would want to know.. I'm just getting back into photography. I'm 60 years old and I would mainly use a camera 90% of the time shooting photos.. I've narrowed my 3 choices down to the Ricoh gr3x 40mm lens and the leica D'lux 7 and would be open to a best used leica in the ($500-1,200) range.. I'm really confused with getting a easy holding camera that mainly used for photos as a hobby and want to stay under that ($1,200) area.. Any thoughts.... Thank you in advance for any wisdom... Blessings Greg
Well done ! I am wishing for a still photography Camera with a prime Lens (or mount) in "full frame" (24x36mm sensor) in style with the first version Contax T and the Minox ML 35, I hope Cameras like those will come soon in the future. The Sony ZV-1 are a cheap (but very good) Camera compared to it´s family cameras in RX-100 series, a very good buy. Thank you for your review.
Great comparisson Matti. I'm just curious, can you do hyperfocal distance shooting using the ZV-1? For example, manually focusing on a certain distance, and shoot photos based on that focus setting. And if you turn off the camera, the focal length, aperture and the focusing distance can be save in memory, so that once you turn on, there's a way to use the settings again. Just a work around similar to the GR's snap focus feature.
Thanks. No, the Sony doesn't have hyperfocal or snap focus distance. When you power the camera off it will remember everything but the focusing distance and focal length.
I currently own an x100v for edc and Sony a7iv for jobs . I’ve owned a griii previously and it was frustrating as hell to use . But I miss having a pocket camera . Pocket camera is such a niche market . Loosing my mind once again looking for one .
It's amazing how much technology you have had to learn to make these videos. I-phone to capture sound and knowing all the best features for two different cameras that few have reviewed at all. I don't know if this is true but taking pictures of great cars must also help increase UA-cam likes! I am in the market for a smaller camera and when I think about the best camera on the small size, I keep coming back to the Panasonic GX9 although your videos of the GR3 keeps that camera in doubt as the GR3 might be the better camera for photos on the run. Thanks Matti.
Lack of 4K is no big thing, even on a high-end Lumix built for the job. A lot of pro movie is shot at 1080, edited and upscaled, because it is easier and faster that way. If you are posting on FB or YT, they will compress the snot out of 4K, limit the download speed, and most viewers will watch on a mobile phone. And e.g. I am not watching on the UHD monitor but the HD one. And if I shuffle the video across (done), it is still in the usual box not full screen. (yeah it looks good). Do the YT demographics show the formats downloaded, can't remember ... I've taken to shooting video on the G9 and GH4 (and others) at 1080p because I'm not trying to fill a cinema screen and any bigger is a waste of effort. There is a place for glorious C4K but let's face it talking head vlog is a face in a box in a window.

@@mattisulanto I agree … but cuz I’ve seen so many bash a camera for not doing what it wasn’t made for … it was made for street photography or vlogging or creators or whatever ? Does it do that? Matti, I respect your judgement very much. If you could get the ZV1 at the same price as a RX100V, which would you choose for image quality?
The image quality is essentially the same, so either one does the job equally well.
