Hey Luke, i have been in the Dutch Army and i want to add some info about those side packs. We use them as a patrol pack by zipping them together, that is also why they both have straps. Keep up the good videos, i love al those different kind of military surplus gear vids.
Hi there Luke! I am actually from The Netherlands so I have seen these packs quite a lot. This is indeed a medium size. There is a small pack that's 40 liters. This pack is called "lowe Alpine Strike" and is 60 liters (the zippered packs on the side are 10 liters each and are meant to be zipped together as a day pack) I have it's bigger brother called "Lowe Alpine Sting" which is 80 liters And then there's the biggest version which is called "Lowe Alpine Saracen" and that pack is 120 liters. The camouflage pattern is called "DPM" it stands for disruptive Pattern Material It's the Dutch version which is only very slightly different from the Brittish. I love your channel Luke! Keep up the good work! If you'd like to see the sting pack I'd be happy to send you pictures and info!
great job for giving Luke the info on Lowe alpine's range of packs. I think Luke will enjoy researching this style of military packs. I have owned sold all three and really liked them. However, I have settled on the Berghaus Vulcan for my large pack and continue to search for the elusive perfect mid sized patrol pack.
+Timo Sandberg that's awesome man! Well it depends on what color you have. If it's the camo "DPM" then you have a current issue dutch military backpack for the regular infantry (I have the same one). I had a friend in the Dutch Airborne and he was issued the Saracen "120 liters" backpack. What a lot of military personel like to do as well is they get the berghaus brand backpacks. I have to say that I love this pack. It's done great service for me. But It is a very simplistic pack. I think it needs a little updating. Have a good one bud!
+Jordy Tinus Thanks for the info! I have the DPM version, never had a pack so comfortable even with heavy loads. Is the official size 80 liters? There's a lot of different specs around the internet from 70 (50+20) to 90 liters :) Only negative thing I have about it is the huge side pockets, your stuff just gets lost in them. But without the pockets it's still roomy enough for shorter trips. And it's a bit heavy as well (as military gear always is).. But it's bomb proof, you really can't break it unless you intentionally want to.
+Timo Sandberg mine is a little bit older now and the colors are fading pretty bad. I think it's bomb proof as well. I love the aluminum frame beams in the back. What really bothered me is that the velcro that closes the buckle and pad on the lower back was getting loose and was messing up my shirts and jackets. So I went ahead and bough a nice FILBE pack
I bought one of these, when they appeared on a Surplus Site, very happy with it, all the space for a Winter multi day hike and stealthy for Wild Camping.
Sorry to correct you, but this pack is actually a small backpack. It's called the Lowe Alpine/Arwy Strike grab bag 60 liters capacity including the 2 daypacks. The medium sized pack are called Sting (single compartment) and Stingray (split main compartment) and hold 80 liters in total. And last but not least there's a large one called Saracen and holds 120 liters or 40 kgs! Just google them and you''ll like the bigger brothers even better. Keep up the good work! Sunny greets from Holland
Hiya realise it's a while ago you commented sorry 😕 Just ordered a surplus Lowe Alpine Sting and can't wait. It has the side packs too. Very pleased to be supporting the Dutch, as always good people and pretty good at football 😊
Thanks for explaining that, I didn't know there were so many, I just thought there were 3, the 45l patrol pack (smaller than this), the Sting and the Stingray, but I thought the Stingray was 120 litres. I have the Sting and it's excellent, a bit heavy with the frame but it's built to distribute weight onto the hips nicely so I don't mind that.
@@leeprice674 The Sting is a cracking bergen you won't be disappointed. Dutch kit is top, very robust. I have a Dutch poncho, steel mess tins, canteen and steel cup, and use them a lot.
@@Luka_H Do you mean the one in this video, or the whole range of Dutch DPM backpacks including Sting (the one I have), Stingray and Saracen? My Sting is pretty robust as far as I can see. Plus it's amazing for comfort etc compared to what I was issued in the British Army late 80s/early 90s, the 58 pattern large pack which is more like something from the First World War. Still I guess they will all get renewed so that they match the new camo used in the KL/KKM.
Great review Luke. One small addition: the buckle is designed like that so that it can very quickly be taken off under fire. No fumbling and it's very easy to operate with gloves on.
Hi Luke, awesome P/review, I have this pack, I really love packs that have that feature, that you can remove pouches and wear them as a separate pack, Wow, I had No idea you could zip those 2 pouches together, what i always did is remove the strap from the second pouch and put it on the one pouch and wear it as a backpack, i cant believe i hadn't thought of zipping them together, freaking awesome!, i will do that today :) Thanks Luke! -Jake
Hi! Nice review. I'm from the Netherlands ('Dutch") and I was in the army. We normaly use the 60 liter backpack. We call the two side bags 'daypacks' and it holds everything you need for the day, like a stofe, towels, dry socks, thermoscan, mess set etc. In the backpack we stuff our sleepingbag and bivybag. Also a dry uniform, poncho, etc. search on youtube for 'Rugzak 60 liter landmacht' for a video from some guys who made a cool video about it.
Yes, as below Luke - great pack. These were influenced by British Bergens by companies like Bergaus (Vulcan, Crusader etc). The side pouches can zip together to make one day pack, or as you said, you can take one off one and add it to the other. The clips and buckle were invented by Bergaus, injection moulded in the 70s. These dutch clips are especially good quality and the dpm pattern is similar to Brit DPM.
Arter 30 yrs of a Alice fan ( hunting camping) I by chance came across the Dutch,Bergman .am glad my curiosity really kicked orders one for 84.00 US $ .I was so impressed I ended up getting along and short back British Bergman. hi Luke, the British bergen (i have 2) has the side pouches that come also and they come with a proper yoke to use them as a day pac, snugpac also do one very similar, I beleive the larger dutch one is also very similar.
Very nice pack. Dutch military surplus is top-quality. Yes, the side-poclets seems to be similar to the Berghaus MMPS pockets, that you can get for instance for the Centurio 45 and comes included with some of their larger "bergens" , and zip together and carry as a small day-pack when you want to go light.
Sweet pack. Similar to the British Bergen. I'll have to check that one out. I really like the detachable side pouches that can form a smaller pack. Thanks Luke. atb Opal
Luke its similar to the British army bergan, Ref the side pockets mainly in Norway I use to put a sleeping bag in one a tarp&bivi bag in the middle & a Coleman cooker food and warm clothing in the other and snow shoes straped on the out side. job done happy days, ps hope your all keeping well :-)
You should pick up the British Army 120ltr bergen. it has detachable pockets like this one and you can put them together to form a small rucksack. it even came with a yoke and the British army 3ltr camelbak can replace the pockets as they are held by zips and buckles. Good bit of kit
Both the buckle for the waist belt and side pockets look very similar to some Berghaus product, the Centurio backpack models come to mind there. Not sure which one was "inspired" by the other or if they developed them independently. The Berghaus MMPS pouches (which usually are sold independently, since they fit both the Centurio and Crusader backpacks) also come with a little sternum strap.
Yo Luke check out the Karrimore SF 45. That pack uses the same pocket system with a yolk for carrying em on their own. I'd say its the best quality of its kind of that design.
It's the Lowe Alpine strike 40 litres......Lowe alpine make a lot of the Dutch army's packs but their brand name isn't always on the packs as they are sometimes made under licence elsewhere . Lowe Alpine make great, well built & designed backpacks, both military & civilian, & this particular bag is no exception. Very popular with the bushcraft community across the pond because of it's versatility, medium capacity & of course the quality/ price ratio. So this version didn't come with a padded back, and belt? There is one of a similar size that has that, and I thought the one I purchased did, but this seems to be different.
Hey nice pack, I wanted to ask you if you could do a review on the B99 Explorer tactical bag because I've been trying to make my bug out bag just that I can't decide on which bag to choose from eitherthe Maxpedition falcon 2 ,the Vanquest trident 20 or the B99 explorer tactical bag.
It looks like a budget friendly version of the snug pack rocket backpack. The side bags on that also come off to form another pack or single bags. Thanks for sharing. I miss the weekly surplus review. God bless and stay safe.
The two packs zip together to form a rocket pack( day pack or to carry ammo ect if you stash your bergan in RV point,ie during attack ) same as 1990 s British army bergan. You did make me laugh when you wore it like a man bag .
I honestly think the money is better spent on a berghaus vulcan, the bag that squadies buy out of their own money to replace issue bergans and the successor to the once military issue berghaus cyclops series of bag... These military items have tried to clone the earlier cyclops and recent vulcans as much as possible over the years but they just don't compete. They are not as comfortable or well thought out (the vulcan has webbing only where it is actually useful for instance, and the cyclops 2/3 back system is amongst the very best out there).. But price, you might be thinking 'they are in a different category.. Well, actually no. The dutch and british bergans go for around £50 in the UK, depending on quality and where you buy, but always well used. You'll pick up a near new, barely used vulcan for a little extra, seen em for £70-£80 on forums, much cheaper with more wear. Brand new? This is the great bit, they are nearly always in the sale. I bought a brand new one for under £100 (sub half price at the time) while waiting for a half decent issue bergan to show up, best bag i have ever owned. But hey, an extra £20-£30 for a better bag, for some, just wont be an option and i understand. So why not pay half the price of a dutch/british bergan in this video and get an older berghaus 'cyclops 2' (for instance the NI /SAS issue for around £20). It makes no sense to me to buy a used clone, if you can only afford used your still getting the better bag and better buy by getting the original berghaus', in fact in the case of the older cyclops your typically paying more money for less bag with the military clones.
grimdeathlord Sure thing brother, I will do a video on them for you. They are a Fjallraven Zipoff....can't remember the model off the top of my head. I'll get a video done for you. - Luke
The design of this pack is ok. But the version you show here is the cheap Chinese copy by Arwy, which is also used by the Dutch army, for budgetary reasons. It falls apart when you look at it too fiercly. Especially the drama are weak. Get the original by Lowe Alpine.
Hi if you like this pack you should have a look at the British Military, Northern Ireland patrol pack, www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_28?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=northern+ireland+patrol+pack&sprefix=northern+ireland+patrol+pack%2Caps%2C181 this is the original version of the Dutch pack you are reviewing

Hey Luke , I own one of the other backpacks used in the Dutch army that is similar to this one , ..it's the BergHaus Crusader 90+20. It's a monster of a bag but it's very very comfy and has some additional features that make it better than this one . Out of all of the packs I own, I use the Crusader the most .(it's easily adjustable to use with lesser/lighter loads so even if it's not in "monster mode" it's a great bag to have The Crusader is an awesome pack, and for the price (between 140 and 170 Euro depending on your size)..it's pretty hard to beat If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend you check it out . (P.s. if you are interested but can''t find one in the U.S .....I can help you out , just let me know )

But hey, an extra £20-£30 for a better bag, for some, just wont be an option and i understand. So why not pay half the price of a dutch/british bergan in this video and get an older berghaus 'cyclops 2' (for instance the NI /SAS issue for around £20).
It makes no sense to me to buy a used clone, if you can only afford used your still getting the better bag and better buy by getting the original berghaus', in fact in the case of the older cyclops your typically paying more money for less bag with the military clones.
nice review

grimdeathlord Sure thing brother, I will do a video on them for you.

The design of this pack is ok. But the version you show here is the cheap Chinese copy by Arwy, which is also used by the Dutch army, for budgetary reasons. It falls apart when you look at it too fiercly. Especially the drama are weak. Get the original by Lowe Alpine.
Umm. The side pouches only have 1 strap each because you're supposed to zip the 2 pouches together to make a single, 2 compartment day pack..
you should watch the entire video before being a smartass
I did. It was worth repeating. You aren't.
those sidepockets are supposed to be zipped together and used as "daypack"
Hi if you like this pack you should have a look at the British Military, Northern Ireland patrol pack, www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_28?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=northern+ireland+patrol+pack&sprefix=northern+ireland+patrol+pack%2Caps%2C181 this is the original version of the Dutch pack you are reviewing
Im actualy a dutch army reserve and this is a rip off the real ones have two buckles on the front and there are a few more difreneses
I ordered one of these from "Swiss Link military surplus" and sent it back because it was a faded out dry rotted piece of shit that had the wrong side pouches on it. Buyer beware of that company!

This belongs in the bag
Hey Luke , I own one of the other backpacks used in the Dutch army that is similar to this one , ..it's the BergHaus Crusader 90+20.
It's a monster of a bag but it's very very comfy and has some additional features that make it better than this one .
Out of all of the packs I own, I use the Crusader the most .(it's easily adjustable to use with lesser/lighter loads so even if it's not in "monster mode" it's a great bag to have
The Crusader is an awesome pack, and for the price (between 140 and 170 Euro depending on your size)..it's pretty hard to beat
If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend you check it out .
(P.s. if you are interested but can''t find one in the U.S .....I can help you out , just let me know )
just a heads up, from a surplus lover Dutch army gear Is kinda the king
Yo Luke check out the Karrimore SF 45. That pack uses the same pocket system with a yolk for carrying em on their own. I'd say its the best quality of its kind of that design.
