Dickey Betts was a legend... In my opinion a great guitarist, musician or band has a sound unique unto them. Dickey had that in spades. Plus he was just a badass outlaw kind of guy they don't make anymore. RIP
Dickey Betts is without question one of my biggest influences, my first band was an Allman Brother cover band. So to see this lesson and tribute on your Wide Sky is amazing and bittersweet. Great lesson as always!
I grew up and attended High School in Atlanta in 69-73, when Alman Bros. would jam & practice at Piedmont Park. Those were the days. Easy living, excellent music. Thanks, Brian. You really nailed it!
I grew up in JAx and was studying for my Bar Mitzvah in the synagogue (now converted to condos) across the street from the house where the band first got together. A few years later, my garage band was mostly AB stuff.
Excellent video. You really capture the Dickey Betts sound, thank you for compiling this info. The timing you mention at 10:30 isn’t really “playing ahead of the beat”, but rather a “3 on 2” pattern, that gives it that feel. That is: Dickey is playing a perfectly-timed 2 notes for every 3 beats.
A sad 60 year purcussionist, just found out Dickey passed, I guess I am not with it anymore. Seen Dickey 14 shows, 2 were private. Got to get to know each other. Out of all my rock guitar giants. Dickies melodic riffs touched my heart, one of my bands SILAS GREEN, Was one of my favorite families We played southern rock and blues Joey, ( chewy) played Betts to the T, when I do copy I believe it should be EXACTLY THE WAY THEY PLAYED IT. ON your music that's where you're style shines. My friend RIP the LORD has a stage on a grassy hill just for DICKEY BETTS, 55+ Years always an Allman Brothers band follower.
Absolute best guitar instructor on YT. If you like this way of instruction and dig this style of guitar, check out his website. I subscribed a few weeks ago and already have improved by leaps and bounds. I was so hoping Brian would do a Dicket Betts style lesson. RIP Mr. Betts. Thank you for this!
Just wanted to add... Btw folks, I've started using VLC's record feature to break these lessons into small blocks ( I download them first as mpgs. )...saves searching for the same spots over and over, plus his method of teaching is perfectly suited to this. I end up with a folder of around 8 chunks that make up the whole lesson. Just a quirk of mine, but I find it much easier in the end, and can easily go back over spots i need to work on. Also the fact that Brian starts over from the beginning many times during a lesson is a huge help keeping it all in context. Many web teachers don't do this nearly enough. As usual Brian, a big thanks.
Brilliant lesson. You are tempting us with that plug BrIan.. subtle but effective, jamming to the harmony guitar line does sound like fun! :D In this lesson I cast off my TAB scepticism too..
Always was a favorite sound of mine. The double leads the one that comes to mind a favorite is, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Excellent choice... for this Friday. Looking forward to practicing. In memory...
Excellent lesson, so sad to hear of Dickey's passing. He was a Guitarist that felt like a family member... My big brother, hard to believe sems like the Filmore was yesterday.
Dickey Betts is the best and you explain everything so well and I don't play guitar but if I did, you would be the one I would follow. Any interest in Martin Barre and his style?
I’m hearing. Some blue sky . Please. Brian check out Dickey Betts Song. From his Great southern days . The song is. Bougainvillea ! What a guitar lead .
This is beyond good, love this style, will learn it. Thank you. And another question I am a smaller man, I seek a small guitar like you have there which is it? It sounds amazing.
I was really hoping you would do this. You never let us down Brian. Thank you. RIP Mr Betts

Great lesson. The timing change just makes everything go better. These riffs make me happy. Reckon I will use them the rest of my short life.
Nice idea in remembering one of the greats!
My favorite UA-cam guitar teacher.

I would love to see more videos on timing, especially 16th note strumming. Thanks Brian, really enjoy your teaching style

Sounds lovely!
This was really fun to play, I'm now off to listen to some Allman Bros
Excellent lesson
First time on this channel. Great instruction! What in the heck is that guitar? It looks awesome… hollow… p90. Who makes it?
More like this, please!
Thanks Brian.
Wow, thanks so much! I just discovered your incredible channel. What brand is that guitar? It's gorgeous!
Very nice!
Love these thanks
May I know what guitar are you playing in this video?
How do you set amp up ?
This helped me click some things together that my private teacher has helped me with!
Thanks Bryan
My favorite kinda stuff
What setting do you use to get that Allman Brothers sound.
Same setting I use every week more or less - amp with a little over drive and reverb. Emulated amp for recording purposes via a Line 6 Helix
Thanks, great lesson!
This is beyond good, love this style, will learn it. Thank you. And another question I am a smaller man, I seek a small guitar like you have there which is it? It sounds amazing.
that's a Wide Sky guitar
@@activemelody Thank you Brian!
Thanks!
I would guess it is Dickies take on the B.B. King box on the high strings.
Hi Brian, what tones/effects did you use to get the Allman brothers sound. It sounds like two guitars playing at once. Brilliant lesson, by the way.😁🎸
Is there any reason why you often refer to one of the scale tones as an "interval" instead of just calling it a tone?
Just curious 🤔
do you have a lesson on the hexitonic scale?
This one ☝️
New to your channel, what is that amazing looking and sounding guitar?
Found it. Of course it’s $5k lol
What kind of guitar is that you are playing?
Very nice lesson.. BTW what kind of guitar is that??
Wide Sky - P-125
That was good advice not to use the 7 but use use the 6 instead because it sounds great.
in the lead your guitar sounds doubled!???
Are you using a pedal to get that effect??
no - it's the harmony part (2nd guitar) - explained in the video
Top drawer stuff
Aren’t you using some kind of harmonic doubler effect or something?
It’s a second harmony guitar track in the recording- explained in the video
Guitar Brand/Model ? Please 🌻
Wide Sky P125
5:30
Playing a bit ahead of the beat like Betts does is the equivalent of skipping down the side walk verses walking.. LOL
Yes, good analogy!
Actually more Jessica guitar solo.
I don't like that habitual slide down. Professional players never do it.
i have no idea what you're talking about.
🤍
