- There's nothing quite like harvesting from your personal pumpkin patch!!!
The pumpkin garden began a slow start to the season, but over time it picked up the pace and now the verdict is in. It has always been a dream of mine to grow a pumpkin patch, and I am happy to have had the opportunity to finally make it happen. Although it is far from perfect, the patch has been a great learning experience for me and in the end I was able to harvest some great pumpkins, Charlie Brown!

This is amazing Lucas! You grew sooo many good-looking pumpkins! Looks like a lot of work to move all those pumpkins to line them up at the end.
In Australia the major pumpkin we grow is the Queensland Blue which we roast, boil, mash as a major vegetable. It is picked when the stem dies off.
I also hope to be frolicking around all 9 of my plants to celebrate a first successful pumpkin harvest this Fall lol. Can’t wait! 🎃

Wowza! Amazing harvest! It'd be awesome if you could sell them. Wouldn't be hard for a better price (any money you make would be a bonus), or I suppose you could donate them, if there's a church or group you'd be comfortable supporting. You had a great year with this project!

What a great harvest of pumpkins! And what a lot of work to put them together like you did to put on the channel. The pics were amazing. What did you end up doing with them all? I love growing pumpkins more than anything else, I think. This year (2022) we got nipped by an early frost last Wed. here in Poland so many of my plants died - at least parts of them did. I did harvest quite a few, but hopefully they will just continue to ripen close by the house. They aren't nearly as gorgeous as yours though!
Thanks Becky! Your words are too kind :) I ended up keeping a bunch for Halloween and selling the rest at a local produce auction. That's too bad about the frost, but there's always next season!

Do you ever direct sow?go you water constantly?
We just sent up the patch w all wood chips. We will be planting into mounds of compost in the spring. I'm in Chicago zone 5b.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I was curious about your method of using the black plastic as opposed to using herbicides. We are looking to start our pumpkin farm this year and are debating herbicides verse plastic. Also was curious about how you actually planted the seeds. Did you simply do by punching holes in the plastic and planting by hand or did you use a mechanical planter of some sort. Thanks again!
Thanks for your comment! I highly recommend using plastic. I had to use pesticides once for cucumber beetles but I try to keep things as toxin-free as possible. No herbicides were used. It is a pain to install and remove if you do it manually like I did, so rent/buy a machine or don't bother. I sowed the seeds in cell trays and transplanted the plugs by hand after cutting holes in the plastic mulch using a knife. My method was extremely labour-intensive so can't stress enough to get the right tools/equipment. Well done! I have a question. How did you keep from mowing over the vines in the walking paths?? Do you move the vines while you're mowing? I keep having issues with this....and if i don't mow, well the weeds just TAKE OVER! HELP!! ha ha
I guess most of these plants were short/medium vine rather than long vine varieties, so they didn't creep onto the walkways much. There were a few casualties though haha. I think farmers use herbicides to keep the weeds down. But then again, I've been to pumpkin patches that are full of weeds.
so you got 182 regular pumpkins, 36 pie, & 80 white ones for a total of about 300 on 1/8 acre in 11 rows! with no irrigation. I bet you could of gotten double that if you had irrigation. Pretty impressive. I want to do this at a 1/4 acre at my kids elementary school. how much labor per week should I expect? I was thinking of laying down landscape woven plastic fabric so there woudl not be any weeds. Not sure if that's a good idea since the vines self root though. Maybe lay it donw for the first month and then remove it so the vines have a good head start.
If you aren't using herbicide I would say weed barrier is a must. I wouldn't remove it until after harvest time. Once things are planted and the vines start to take off, not much labour is required.
Maybe I missed it, but what variety are the white? Such a fun size and beautifully white!

well done I have a question please..how did you do the watering for all thos pumpkins ? did you have a drip irrigation system underneath the plastic ?

I have a couple of pumpkin plants in a field that I cannot water very often was wondering how you manged to be this successful with your crops. I guess summer in canada is not that bad. How many plants per row to get the 20 plus big orange pumpkins?
he said he had 30 of the white pumpkin plants in a row, so I assume he planted them all about 30 per row so that means rows 1 through 9 each only had 1 pumpkin per plant! I would of guessed more. so maybe I am wrong.
but why do made long difference between plants? Beautiful farm though,your answer is very important to me.
I realize that I could have spaced the rows closer together, but this was my first time growing pumpkins on a larger scale. Good to know for the future!

Nope! But I did have some issues with cucumber beetles.
You could donate some pumpkins to a zoo. Many animals will eat pumpkins including elephants and tortoises.
Donate to school in need. Some kids have never seen a real pumpkin before.
Dude...ugh...WHY didn't you teach us viewers anything about how you grew them??!!!! You mentioned you tried 3 previous times and were all pretty much failures, but this piece of land you rented and grew them in..you were finally successful. Super. But who really cares if we don't know who you are?? You need to TEACH the viewer, what specifically did you do that got you such good looking pumpkins?? I came on here to learn...so let me help you possibly help me.
-Did you start from seed? Plant spacing at start?
-What soil did you use? Did you dig a whole and backfill with just field dirt? WHAT DID YOU DO/USE..AND HOW?
-Did you control the plant growth with trimming? Add nutrients? If so .. when and what type and how much?
-Did you rototill the soil before planting? Amend of some time used?
-How did you water them, and how often?
-Obviously you used black plastic sheeting. Roots like that kind of heat?

Hahaha! A future video, I think. The truth is, I didn't do much. There was no magic here, besides the fact that we got decent rain last season. Cruddy farm soil was used, just tilled to a depth of about 6". Hardy, hybrid seed was sown in cells and transplanted to the field in early June. Check out my other half acre videos to get an idea of the process. Ultimately just planted and watched 'em grow :)
