9:41 Growing on a Trellis
We kick things off by checking out some in-ground plants. As you can see right off the bat, some varieties like the sprawl. Vining varieties can take up a lot of space, but you never want to overlook the center of your plant. This plant is on drip irrigation, and there is a plastic landscape edging piece to help retain moisture.
The pumpkin male and female flowers both grow on the vines. You want to recognize your flower types. Female flowers have a fruit growing behind them, and males tend to be longer and have stamen. The pollination process should happen naturally, but you can always do it manually if you are struggling with your fruits not maturing. This applies to all squash plants too!
Even though this is a large plant, you could grow it in a container or raised bed. The roots need space, but the vines can spill out and stretch since they don't take root.
Like many summer crops (especially other types of squash), pumpkins are prone to mildew. To help keep that at bay, you NEVER want to overhead water your plants. Wet leaves will foster powdery or Downy mildew and eventually harm the plant.
Just a few feet over, we have another pumpkin plant. It's much more compact and has several fruits close to the main stalk. This bush variety looks a lot different than the vining kind. It can still take up a fair amount of space, but it definitely has a smaller footprint.
If you want to keep powdery mildew at bay, do what they have done! Once a week, they have been taking preventative measures like spraying with a milk & water solution as well as pruning off old or sickly leaves. Here in San Diego, it's just a matter of time, though. Pruning helps the mildew from spreading, and you should want to throw those leaves away in the trash (NOT in your compost bin).
On the vining plants, you can also prune them at the end of the vine in a similar way you might top peppers or tomatoes. That will stop the plant's growth and send energy back into the fruits. That's how you can end up at the local county fair with a big ol' pumpkin in tow.
As a recap:
-Grow in full sun
-Start in the spring or summer
-Provide adequate water
But what if you don't have the space to let a vine go all over? Well, you can trellis pumpkin plants! Here's a cattle panel arched over, and that allows you to take advantage of vertical space. This can take a little bit of work, though, since you need to train the plant to stay on the trellis and go in the right direction. After the female flower gets pollinated, keep an eye on the fruit as it develops. The last thing you want is a deformed pumpkin caught up in the trellis and getting stuck.
However you decide to grow your pumpkins, be sure to get them in the ground at the right time and give them the love they need!

I love pumpkins. They were the first plant that showed me I could garden. (Notorious black thumb) I opened a pumpkin to process and it was sprouting, so I planted them and they grew! Gave me the confidence to build a garden this year, so pumpkins have a special place in my heart. Thank you for all the new information!
Out of all the pumpkin videos that exist on the internet this is the only creator that thought to talk about actual pumpkin vine and plant care. Thank you so much.
Appreciate your feedback!
I'm donating pumpkins this year in memory of my son 💙

I always make homemade pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving and this year my number one garden goal is to grow my own pie pumpkins! Thanks for this video
Hi, I planted my first pumpkins, and this information was very helpful
I’m a new first time pumpkin seed grower or try to grow will see. 😜
I’m growing Jack Be Little pumpkins up a trellis and it’s going great but those pumpkins are basically the size of a beefsteak tomato so weight isn’t an issue lol
I’m also growing birdhouse gourds up a trellis… I may need to come up with some kind of sling for those.
Awesome!! I started pumpkins for the first time this year and still don’t know what to expect. Fingers crossed!
Now you know.
Love them pants!! Can't hide in a pumpkin patch with those on! :) Great info! I am so excited that I found a local company with organic seeds! No more buying them from up north!
This is great timing. I have been thinking about planting pumpkins and starting that in my garden. Was gonna get on that this coming week.
Good!
I like how she says "punkins" like they are baby punks
Thanks you for the great tips on growing pumpkins. Last year we grew some pumpkins but it did go kind of crazy in a small part of my garden. This year I think I will do better. At least to manage them better.
hi, thanks for your enthusiastic video. I never have planted pumpkins, but would like to try them out in my new veggie garden.

Yes, they're so fun for kids!

Thanks for the info… we are planning on planting our first pumpkin patch this year
Yippee
We had volunteer pumpkins grow the last two years from my kids using there Halloween pumpkins as target practice with their Bebe gun and pellet gun. We love them they are the tiny kind
Pumpkins are one of our favorite things to grow!
I grow Connecticut Field pumpkins every year to give away to the neighborhood kids for carving. They are very productive and uniform and make perfect Jack O Lanterns. I also usually try to grow at least one large pumpkin variety (usually Big Max) but this year I am trying a variety called Atlantic Giant which supposedly can produce pumpkins up to 150 lbs. My biggest pumpkin so far is 52 lbs. and my goal is to break 70 lbs. this year. Lots of good tips in this video, especially about manual pollination. Thanks for the great content!
WOW Those are are big ones!
I grew sugar pie pumpkins last year and so much fun trying new recipes. Can't wait to harvest more this year!
What was your favorite recipe?
Your UA-cam channel is awesome!
Appreciate it!
Cant wait
I live in Miramar Florida love pumpkin anyway is made. Your garden is beautiful and thank you for your advise.
Am growing butternutsquash upward n is doing great i learned from watching youtube, thanks to u all for the idea
3 rd season trying pumpkins hope your suggestions work thank you
Very informative video. I am glad that you emphasized not to water on the leaves to prevent powdery mildew infection. For sure that is the reason for getting powdery mildew on my pumpkin leaves because in my village we used to grow pumpkin, pole beans, cucumber, ridge gourd, snake gourd and never had powdery mildew because they were grown on top of a horizontal (flat) trellis 6 ft above ground, and watering was done around the stem on the ground, which is very well stressed in your video here. Thank you very much for good video content. Thanks for your time and sharing it. I liked your video.
Absolutely the BEST video on growing 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃'S!
Really???? 😍😍😍😍
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany Yes!!!!!! You cover everything in 1 video, show the actual size of the vine for someone needing to know obviously for potential placement, watering, pollination, poor pollination, vine care, etc.mildew treatment, etc.
Just thinking of starting pumpkin seeds!
Excellent video and pumpkin tutorial. I have never grown pumpkins because I thought I didn’t have the room. But the sturdy trellis is a great idea. Thank you.
The cattle panel just has two t posts (one on each side in the middle) with a few zip ties to hold everything in place
Great video! A follow-up to this comment…How many pumpkins were planted on that one trellis? I’m going to be growing on it horizontally on a 8’x4’ cattle panel and not doing an arch. Would it be best to plant one on either end and have them meet in the middle? Thank you!!
I am starting my pumpkins earlier this year! Last year I planted what I thought were pumpkins but ended up being luffa!! At least I got something out of it... I love your videos and appreciate the local socal tips and tricks!
Ha! Luffa are great but not ideal for carving :P
Great video..... What variety of pumpkin is the bush shaped one? I have a couple spots that these would fit nicely.....
Love pumpkins and squash
I need some more pumpkin seeds
Good advice on growing pumpkins. If you do another video on pumpkin you might explain to newbies how to tell the male flower from the female. The pumpkin plants looked nice and healthy For lots of pie.
