Planting Pumpkins in the Field by My House! | Gardening with Wyse Guide

- I recently planted a whole swath of pumpkins in the field beside my house. You might ask: why do I plant so many pumpkins? I love to decorate with them in the fall and I love to grow varieties that you can't find easily. Plus, I grow a decent amount of squash that I eat all throughout the fall and winter.

We planted our veg garden directly into mushroom compost last year and our pumpkins went crazy. They grew everywhere, on top of our stone walls and behind stone walls. I especially love the ones on top of the walls. So Halloweeny. Nothing like mushroom compost. We had a hot drought that summer and I barely had to water or weed. We got some mushrooms but that’s good.
Best quote ever! It is a privilege to grow our food. Love that!
Ever since watching your kitchen cabinet refinishing video in 2020 as my wife and I prepared to do ours, (which turned out fantastic) I’ve watched most everything you post. I love your charisma, humor, and teaching ways. So glad I found you. Cheers
Just found you yesterday! So impressed with your work ethic and knowledge. I was raised on a large ranch in north central Texas (flat land). The soil was too clayish to grow much, but my father, a livestock rancher, was very proud of his hay crops. I once asked my father if Texas A & M taught him everything he needed to be a successful farmer/rancher. He told me that although he read a lot of material at college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry, the farmers on either side of our ranch helped him the most! As for the women, my mother, and grandmothers did a lot of canning (dilled okra, pickled beets, plum jelly). They have all passed on now. I miss them and find myself longing to do the things I fondly remember they did. Thanks again and happy growing!
you are pure light. encouraging and inclusive to all- beautiful efforts🌼❤️🌟
Omg this is so exciting! Can’t wait to see how they grow!
Who cares about your handwriting! You know what it says. You do so many other things soooooo well!!! You are so talented.
I’m so happy to hear Kip is doing so well. I think him often
Turk’s Turban is my absolute favorite!
This is a great video, I have watched it several times. Since I was starting my seeds indoors, rather than directly in their new homes, I did not follow the vinegar jugs approach, but I did use some small, plastic apple sauce cups. It worked out great, I have Jack O' Lantern and Connecticut Field pumpkin seedlings erupting all over the place! Thanks for the inspiration!
Fun video! I can’t wait to see the progress and also to watch the cornfields take off! Reminds me so much of my grandparents cornfields in Missouri. What great memories. ☺️
How fun doing my squash and pumpkin now too. 👍
God bless and be safe 🙏💖
I love gardening!
You’re living my dream life. I’d do anything to have a big area like this to plant! Hope you have a huge bounty this year!
I’m excited to watch for your pumpkins and squash!!!
You have so much experience growing up on a farm, love that you share all of it with us!! Thank you, love your videos!!
Kaleb, I love to decorate with pumpkins 🎃 especially the rare, unique ones. I’ve never grown them but I have grown some little gourds to use in my fall decor. Can’t wait to see how your do this year!
I can tell you love what you do …..NICE!!!
Very helpful video buddy , I’m hoping to have a heck of a pumpkin patch this year , love your jug technique
Wow that's a lot! I'm interested in seeing how you water this area!🥴👏👍
Have you ever tried soaking your seeds in water for a few hours before planting? I do, and the germination rate is up over 90%. I just soak the seeds, plant 3 in a clump and then thin as necessary. Most of the seeds will germinate so you can plant fewer seeds and thus saving money. Just a little tip. 👍👍
Hey, Kaleb. Your handwriting has character! Did I see “Polar Bear” on your list? Have you tried Red Kuri? I just put my seeds in this morn. Beautiful country! Beautiful smile. 😉
fabulous
That is such a beautiful backdrop when you are planting. It is so perfect and vibrant it actually looks like a fake green screen image lol. So beautiful. Love the plastic jug idea I’m gonna have to ask my neighbors to save them for me now. But do they blow all over when you have windy days? I really like the way you stagger the plants and plant one and each side of the bed seems like a really great idea I’m about to start planting my squash, first time from Drexel, so I’m gonna use some of your techniques thank you.
Amazing view!
OmG. I’d love to have this amount of land for planting specially aloe and another healing plant
This is so great
Came for the pumpkins.. stayed for the food wow!
I thought my hubby and I had a big Garden! wow it's beautiful
Shared!! Please keep us updated on your process and progress. Interested in heirloom pumpkin growing and have had problems previously......lots of flowers, no pumpkins
Excellent video. I get so excited when your videos pop up.
Good information
Thank you
I grew Cinderella pumpkins last season and I loved them. Do you have any trucks or tips to help keep the water from collecting in the concave pumpkins.
I know some of those seed packets!!! I've planted some ornamental pumpkins for mom this year too and some ornamental heirloom yellow squash... purple & black tomatoes...little gem lettuce...rainbow carrots, scallions & cakes went in tonight as well as some black peony poppies and hot pink nicotiana....fingers crossed I keep it all alive!!!! Both my dad & grandpa had huge gardens, I did not seem to inherit that gene...thanks for showing us how to do it!!!!
Your soil is so rich and fluffy. We have a lot of clay on the east side of the Mississippi, up river from you. This year I’m trying diatomaceous earth to reduce bugs chewing on leaves. Worked well when I was a “back to the lander hippie” in Kansas in the 70’s.
Pumpkin watch 2022 is on!
Such beautiful land! So peaceful. I am shocked that you didn't bury the seeds at least 6" in the ground. Curious to see how these come out. Thx for posting this. Please live on the kitty & Kip. God bless.
Gee I feel so inadequate. I’m planting 2 pumpkin plants. And a Blue pumpkin plant.
Rvalene, I'm right there with you... I have 4 and I feel overwhelmed. Hopefully I can keep them all alive!!!! I had an "opportunistic " blue pumpkin grow a few years ago, right at the edge of my driveway....I did nothing to it and it still gave me a beautiful new pumpkin that fall!!!! I was so happy!!! I love the blue ones!!!
I'm a little early to the party when it comes to pumpkins. Last year we celebrated the end of harvest by smashing one pumpkin... silly us, we didn't clean up the seeds. I saw pumpkin sprouts? shoots? babies? seedlings? I saw pumpkin seedlings in the early spring (March-April) and thought I'll water them and see what happens. Connecticut Field Pumpkins is what's happening now. I already harvested two, still have two more ripening, and countless others beginning to develop. It's never too early to practice carving skills 🤷♀️🤣
Please make a video on winter storage of squash, potatoes carrots and onions.
The soil looks rich and fertile which probably helps the pumpkin seeds grow? Those of us who live in areas where it rarely rains in the summer wish we could get by with only watering occasionally?
I look at the plastic jugs as helping to create a crib for the "baby plants" or an incubator like farmer's have for the "baby chicks".... Growing up in a rural area I can say farmers and their kids are No strangers to work.
Cinnamon works very well for all kinds of bugs
How did you prep your field? We have a space that we planted and it’s just awful with the weed. We clearly did not get ahead of it. But I’m also thinking the field prep could have been better.
That’s a lot of plants. Do you have irrigation in that field?
❤❤❤
I’ve got pumpkins growing in containers. Do you think they will do well. I live in Ohio
How do you go from thick grass to such nice soil?
Do you have problems with deer or other critters eating the pumpkin blossoms?
So Kaleb, do you plant the corn field and harvest it too? If so you are really really a busy guy!!!!!!! Your yard and all the gardening keeps you super busy let alone having to do field work. No wonder you are as thin as you are! 😲😬
Where can that special lined grid paper for planning be purchased?
Don't you get high winds there? Do the jugs blow away sometimes?
Wondering the same thing
What does your family farm?

is there an update for this?
I had a puppy frenchie glaring at me today, you win. If you have any time over, check out the frenchie bulldog Cashew, you will understand 👁️👁️✌️
