The person with the biggest influence on British popular music culture over the last 50 years, and he's not been about for 20 of them. So many happy memories listening to these shows, thanks for posting
Growing up in a Jamaican family, born in the UK I absolutely loved listening to John Peel at night while in bed with my transistor radio hidden under my blankets so my parents could not hear. I was not always successful; they would come in and tell me to "Turn that radio off". Thank you, John Peel, for all the memories and the introduction to Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Thank you to the uploader. I really miss living in the UK in the 70's. It was not so bad.
The dilemma of home taping a two-hour show - a C90 cassette would usually give you better quality sound than a C120 one but you'd lose the last half hour; a C120 tape was much more likely to be fragile and temperamental; two C60 cassettes per show would soon get expensive. And that's without the wildly differing quality of tapes available from various manufacturers. Trial and error eventaully convinced me that TDK tapes were the only ones worth buying; they would probably still play today. As for the rest - crumbling to dust by now, or losing/lost their magnetic coating. Nothing lasts for ever ...
Still.got.loads.of mine left including a fewJohn.Peel.shows,worst.tapes.in my opinion were Virgin records.pre recorded ones. they were.cheap and nasty 😎 like me!!! 😁
Same, but my dad's old cast-off Philips reel to reel with a 'magic eye' recording level, and taping Peelie over my sister's expensive and probably rare pre-recorded Bowie tape 🙄
Those 2 hours were fantastic, in another world from parents, life, we were in an exclusive club, John peel spoke to so many generations the same way. Brilliant days.
One thing I notice is how little work Peel does during the show. The occasional comment, but mostly just this band, this song and then he plays ALL the song without talking over it. A lot of modern DJs could do with learning from him…
Exactly! One of the reasons I liked Peel apart from the music, was just that, most DJ's back then all liked the sound of their own voice, & seemed to want to be stars! BBCradio6 purports to the the sons & daughters of Peel, but most presenters are the modern equivalent of Dave Lee Travis, ie like the sound of their own voice and seem fake, RIP John & thanks for the music & thanks for uploading this
Peel knew we were all taping, he would say, 'pause tape' after a popular tune. I disposed of twenty years worth of John Peel Show tapes back in 2006, not knowing that I could have transferred onto my computer, so thank you for UA-cam.
christmas time was great being a teen in the late 70's and early 80's, down purely to Peel's festive 50. it is a shame there aren't a lot more surviving festive 50 shows.
In 1980 I sent a stamped addressed envelope to John Peel and in return I got a paper print out of the festive 50. Technology might have advanced but the mystical magic it conjured up will not be equalled
Got a 120 Pure Ferro and a timer, stolen from my mothers garden lights for late night schow...both worked perfectly...while i was in the city with friends...everytime great fun to hear the show next day 1:13:42
I would like to ask where do these recordings come from? At the time they would have been broadcast on AM radio but the sound here is better than FM-quality so it can't be a recording a listener made in 1980. Do the BBC really have high quality recordings of everything ever broadcast and if so how did you get access to these tapes?
@@caphep radio 1 broadcast some of their shows on vhf/fm right from their birth in 1967. However they shared the fm/vhf band with radio 2, so the peel show was broadcast on radio 2’s wave band as well as radio 1’s mw station. What you’re referring to in 1988 is when radio 1 got its own fm frequency, and listeners no longer had to tune to radio 2 to hear the peel show.
Peel and Tommy Vance. Only shows worth listening to, and sadly, nothing has replaced them that's any good. Tom Ravenscroft on 6 Music is JPs son, and he does a fair show. Just peed off that both the BBC and Glastonbury have shunned his name over abuse claims that were never substantiated.
He wasn't. Times a lot different then. Girls threw themselves at guys like this. He was a young guy enjoying himself same as I would given the chance. It went on all the time. Totally different to the Jimmy Savilles of this world.
John's affliction wasn't pedophilia, which has a specific definition and relates to prepubescent children. I understand that people repulsed by his honesty want to claim otherwise and use the word "kids" in relation to him, but that doesn't make it accurate or change any of the history. In this very show he laments Clare Grogan not showing up for a lunch and I remember his discomfiting obsession with her. Grogan was 18 and Peel was 41. He wasn't totally lacking self-awareness about it and joked at his own expense (but seemingly couldn't help himself either). Not saying any of this in approval of his behavior or excusing it - it just wasn't pedophilia.
Weekdays 10-midnight, me and my transistor and John Peel. The sound of my teenagerdom, and a lifelong influence on my musical taste. Thanks John.

Wish I could come home one weary night , switch on the radio and hear that voice just once more.

What a different world 😆
I ve got over 100 tdk tapes with vance and peel from 1981 to 1985. The playback quality is as true as the day i recorded.
It would be hugely appreciated if you could digitise and make available for posterity! @@petertraynor440
I still listen to my C90 TDK tapes and they still sound as if I'd just recorded them.
Nothing better than having a brand new C90 and doing a "Peelie"!

JP like what he played so he was just anything listener. Not many in his mould sadly.
I totally agree. In the modern era DJ'ing's all about talking over 'records' as a means for achieving celebrity.
Wirral's finest.
Off to bed Peel is on. Those were the best days.
The thinking man's radio presenter, and a British National Treasure. John Peel forever.
John Peel introduced me to a vast amount of tip top bands thank you very much Sir !

Enough said

Yup! Similar time to when I threw out all my vhs tapes, same reason. Some Monty python sketches gone for good
How have I ignored Bow Wow Wow all these years 🤦🏽♂️ this, is why; he is the best radio DJ of all time
In loving memory of my father (rip) who invites me to the fascinating world of John Peels radio show when I was 15 years young...📻🥲❤️
Groovey people, yes, yes we were, and still try to be.
Listening to Peel During my "A" Level years early 90's.....got me through it.
Great sound quality. Best John Peel upload for sure !! All great sessions particularly The Ruts . R.I.P Malcolm & Paul.
God The Ruts were so bloody good. Saw them once 🔥🔥
starts the show with Bow Wow Wow ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It was JP in 1980 that got me into music. Best few years ever, listen to the crap that's on now.
Beautiful. Awesome transfer!
Loving listening to this on a shitty Sunday winter’s night. Please post more? Jeez, life was so great in the early eighties. Cheers!

Amazing! Thanks a lot for the sharing! 🙏💜
What a great show
What a loss. Life would never be the same after his death.
Thank you for uploading.
Wow, what a line up!
Yes !
The sound quality amazing, l wonder what tech he used. Though this show is a game of differentiate the yodely guitar band ;-)
BBC didn’t skimp on quality - there’s probably pictures of studio on interweb somewhere. “yodely” LoL - but true
Great stuff !
Bunnymen were clearly still working out Heaven Up Here song there

White Wulf of Wessex, is it possible to have the whole playlist with bands and tracks? I can't recognize some of them. Thank you! 🙏🖤

It was recorded off air on a reasonable quality (“pro”) cassette deck, but it was broadcast on FM. So yes it was a listener 🙂
Thanks. Radio 1 didn't start broadcasting on FM until 1988, so did they repeat old shows from 1980 on FM? I don't remember that. @@bassaxist
