Just a quick note for Arturo, there is a knife crime problem here in the UK but it's mostly in the larger towns and cities, however, on a per head of population basis there is a higher rate of knife crime in the US than there is over here, it's just that you have so much gun crime over there in the US that you don't get to hear about the "stab work" as much and here it stands out more.

Really important comment. It's a talking point in the US that there's a lot of knife crime here, as if it's merely a weapon substitution issue. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even if the US didn't have a gun crime issue, the knife crime rate would still be significantly worse.

The USA suffers 5x more murders per capita every year than us, and about every country in Europe. So however many knife murders we might have in the UK, it's barely an issue compared to what's happening in the USA.

There is a skewed perception at work.

I live in the UK, and apart from 1/2 dozen inner city shithole neighborhoods in the whole country I would be quite happy walking at night. Despite what you hear we have less than 1000 murders a year and most of those are either gang on gang or acts of domestic violence. Visiting my daughter last year near Portland Oregon we went to Cannon Beach, beautiful spot to walk her dog, This place is rich mans holiday destination. While walking we met a lady whose dog was playing with ours and we stopped for a chat, I couldn't help noticing she had a gun in a chest holster. I couldn't help thinking if I felt so unsafe that I needed a gun walking on beach I would go 300 miles north and live in Vancouver Canada. Thankfully most people in Oregon don't buy into this stupid idea that guns keep you free, they don't they imprison you in fear, like the woman on the beach.

I always find it interesting when somone from the US talks about the high knife crime in the UK. I see it in UA-cam videos and I've heard both US politicians and US chatshow hosts talk about it. Knife crime in the UK is high by OUR standards, which is why the UK media highlight it so much. As others have mentioned, fatalities from knife crimes in the US is actually higher per capita than the UK. It's got closer in recent years, but the US is always higher. The fact that the US media outlets don't report these fatalities from knife crimes as being a big issue is probably indicative of the high number of gun related deaths.

Per capita it's significantly lower than at least some states in the USA and about on par with the safer US States....
The only time statistics show the UK to be significantly more stabby than the USA is the number of stabbings as a percentage of total homicides.
41% of UK homicides involve a sharp object (knives machetes etc) whereas only 4% of total homicides involve a firearm which is less than strangulation and no additional weapons (kicking, punching etc)
In the USA only 11% of homicides are stabbings whereas 46% are from handguns and a further 15% from other guns or firearm of unspecified type

I'd agree with the 'young men between 14-22' statement. From personal experience though, that's all you need to be wary in small-town UK. No need to be gang/drugs related. Just a young male at the wrong time, wrong pub.
I actually felt safer moving to London as it was easier to avoid the dodgy pubs. Chance of being mugged was probably higher in London but much less likely some over-hormoned yob would decide you'd be his next 'fun' target on the walk home.

Also these numbers include gang related violence which is the vast majority of our violence, gun violence and mass shootings. UK only has about 4000 members while the US has over 1,000,000. Thus is why our numbers are higher.

The US is an outlier for dozens of reasons. No non residential publicly funded mental health care, 30X the drug deaths per head of population compared to European countries, some of the highest inequality levels in the world, extreme poverty, poor to nonexistent public health care, unemployment help for just six months, terrible gang controlled prisons etc etc. The US has a problem with mass shootings, but it also has a massive problem with mental health, drug dependency, gangs, corruption, poverty etc etc. Until crime starts to reduce in the US the population aren't going to accept stricter gun laws. Because they use their firearms to literally defend themselves.
Britain is more like EU nations in regard to it's social structures but the question you should be asking yourself is why Britain has more violent crime and even mass shootings than countries in the EU with liberal gun laws (With very nasty mass shootings in 2010 (Cumbria) and 2022 (Plymouth). If it's all about the gun laws then why is heavily armed central Europe so much safer. Perhaps Britain needs to improve it's mental health and social inclusion policies. But the British way is to just ban things. This can be seen in the fact that Britain is still experiencing mass shootings decades after introducing some of the toughest gun and weapon laws in the world.

One thing not clarified here is that 'self defence' does not constitute a 'good reason' to own firearms in the UK.
On the subject of whether it would be possible for the US to change their stance on gun ownership it would be worth looking at the changes that came into place in Austalia following the Port Arthur Massacre. Parts of Australian society had a very similar relationship with guns to that in the US before these changes were brought in, and so it is a better comparison than the UK, where gun ownership has never really been a popular thing.

0:32 "there's a lot of stabbings because of the absence of guns..." that's actually the wrong way round, America has a higher knife homicide rate than the UK, and the guns are a big part of the reason, for one thing, guns being available so readily means that people at minimum need to defend against guns, and if they can't get a gun themselves... you might feel you should at least carry a knife, anything is better than nothing. And because the same laws that protect carrying guns, cover other offensive weapons too, you're allowed to carry a gun, so you are allowed to carry a knife. So you have more knives on the street, and more knife related murders, because of the guns.

The gun laws were only slightly amended in 1997 to require revolvers like the one used at Dunblane to be longer than 60cm. So now in Britain you can only own a long barrelled pistol. The change was purely cosmetic. In fact the revolvers are now actually more deadly as the long barrels produce more energy in the bullet. Since 2010 British gun laws (Northern Ireland didn't change their laws after Dunblane) are being gradually relaxed. Britain has always had two forms of licencing. Normal through the police, special through the home office (under section 5, 7.1 or 7.3 of the firearm act). The Home office is issuing thousands of hand gun licences a year in Britain. Just without the publicity.

Regarding knife crime in the UK. Stabbings are seen as a big problem in the UK, and ARE a big problem looking at it from a British perspective. However, the US has as much knife crime per capita as the UK. It just doesn't get the attention it gets in the UK, because US knife crime gets completely overshadowed by its massive gun crime problem, which isn't the case in the UK. So it is incorrect to state that the UK has a bigger knife crime problem than the US. It doesn't.

Vermin clearance (it's easier to hit crows on the wing with a shotgun than a rifle, and if you've got a rat problem a shotgun blast can handle multiple rats at once), clay pigeon and target shooting, sometimes putting down injured animals that you can't approach to use a captive bolt gun, and are thrashing around too much for a rifle shot - or of course you can load the shotgun with slug instead of shot if you could take a rifle shot. They're more flexible, so a shotgun with different ammunition is a better option.
Mostly it's farmers and land management types though.

I could not find much data on Australian mass shootings but I did find data on the murder rate in Australia when guns were banned. In 1996 murders were already on a down trend from 1990 which is where my data begins. Then when guns were banned in 1996 we don’t see the numbers drop instantly its a slow down trend with many small spikes until 2003 (six years after the gun buy back ended) where we get our first major decline since our data started in 1990. The main problem is that before the gun buyback murder rates had dropped just as fast. What Jim did was set up mass shootings and used it to push his argument and then just straight up ignores murder rates as a whole because the ban had no effect on them.

@@nuttycommuter3718 Jim also thinks that there is only one good argument for having guns and that is “I like guns” this is a straight up wrong statement. There are many reasons to own a firearm other than just the I like guns. First off, the police will not always get their in time (or at all) to help you. Second, the second amendment was written to ensure that we had the tools we would need to overthrow the government if the need ever arose and guns are the tool we need to do just that. Third, to put food on the table. Fourth, sporting (target practice.). Jim seams to not realize that these “assault rifles” are a perfectly good means of self defense. He has absolutely no ground on which to stand the fact that the media likes calling black guns with a telescoping stock and a pistol grip an assault weapons does not mean that they are not great defensive tools. They work just the same as any other semiautomatic rifle they just look a little different.

However, if your house is burgled and your 70” tv is being stolen and you shoot the thief are we really saying that the value of a 70” tv is greater than that of a human life? I’d suggest that whilst the theft is a despicable act the taking of a life in recompense is totally disproportionate.

They are just issued with zero publicity to people who are either rich or know people in high places. It makes sense as imagine a James Bond type retiring from spying. Highly trained, lots of people wanting to hurt him. It makes no sense to assign him a bodyguard 25/7 with less training than him at massive expense. Same with politicians, if they are ex army or ex military letting them have a hand gun saves the tax payer 100,000s a year on police costs. They would just have to do the Firearms Safety Test for professionals every year. The way Australia seems to do it is your licenced to body guard yourself.

In the US we have over 350 million “documented” people but the numbers are probably closer to 400 million. We have a terrible prison system and the mental health system is even worse. We do have restrictions on firearms and who can legally carry them. The problem their are more violent criminals and mentally unstable people who are not treated and will not stop doing what they do. Crime was much lower when we had state mental institutions (a lot of them were horrible places). More people are murdered by fists, feet and objects than they are by all rifles combined in the US. More than 60% of firearms deaths in the US are by suicide. Most of the other deaths are gang and drug related and or police involved shootings with suspects. Majority happen in the inner cities. Their are a lot of stolen firearms used in the gang and drug related crimes do to improper storage weather it be in a car or home. Their are around 400 million guns in the US. It is and would be impossible to confiscate them regardless of the constitution because those are the known guns, not the privately manufactured or illegally transported (from out of the country) guns. The only people that would hand them in are the “law abiding” which probably wouldn’t go to well. The criminals who are armed to the teeth with illegal weapons, some of which are illegally modified to fully automatic would never hand them in. Many towns and cities do police buyback’s (which actually makes no sense since they were not bought from the city, town or police in the first place) but most of them are old junk and the people turning them in just use the money for new stuff or ammunition. We need to do a whole hell of a lot better with our mental health system and definitely need to stop the revolving door of multiple offenses violent criminals be let back out on the streets. We are not perfect by any means as a country but until outsiders see the psychotic mentality ill people and violent criminals we have roaming our streets up close and personal, you would get a better understanding of why firearms owners are reluctant to deal with more bureaucratic restrictions while DA’s in the cities hand down light sentences or no sentences at all for criminals and maniacs.

Here in Scotland, you need a licence to own an airgun. A few years ago, just before that law was introduced, there was an amnesty whereby you could surrender your weapons. Our Police don't routinely carry firearms, but we do have Armed response units. Our gun ownership rules changed after the Dunblane massacre.

Yes, we do have a share of our very own gun related incidents that did happen here in Australia which are,
(1 One) The (1984) Father's Day Milperra Massacre on the (2nd) September, (1984) in Sydney, New South Wales that involved in the shootout war between the Bikie Gangs of both of the rival groups of the Banditos & the Comancheros.
There were only (7 Seven) people were killed & (28 Twenty-Eight) people were injured in the incident of course.
(2 Two) The Hoddle Street Massacre that happened on Sunday, (9th) August (1987), in Hoddle Street, Clifton Hill, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, in which resulted that (7 Seven) Deaths & (19 Nineteen) Injured by a 19-year-old former Australian Army officer cadet Julian Knight was caught in nearby Fitzroy North and arrested for the shootings.
Julian Knight was later sentenced to (7 Seven) concurrent sentences of life imprisonment with a non-parole period of (27 Twenty-Seven) years for what was described by the presiding judge as "one of the bloodiest massacres in Australian history.
He owned a Number of licensed weapons which are a .177 calibre Daisy BB air rifle, a .177 calibre Chinese air rifle, a .177 calibre Crosman model 766 air rifle, a .22 calibre Ruger model 10/22 semi-automatic rifle, a 12-gauge Mossberg pump-action shotgun, and a Chinese-made 7.62mm calibre M14 semi-automatic military rifle. Knight retrieved the Ruger rifle.
The motive of this gun incident by Julian Knight of the Hoddle Street Massacre is unknown of course.
(3 Three) The Port Arthur Massacre that happened on the (28th) April, (1996) in Port Arthur in Tasmania in which the perpetrator of Martin Bryant who actually did killed (35 Thirty-Five) people & injured (23) people, He was given (35) life sentences of imprisonment with OUT Parole for these murders of his shooting spree.
Martin Bryant's suspected motivations for the massacre were the refusal of the sale of Seascape by owners David and Noelene Martin and to become notorious, as revealed by his lawyer, on the Channel (7 Seven) program Sunday Night, air date Sunday, 6 March 2016. From the moment he was captured, he continually wanted to know how many people he had killed and seemed impressed by the number. Bryant is allowed to listen only to music on a radio outside his cell and is denied access to any news reports of his massacre. Photographers who took pictures of him in his prison cell were forced to destroy the film in his presence when the Governor found out.
(4 Four) The Strathfield Massacre was a shooting rampage at a shopping centre in Strathfield, Sydney, on the (17th) August (1991).
The shooter was Wade Frankum, who killed himself as police arrived at the scene. The incident left (8 Eight) people Dead and (6 Six) Wounded. He (Wade Frankum) who was armed with a Chinese-made SKS Semi-Automatic Rifle & also a 50cm Bowie Knife as well too.
The motive/s of this incident by Wade Frankum are unknown of course.

I have both section 2(shotgun) certificate and section 1(firearms) certificate, as mentioned there are different hoops to jump through for each one. S2, police need a reason not to issue, whereas S1 you need to prove why you need one. S2 allows the purchase of as many shotguns as you feel you need, all must be correctly stored, S1 states on the certificate what caliber of weapon you can have, how many (usually 1-2) and the number of rounds of ammo you can hold at any time. the larger the caliber the less you can have. 22rf 600-1000 is common but 308 etc is around 300 or less. As for black powder, well that's another story.

Just think of the level of anxiety knowing that any time you could be randomly shot at work, school, in traffic, while at a concert or just in your backyard waiting for some celebratory round from a drunk neighbour to drop on you - low chance but not unimaginable.
At least in Australia we know if we are shot it will by - in order of likelihood - 1.) someone we know well who owns a gun (zero chance for most) b) an overwrought police officer while you are having a public psychotic break (not zero chance heheh , iii) driving through one particular street in one particular suburb while shouting insults about one particular dodgy guy’s mother. D) after scamming some major drug dealer who you have known for some time. Otherwise, pretty much zero chance of random death by gunfire.
Whereas in the US you can get shot in a cinema for talking too loud or playing loud music in a car park or getting in the wrong car by mistake. Freedom. Right.

The only people I saw openly carrying firearms were military and law enforcement personnel, and people in gun stores. My ex's father has half a dozen guns. Several handguns and two rifles. I didn't see any of their guns until I asked to. This was in and around St Louis too - the most dangerous city in the US. Because I'm British, I naturally can't carry a firearm. Despite being unarmed in a nation with over 120 guns to every 100 people, not once did I feel like I was about to get shot. The possibility didn't even cross my mind once.

Okay this is all my British perspective on US law
The American Second Amendment has issues as it was written for those old single-loading muskets that weren’t that accurate and took time to reload. It wasn’t designed for modern weapons.
Then you have the US Supreme Court ruling on how the section of “as part of a well-regulated militia” should be interpreted as random individuals comprising a loose national militia.
If everyone who owned a gun was part of a local town/county/state-run militia that made sure everyone kept up with gun safety and best practices it would prob be better for society and still work with the existing local culture

Those guns/ammunition were kept at all times in a locked cabinet inside a locked room. The farm owner held those keys at all times. It was the Dunblane Massacre in 1996 in Scotland where a "Scout Leader" with a grudge, walked into a Primary School and shot 1 teacher and 15 5 year old kids dead and left many more seriously injured.
It was this disgraceful act that had the UK decide on our gun laws.
As to knife crime, there has always been knife crime. But in my community as a kid, you could play with knives but knew you had to be careful. I remember after school this kid pulled a knife on a kid he called out to fight.
We were disgusted, all jumped him, "cowards use knives", took it off him and he got a fat lip.
Whereas now we have "cultures" new to UK and kids now carrying knives as an excuse for protection.
Two friends and I were jumped by a gang from no where, an actual "racist" attack on "whites", would you believe one night mid 90's. I had a butterfly knife thrust in my face, so close to cutting my eyes. I managed to get my friends we escaped, but one of us was been cut and had to go to Hospital. These guys were scum, looking for trouble and easy targets, they couldn't have took us with fists, in fact one of the lads had beaten two of them in self defense.
I had never come across such hatred before or insults that made me laugh, if this had happened today and been "on the other foot" it would have been on the news.

Also - the proportions of knife crime have already been mentioned several times; with a gun you can kill 20 people in seconds. With a knife you can stab one, maybe two, (not necessarily kill them) and then everyone runs away and can't be reached by the knife any more. The potential for mass killings just doesn't exist with a knife in the same way as it does with a projectile weapon.
