As always , I live in New Mexico and so much appreciate any video about desert camping and living. It's nothing like the wood wenners that have everything at thier feet , this is hard living , hard land and survival. We don't have a nature mini mart around every corner. So much thank Junkyard Fox.
Like the video. One thing I learned growing up in Colorado. If you remove your shoes for sleeping, place a sack or pair of over the tops of the shoes/ boots to keep anything from crawling inside while you're asleep. Spiders, scorpions, snakes etc.
I love how realistic these videos feel about what camping is really like. So much over polished bushcraft out there and these feel like getting back to the roots of it like those old DC videos.
It's nice to see you back out there. I'm glad to see you eating a healthier not a lot of YT channels cover health foods while camping. Stick with it and take care of your body, its a survival skill after all.
Nice relaxing video. You are making me miss camping out in the SoCal desert, I moved to the Midwest a few years ago. Good stuff, thanks for all the great content!
When you are building ground shelters using tarps, remember; Low & narrow = warmer Less air circulating is less air your body has to warm up, low and narrow is always better. Use the extra tarp material for the bottom for insulation layers with dry grass in between to prevent loosing heat through ground convection. About your cooking - you will get a better caramelization (nice crispy outside and keep the moisture inside) if you throw some pure butter in the pan on top of less oil when using a cast iron skillet…just a personal tip.
Your videos are great. I like to live through them. I wish I could go back out and camp but unfortunately my mother has been dealing with lung cancer for going on three years now. It's getting worse so I had to leave work back in May to take care of her. Your videos of camping is my break, my oasis if that makes sense. So keep on doing what you're doing. And quit apologizing for lightning or wind etc. We love it. 🙏
You got me hooked on these sides i rewatch this video Alot and every tim i see those i remember finding these sides at Walmart and they are in all my videos when i cook outdoors. Love the channel. I hope i get this good at UA-cam someday
Cool bushcraft camping video. Not to many YT campers do videos in the desert. Most of the videos are in the woods, and the mountains. I'm not knocking camping videos that take place in forests, and mountains, as I love camping, and enjoy going up to a mountain forest, and smelling the fresh pine, listening the gurgle of a mountain stream, and witnessing the breathtaking sight of the sun rising over majestic snow covered peaks in the morning. I also like going to the desert, as long as it's in the cooler months, and love going to the beach. Videos that are in the mountains, and the woods get a little old for me, and would like to see more desert, and beach camping vids. Seeing the desert bloom with color in the early spring is a sight to behold, and nothing is more relaxing, and refreshing than finding a nice secluded beach, where it's just you, the sand, the surf, the fish, and a gentle sea breeze.
Junkyard Fox back with another great video. These are the vids I always enjoy James. Keep em comin brother. Big fan here for years now. Hope you doin well man. It seems u are.
Your low light filming worked out great!!! People gotta know how to operate in the dark. Keep up the great work fellow desert rat. Not many of us around surviving.
For the past few years I have watched several different individuals provide information, demonstrate skills they use when out and about their local area, but they realize each time is different. Be yourself, use your skills that you know will help you be successful, and continue to provide demonstrations of those skills for other people to use and/practice if they find themselves out in an area that you live in on a regular basis. I share this because of my experience with different environments and assisting others learn skills so they can be successful when they are out on their own near their homes or events and activities. Continue discussing safety we need to be aware of while practicing the skills we need to know if we decide to go out in an area like you are in. These are just suggestions, but I believe it is important for us to know. Thank you for taking the time to read this comment and respond if you desire to do so.
New. Just catching up on your videos. Heres a salmon cooking tip amigo. I cook it on a bed of sliced red onions. Butter or oil on top with your spices. It doesnt burn! Put a lid on it if you want to poach it - keeps it moist and cooks faster. Enjoy.
Great to see you back in the saddle, from the clips you showed from your vacation, you were only a couple hrs north of were I live in Oregon. You got lucky with the weather, seems like it's been raining for here for ever up until this last week. Great camp, good looking food 🥑 ( don't be afraid to pull that salmon off a bit earlier, it's way better medium rare), very nice my friend 🤠
Beautiful knife, Beautiful shelter & beautiful scenery, my indigenous brother! I'm #Chicasaw & #Blackfoot My great grandparents were Native American slaves owned by the Moore plantation. I'm living in a bushcraft shelter in Burlington Vermont as a civil rights investigator. It's quite cozy. I had to put a tent inside the shelter because we got hit with -40° wind chill. My sleep system is awesome but I still needed a bit more protection in those deadly temps. I'm working on videos of my fort to post on my channel. It's not monitized, yet. I'm in the middle of the Cuomo investigation so I don't have time to get my videos made. Glad you popped up in my feed, again. I see I'm subscribed but haven't seen any of your videos in my feed. I hit the notification bell so I will be able to keep up & help your channel. We're dealing with snow right now. This video makes me itch to go back to Arizona. I love the Southwest. I think you got very blessed with the beautiful Southwest sunset & night sky. Everything looks good from our view! Papa Bear Knives Essentials.
Glad to see you're back at it my friend! I love knorr rice and that looked like a fantastic meal! Rushing happens to the best of us. Desert cold is no joke, that temp difference from the day and night is very noticable. A much different story from the north where it's just cold all the time. Great video and I'm looking forward to an awesome 2022, can't wait to see what you have in store for us!
I really enjoyed the "Let's go camping and hangout" style of the video. I am REALLY getting tired of the wannabe super campers/bushcrafters out there who edit everything down to perfection. Like a lot of dudes would have cut out fish going in the pan cause it wasn't "perfect" and just showed it being set on the fire. This was a great, "Come with me" style video. Keep it up and subbed.
im sure an rv can be fun and has its benefits, but it cant compare to truly immersing yourself in the great outoodrs, the warmth of the fire, the chirping of crickets, the stars overhead.
@@JunkyardFox They have been lifelong friends. We have taken different paths, but I respect their decisions. Keep up the good work and thank you for inspiring this 64 year old to keep getting out there.
Might attempt to only use the two cross yucca stalks tied so the thick ends touch the ground...with a plow point tarp set up. Use a stick at the tie down points with rocks piled on top as if in the snow. Thank you for your sharings.
I really enjoyed your video. Mojave desert winds can wreak havoc on tarps even when secured and the incessant flapping will keep you awake all night. Cant wait to get back out into the desert. Thanks
This was as real as real is. The Wind. Everything is different here and a challenge. Error can be fatal solo. That's the First Realization. There is nothing weak in the desert. I got infection last..2 falls ago in White Mountains of Az..if I had my wits about me I could have flushed wound with my syringe used to backwash water filter. Story and a tip. Again, I really enjoyed the video. Wind, burns, Plans GTH immediately after boots on ground...hahaa. Real. Thanks.
Nice video.I really enjoy the change of scenery from the woods & mountains on other channels. Though I do love the woods and hills, it's nice to see how you use the local resources to accomplish the same task. The tarp worked out well. Was wondering if you'd ever get it tied down in that wind. Might try letting the fire die down to a good bed of coals, adding one piece of wood occasionally. Keeping the flames down seems to keep the oil from flairing up. Here in KS the yucca is smaller so not much use for shelters as good as yours. Enjoy your balmy winter.☺
Try the MSR Groundhog stakes. They are in the Y or inverted triangle configuration that grips the sandy soil better than a small diameter round stake. They are hard enough to drive into the rocky Arizona ground - even at Picacho Peak, which is nasty. Most Y stakes are too soft for Arizona. They are still pretty light and come in a mini, regular and large length/width.
Great video! Looking forward to your next creation! You mentioned weight concerns. I am a Registered Dietitian. Some *healthy* foods are high in calories like, avocado and nuts - eat them but in lower amounts. Anything from a restaurant will likely be high in calories, fats, refined carbs, sodium and will usually be weight promoting.
Your mistakes and hardships are even cool. Keep up the adventures Bro. I wish I was out there with you. But unfortunately I’m stuck in the city being a “responsible adult”. But one day I’m gonna be free.
Amigo, those knorr sides are really good, I like both the rice and noodle dishes. I haven't tried the butter and herb flavor but now I think I will, you made it look really good

Same here. I really miss those high desert nights - with skies so clear and dark you can watch the satellites go overhead.
