- We have finally begun our corn harvest for 2021! Today we are hitching up 3 horses (Buck, Ken, & Lady) to start to pick corn. We are using our motorized cart and corn picker. I will show you how I hitch up 3 horses to the cart using a 3 horse evener and then we head out to the corn field... to be continued!!

I can only wonder 🤔 what those Horses 🐎 say to each other when they are alone back at the barn?? Maybe something like, 🤔 " Hope Jim learns how to pick corn 🌽🤔 soon.". Great fun to watch. Jim you are so good with your horses! A person could learn alot from watching you. Have a very safe 🌽 harvest. I have picked corn with a picker like yours. They love to take fingers,hands and arms away from farmers!!! Thanks.
Jim makes the "doing" part look easy, explaining what he's "doing" while "doing" takes away the natural act of doing. The task at hand is much easier when you work with a similarly skill helper than a trainee. Brenda, don't get too frustrated working with Jim, we as husbands/fathers tend get occupied and forget our families aren't as skilled at what is being done as we are.

You are correct, horses are STRONG, had God not ordained that man would be in charge of the animals they would do what they wanted ! What a great team, despite a few small incidents. I would not want a clanking engine powered machine chase me down the field !

Would be interesting to see if 4 horses would be balance and work better than 3.
Maybe Ken thought he was about to get stung by a yellow jacket, between the sound and color of the drill. I'm sure he must have run into them somewhere in his past. Something like an elephant being afraid of a mouse-animals aren't aware of their own strength and if they were we could probably never control them-except by bribing them with grain!
Very good video. I enjoyed hearing Jim describe what he was doing, looking for and why. Your use of remote microphone is working great. Allows Jim to work and talk to us at same time. I grew up watching my dad pick corn with two row picker mounted on International H tractor. The use of horses is very interesting. Thanks for showing us how it is done. Have a safe harvest.

Only somebody like Jim can try to drill a hole when the horses aren't even tied to anything. I wouldn't advise anybody else to try it. My horses certainly would not have tolerated that.
I hope it went well for you. Looks like when you started that motor up out in the field they didn't like it one bit. Maybe put some sheet metal under your seat to defect the noise backwards. I bet they have a hard time hearing ya sometimes too. You are one so good with them and know when they need space. Neighbors don't use horses and both the soy beans and corn are still up. May I ask do you see any mule working around your farm .
My grandfather has mules and build roads back in the 1900 in Texas .
As a kid I remember seeing photos of his mules and just how big they were in the photos.
I am a old man now on my road to the end of life fighing cancer .
I like look back as a kid I used a mule on my mom garden he was old and smarter than me but he was safe and not let a kid do things wrong I knew at 12 I trun him lose and he go to the barn to gets just a little kid walking behind the mule in his bar feet so times the dirt get hot but I really did not care baby then .
Sorry talking to much now just laying in this bed want to the end of time.

Catching this the day after you posted. Some of the horses' expressions matched some of the expressions of the darling kindergartners I taught today 😆 The little sweeties are absolutely precious but missed their preschool or junior kindergarten programs because of the lockdowns that began 19 months ago. For 5 year olds that's a lot of development time. Understandably they're behind expected levels in all areas, especially behavioral. The education plan is firm nurturing, hold fast to the expectations and give lots of encouragement. Basically it's what Jim was doing with Ken 😆 Honestly the expression on Ken's face seemed to be sorrow for disappointing Jim! Just like the Kindergartners who forgot and took Play-Doh to the carpet 😆 And the other horses seemed to be thinking, "Oh no, you've made Jim unhappy, now we have to go back to the barn 😕" ... just like the other Kindergartners who gasped and had their hands ready to put their Play-Doh away because of the ones that took it to the carpet 😆 Of course I didn't have to be worried that my little charges might rear up and charge off, potentially causing injury and damage. Otherwise it was just too similar not to bring a smile to my face ☺️ And you know what? At the end of the school day, my little pumpkins asked me if I'll miss them 💕 I sure do miss them already! Please keep the little ones in your prayers as they catch up with what they lost because of covid policies. If you're ever inclined to make a long video of the quieter farm noises I'd definitely play it during the quiet times in the classrooms to calm the kids down. As always, I enjoyed this video 💕🐎

Jim, you know your horses so well! From watching your videos, that's just Ken😉 One of my granddaughter's 20 year old horse hates pool noodles, especially on the scarecrow. He didn't like trailering either, but they (and I) just love him.

Just for information, the planer noise was very annoying while Jim was speaking. Just saying.
For a team rookie like me the third horse hookup is very confusing. I wish i had more knowledge so that it would make better sense to me. I will learn in time watching Jim. 👍

Jim, I know that your horses are well trained and follow voice commands, I notice that your horses wear snaffle bits and not the common driving curb bit. Do any of your horses have a "hard mouth"? I had a pony growing up that had been used poorly by previous owners who had a very hard mouth, and we always used snaffle bits, but that one mare was high strung and had run away with her riders, so we used a plain bar mouth short shank Pelham with her. Eventually we were able to retrain her to voice and leg cues and we were able to use a kimberwicke snaffle with her, but it took time, she had learned some very bad habits.
Yes, I have had plenty of horses that have a hard mouth. I was never a fan of the curb bits/Liverpool bits.

it's how far north they are. here in virginia we try to plant by april 15 for sweet corn on the 4th of july and an early october field corn harvest. up there it's probably may or early june before they can start planting
