  • Today I am going to a horse pulling competition at Gouverneur Fair. I also explain why I choose to go to horse pulls with my draft horses. Today I am using my Belgian team, Lady and Bill.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Jim, you remind me of a man and team I saw out here in Washington state at a horse pull. All other competitors were yelling and screaming and whapping with the reins. This one guy and team were just quiet. He spoke quietly, his horses were calm, leaned decisively into their harnesses but did not lunge explosively, and guess what ... they won all their weight classes. You remind of that guy, Jim. Like you, he did logging with his team. They pulled heavy all year round. Your horses are really fit and lucky to live the life they were intended for. For them, a horse pull is just another day of almost-normal work!

My joy with your channel is many fold: Christ centered; family centered; and horsie centered. I have never felt you have mistreated your horses. God made these horses FAR stronger than man. They are a gift from God and thus you are caring for them properly and they are earning their keep. I also enjoyed watching you two eat that pie. I am on a diet so I can enjoy pie watching you. Eat more pie.

@Mark Kuhne I completely agree... I have marveled at times in thinking that the large breed dog that I love so much could kill me in my sleep if he wanted to... and yet he draws as much love, companionship, and comfort from me as I do from him. God gave us a special gift to live with and to have relationships with animals. It is truly something to marvel over and enjoy.

Biology. Biology and evolution made horses stronger than human beings. And way to indirectly dismiss all their hard work and all the time and effort they put into maintaining their horses by attributing it to God lmfao. I'd be mildly offended but to each their own.

Wow , look Jim is wearing a shirt with sleeves and collar !😃🥼. Thank you for your explanation, I know from when I rode horses a lot, they loved the work, and they really enjoyed the hard rides, horses love to work and they do it willingly for you because they are treated well and want to willingly obey your commands. I really feel you don't need to justify yourself but its good that you did explain. God bless you and take care.

    Well done Jim and Brenda.
I don’t claim to know anything about horse pulls but from watching your channel I can see the horses definitely enjoy it.
We can all see from your channel that you care deeply about the welfare of your horses and would not do anything to put them in harms way.
As I say I am no horse expert but I think it is true to say that what you do at the horse pulls or in logging back at the farm is no different than people in Alaska who use Huskies to pull sleds (excuse spelling if not correct).
The internet is a great thing but unfortunately one of the downsides is that people feel very free to be critical…… and often not in a constructive way.
I have found myself being attacked in ways just for making a comment or sharing and opinion. So you are definitely vulnerable to some nasty criticism when you run a channel like this.
I would have to think twice before I could ever criticize you Jim because you are obviously skilled and knowledgeable in what you do. The majority of us watching you probably have very little first hand knowledge of what you are doing and therefore need to be respectful on what we say.
So try not let the naysayers bother you too much…… and I can tell you are effected by negative comments which is only natural when you are so passionate about what you do.
I sure hope you don’t let any of this discourage you from running your channel. I feel you do a great service to share your life and work with us all. 99.90% of people in the US and elsewhere would never get to see or experience what you bring to us here through UA-cam.
Best thing you can do is not get drawn into these touchy issues and if people have a problem then they can choose not to watch and just move on.
I also don’t like all this left and right and liberal and conservative labeling that goes on so much at the moment.
Everyone needs to learn to chill out and maybe they would find we all are not on the fringes and can actually get along pretty good in the middle.

We love watch Jim work with horses. I didn't get to ever meet my moms dad because he passed away before I was born. Grandpa Harry was a lumberjack among many other jobs he did with horses back over 100 years ago. His brother Steve ran the dairy farm so they hated a lot as well. You give me an insight of what my grandfather did and I'm very thankful to you. Blessings from Ed in Rumford Maine.

A big part of my appreciation for your channel is your code of ethics. When I was a kid, many decades ago, my friends and I raced our horses (bareback) for fun. One girl rode a pony and we always gave her a head start. I’ll tell you, it was almost impossible to hold the other horses back till it was time to go. When we took off, the horses almost left us riders behind but for our hands tangled in their manes. We were flying and the horses loved it. Their “try” could make you weep and I have no doubt Bill and Lady have that try and enjoy their work!

I have never competed in a pull myself Jim, but my family has competed at varying levels and the one thing I know from them is that the horses have to enjoy what they are doing. Like you said, physical and mental preparation is so important, but like people, the horses have to enjoy it..........if it is not what they like, they will not even try!!
Most of the people who are showing "concern" are well meaning, but ignorant of animals and how they work. I think of the deer population as an example. "City folk" want the wolves controlled as they move to the suburbs, and the deer population explodes. They have never seen a deer literally starving because of over population, the crops they destroy causing food costs to rise, all because of an image of a big bad wolf devouring a defenseless "Bambi".
Anyways Jim, I enjoy all your videos and I respect what you do with your horses, knowing the training, preparation, and feeding required. You take suck good care and the horses trust you........that is what matters most!!
Please don't let the uneducated get you down and feel you need to defend yourself........you don't!!!

Congradulations JIm, But the real Credit goes to Bill and lady, they did what you asked of them and did it well enough to take 1st place. as far as the guy who complained and said he was "unsubscribing" I wouldn't worry about that. Some people just don't know enough about horses and their individual personalities. and their willingness to eagerly do their task as best they can. And as everyone here knows all your horses get the best care. I've been to a few pulls, and almost all the owners. share your love for their animals. and they all get good care. and they are born to do what you ask of them. All creatures of this planet, are God's creations and he made them well. Thanks for your concern to address that guys fears. but again. do not take it to heart we all know what and how you treat your horses. thanks again for taking the time to bring us along, and for all that you do by and for providing your videos. A lot of people don't realize but horse like the attention they get at shows not only at pulling events. My daughter used to show one of her horses in English riding type shows and her horse would perk up and show him self off differently than when she was at home in the pen practicing. Your horses love what they and you care about them. Keep up the great content you can't make everyone happy.

I remember the vid where you pulled that UPS van out of the ditch. It was shocking how exuberantly they jumped into action. It was indicative that horses have a personality where they want to prove themselves as much as any athlete! I believe they really process applause and praise as much as we do. Go praise a horse!

    Congratulations!!!
Bill and Lady are absolutely beautiful horses, and watching them do what they were bred to do, is very impressive.
These horses could never perform the way they do without your care, and dedication to their health and well being.
As with most domesticated animals, especially those bred for a specific job, part of keeping them healthy mentally, is providing them with a purpose, or job. Yes, mental health in the animal word, is a thing, and something most folks don't think about.
When I first started following you, I did comment to the fact that "they seemed to enjoy their work'. I believe your reply was " yes, I think so". A very honest answer, since we really don't know what an animal is actually thinking. But they still have a way of letting us know, if we pay attention, and actually listen.
    Thanks for sharing!

At 7, my dad and my grandad used to take me to horse pulls. They critiqued each team, spotting those that were trained and worked daily and others coerced into to pull. Both of them had plowed, hayed, and logged with horses. My grandfather even drove the mail from North Adams to Savoy in all kinds of weather. The proof of the quality of your team and the bond of trust between you is the way they hitch. It's not crazy, or frantic, but all business. Yes, when you say go, they "hit" the load. That is necessary to overcome inertia. It not cruel, it's the mechanics (think weight lifter.) They know what they're doing because they do it all the time. They are conditioned athletes. So congratulations on a well deserved win! I subscribed tonight. You've taken me back to so many happy memories, the clump of heavy shod hooves on a wood floor, the smell of warm horses, and the sound of a trotting team as my grandad drove me home from school. He clipped their manes just like you do. God bless.

I love horse pulls. There is a skill to compete in these events and Jim, you are a true horseman. It's easy for people like wee "pony girl" to claim "i don't like horse pulls but" then comment like you're the only one who cares for their horses, which shows how ignorant these wanna be horsemen are. YOU and your family are true horsemen and thank you for showing and educating about this sport and working with large animals. I look forward to fair season so i can photograph the great American and Canadian teams that come to our fair circuit.

After seeing Jim working with his horses and the way he takes care of them, there's no way he would do anything to hurt these horses. He knows these horses and what they can or can't do. He would never do anything to harm these animals. These horses are bred for working/pulling. To them it's fun, just like people who like to go work out at the gym. Horse pulling is like any other sport. If you enter truck pulls, race cars, play ball etc, you want to do your best, showoff what your horses can do. They give their best/all and you are proud of them for doing it. To those who condemn Jim for doing this, you don't know what you're talking about, so shut up.

Congratulations! Those horse teams there loved to show what they do best! Just look at those ears, head set, and proud stepping afterward. Hoping to go to the horse and pony pull coming up in Menomonie, WI in September. I used to go with my dad and am so happy my oldest son will help me to go to the horse pulls when we can go. If it is too hot or too rainy, no one bats an eye to cancel at the last minute. Everyone there has the best interests at heart for these wonderful animals God has blessed us with here on planet earth.

Like most of us horses learn early on they must earn their keep and they trade effort for hay, grain and shelter in winter. We can't assign human values to animals and basically they respond to trust, training and kindness. I'm sure Jim's horses, given a choice, would rather romp and graze in the fields all day rather than pull heavy loads-who wouldn't? LOL! But they have accepted their fate and place in the world and appear to be healthy and happy in their work. Good job with them Jim!!

Congratulations Jim, don't care people not agréé. That's the bad side of the social media. People are free to talk badly coz they are anonymous. Your way is the good way. You work every day with your horses for plenty différents types of work. Youre the one who know if they are able to do or not. Its a real pleasure to see how you manage horses, how your'e calme and patient with them. If i saw farmers working with horses in France when I was kid, I Never use horses to work
on farm, but I have been jumping rider and after horse race trainer for around 20 years, so i know horse, i know relation between man/horse, its why I appreciated your vidéos, coz your'e the model of the good horseman. Thank you.

Jim talking about how much he enjoys watching horses work in the woods by himself made me tear up. His passion for working horses is something I very much relate to. Not a lot of people have that fire in their heart towards things like that now as we use mostly machinery in today’s world. This channel has been a huge inspiration to me. I wasn’t around horses until 5 years ago when I got a job doing carriage rides for my city downtown. My boss has told me many stories about him logging in the woods and doing farm work with the drafts all his life bc he was born into it. I’ve always thought that was SUPER awesome and something I’d like to do in the future. I work my partner, Bill, a 12yo black Percheron, only 3 days a week but man, I love it. He does his job well and works hard. Something about working together makes you and the horse have a STRONG bond that I’ve never felt with anything else. Communication and bond is HUGE with working them. Not everyone has the fire for it. I will own my own team one day and it’ll just be us, the fields, and the woods. Best believe they’re gonna be black percherons lol. Sorry for rambling. I’m being emotional over horses haha. Thank you for the videos!!

I remember as a youngster my great uncle would harness up him team of heavy horses to work his crop and sheep farm. The horses were so glad to see him in the mornings because they knew it was time to go to work. They would work until lunch time and then it was time to,go back to the stable and hitch up another team for the afternoon. The horses knew when it was lunch time because they would slow down and not work as hard. These horses were bread for this type of work.

Your humility, in answering those negative horse pulling comments, is commendable, you're such a gentleman . However, your livelihood and the horses you love -it's obvious- and depend on, makes you the best judge in deciding whether your horses are at risk. Social media seems to make people so very much more outspoken and intrusive.
