i was raised in Clear water Fl. about 78 or 79 the local radio st. 98rockwas holding their annual Halloween ball and Stillwater opened for Alice Cooper I went dressed as a bong with dry ice smoking out of the top and bowl I won the costume contest first prize was $98 and got to party with both bands all night GOD DO I MISS THAT ENTIRE ERA THOSE WERE THE DAYS
Bought the vinyl in 1978 after seeing them on the OGWT in the UK. They had film of 'Sam's Jam' being played at a Capricorn Records bash in Macon. This is a GREAT album! I still play it.
I talked to Rob Walker about that song a few weeks ago. Ask him which night club the song refers to on the Gray hwy. I used to go there but it was a different club then. I am going to sit down with Rob and get the entire background on Stillwater one day.
Stillwater used to play at The Pass in Richmond Va back around 1976-77. I thumbed from my high School football game in Chester one Friday nite to see them. Great Great band live. My southern Rock Band Southern Cookin Played Fantasy park off this album.
My hometown band....saw them countless times through highschool years and beyond...not underrated by those who got to hear them....and it only took one time to be hooked. They are still playing together every so often....still fabulous. One of my top 5 albums of all time.....but I am biased and was spoiled by getting to see them live so often.
When I was stationed at Warner Robins (1972-75) we used to see them at the Holiday Inn all the time. As I recall, they were like the house band. Stillwater was amazing!! I was so pleased when their first album hit the shelves in '77. Great band, great album, great memories. Lived on base and in Macon on College Ave. It was an incredible time to be living there, the peak of Capricorn Records; The Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Captain Beyond and so many others. The civilian that worked in admin with me blew my mind one day when he walked in with a new LP under his arm, said it was his brother's band... Third Annual Pipe Dream by The Atlanta Rhythm Section, guy's name was Steve Hammond, Ronnie's younger brother. They too took off and found the footlights. Stillwater will always have a special place for me.
Wow I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I am . I bought this album a very long time ago in a Woolworths discount bin for .50 cents I had never heard of them but for .50 cents RIGHT.and I couldn't believe how good these guys were and to find they did the song mind bender BIG PLUS and give a listen to a beautiful song april love thanks youtube
Thanks for posting this awesome music! However, the order of the songs is different from the originally released album. Here is the correct order for anyone who might be interested: Tracks 1. Rock 'n' Roll Loser (Rob Walker) - 4:14 2. Out On A Limb (Bob Spearman, Jimmy Hall, Mike Causey, Rob Walker) - 3:57 3. Sunshine Blues (Bob Spearman, Bobby Golden, Buddy Buie, Jimmy Hall) - 3:37 4. Sam's Jam (Allison Scarborough, Bob Spearman, Bobby Golden, Buddy Buie, Jimmy Hall, Mike Causey, Sebie Lacey) - 9:36 5. Mindbender (Buddy Buie, Rob Walker) - 4:14 6. Universal Fool (Buddy Buie, Jimmy Hall, Rob Walker) - 6:58 7. April Love (Buddy Buie, Mike Causey, Rob Walker) - 4:08 8. Fantasy Park (Allison Scarborough, Buddy Buie, Jimmy Hall, Mike Causey, Rob Walker) - 4:07
Bought this album for a buck at a record exchange in Blacksburg Va. in 78’ while going to Va. Tech. Wore it out and still have it. Besides great music one of my all time favorite LP covers.
First heard the song Mindbender covered by a Boca Raton high school aged quartet called Four Play. They got me hooked on this song back in the 1970’s... still love it, and Stillwater.
I used to help Jimmy, Bob, Rich and John setup for local shows. Good band, saw them play many times. Jimmy was the first I ever saw use the “voice box”.
I was listening to the Radio back in 1978 & Recorded these guys playing at a Bar called the Four Acres on WOUR in Utica, NY & then bought this album the next day. Still love listening to both Live & Studio versions.
Just caught the movie "Almost Famous" on TV last night. One of my favorites. I was curious to see what was on UA-cam so I searched for Stillwater. I'm glad to have found this. I Enjoyed the album. In addition to the Southern Rock sound I here reminiscences of Boston and Yes, particularly in Universal Fool, but others too. Maybe Boston borrowed some of their sound.
@@banishedfromthedwarfplanet530 Yes, in the movie Almost Famous there was a made up band called Stillwater (it says so in the caption) and I was saying that both the real and the made up band sound very good.
FYI the album sides have been reversed here: side one of the original album (august 1977) opened with "rock-n-roll loser", with "mind bender" being the first track on side two. on a side note, kudos to the artists who did the stunning album artwork. if you enjoy this album, make sure to check out the first album by sea level (1977), too.
Oh yes, I well remember Stillwater. I was 15 when this album came out. We loved "Mind Bender". They were A LOT like Atlanta Rhythm Section. GREAT musicians.
I built my own custom guitar because of them. It had a Fender style decal logo that said Bender and of course a half moon that said MIND above the logo, and also instead of contour body it said Original Groovy Body
Probably the best ham band, that never really broke out like they should have!Rumors have it that phill Waldon had spent his money all on The Allman Brothers and when Molly Hatchet,Stillwater both got ready to Break out, there was a coin flip for which band would get promoted, Hatchet won,so Stillwater was left in the was with the other hundred bands fighting for air time; But in my Humble opinion,They deserve to be mentioned with the Best of the Best Southern Rock Jam Bands! Bar None! But hey in a WARNER ROBINS HOMIE
A great southern rock band from my hometown of Warner Robins Georgia those boys would rock the house
Great musicians
Not sure I would call them southern rock. They were had jazz and blues influence. I will ask Rob if Stillwater considered themselves southern rock.
Mind Bender!❤ Martian cigarettes! Songs imprinted in my memory from the first listen! (9th grade) P.C., FL
I can't imagine why or how they would object to the title of "Southern Rockers". In some bad company!
Brownsville Station.
Fantastic band and album, so sad only known by insiders of southern rock fans in germany!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Very Cool memories for you.
Best comment... So underappreciated
I partied with the band in early 1980 as well.

Saw them several times at the Club 50 there on Robins AFB, right across street from the bowling alley/BX complex.
Use to listen to them practice in the building across from the USO club...
Warner Robins GA!!!
Awesome! I'm 61 and this is still one of my favourite LPs.

They were awesome and friends with my x and his roommates. We used to party with them and put them up when they played in Blacksburg at 117 S. Main.
@@tinamcelroy4870 My favorite show ever at 117 S. Main was the Dixie Dregs. Loved that place.
I spent wayyyyy too much money at Record Exchange, as well as Round & Round and Books Strings & Things. I miss those days in Blacksburg
Great show at south main.
I can definitely remember some of it

Wow such a great band. They need more recognition

I use to watch them at a local bar in WR all the time. Cover was 10$.
Their best album .
TO HECK WITH ALICE COOPER. THESE ARE HOMETOWN BOYS.

This is Not the Same Band as in "Almost Famous"
@@Shivaho I know that. I discovered the bank, though, because of the movie.
That's how I wound up here. I have zero regrets. Good stuff that I will be listening to more.
From Warner Robins Georgia
My home town 🤘
An Excellent album and band, Saw them Live opening for Charlie Daniels way back when.
I'll have to keep my Gibson Les Paul Custom away from my Fender Stratocaster's shapely body and long smooth neck with its sweet luring voice.
MIND BENDER
Rob Walker wrote Mindbender.
SOMEONE TOLD ME ALICE COOPER DOES NOT GO TO CHURCH .
Hello please do you have tabs for 3. "April Love" - 11:17? thank you!!!
Both bands are awesome even tho one is fictive.
Fictive?
