I'm gonna be here in 3 months (May 2015). Traveling around Germany for 9 days for a college trip. This looks a lot more fun and interesting than America.

You know Angola? Luanda? It is beautiful too, for maybe 1, 2 or 5% of the population, while the rest lives in poverty and many even in extreme poverty, Luanda is one of the most expensive cities to buy one flat in one of the new skyscrapers in the City center... until 2005 there has been civil war in Angola. Oil is offshore and most oil comes from a huge (I think one of the worlds largest) offshore platform or even more than one, since Nigeria has the highest production costs for a barrel of oil inside the OPEC (because security, private security in most cases is driving in the Niger Delta Area on speedboats which can get extreme fast compared to other vehicles (self made speed boats, with a usual engine often, you know that one you can take away from in most cases plastic or in some cases even old fisher boats from the Niger Delta as the water is full of crude and no fishing is possible, 32 US-$ per barrel in first half of 2017 I think were the complete (all inclusive, security, transport to the oil tanker, poor people of course are angry and some people use this as legitimation to attack oil infrastructure or steal oil from pipelines,
destroying them by this and leave a hole which creates more oil swimming on the top of the river or beaches/coast line...Angola is "lucky" that its production is quite far away for civilian/pirates and security is therefore only basic but at least helicopters are flying often western experts in and out, since they try to hire as much and of course as cheap as possible people from there, with a payment which is in Europe or the US the minimum for 1 hour of working (8.50 US-$ around?! almost everyone gets more except of course illegal migrants, no taxes here but risk for both, owner and worker...Luanda had already in 2014 over 6.7 million people... as said for foreign people one of the most expensive cities in the world, in 2014 a flat in the center could easy cost 15,000 US-$ per month renting it... I guess a bit more now. They use parts of the oil money which gets into federal budget, as on the way much is lost because of the corruption, they did build a series of larger petrochemical complexes in and around the city, also food business as well as textile factories... as its directly at the coast the transport is not far from the offshore oil fields, often switching with Nigeria the place no. 1 as "africas largest oil producer", exports are larger as domestic demand in Nigeria (over 140 million population or so?!) of course is higher than the demand in Angola...but the companies/factories above of course created some jobs, but not enough for millions of the slum population... I do not know if you can rent one of these best placed flats in smaller or larger buildings at the Park Avenue in New York, and if yes what you pay monthly to rent it?! I mean 15,000 US-$ or more per month in Luanda is more than most slum workers will make in their entire life I guess...

Fresh water is even worse I think, as more as you get into the east, the water gets worse too of course, people need to walk to the next water well...but for the tourists places etc of course some areas are "clean" from poor people livig there...

Always check the lowest 10 - 20%, and not the highest 10% which spends, the data is from 2000, until oil price collapse and financial crisis it even increased, but the highest 10% by income were spending 74.5 times as much per capita than the lowest 10%, until 2008 this became over 100 times I think...in Germany the South is very expensive to rent/buy a flat or even a house, Munich and Stuttgart as well as Frankfurt are crazy! but they have a good economy, Berlin is quite often visited by tourists and many jobs exist because of the tourists or many shops exist because of tourists spending money, otherwise the smaller ones would have to close... reunification did cost like almost 3 trillion US-$ or more than 2 trillion €uro, I think closer to 2.5 trillion than to 2 ... but you have social security payments federal and some people have private ones as a investment you know... for their pension... and all the people which came, from North Africa, or through Turkey...
to Greece for example, and they are out of danger there but they go for Germany, they only want to get to Germany because of this system and their organized begging, using smaller kids or sometimes babys...large problem like 15 million additional South and Central Americans and Mexicans would come all tomorrow, all at once... and all of them get financial help in large amounts... Scandinavia is smarter and of course much smaller by population, Norway no EU-Member and all other countries with the highest living standards in the world do not accept it, but Germans got this nazi complex, even after such a long time, I am no "real" German, here born yes, but roots from Poland and dual citizenship since 2011 also the German, as EU Member states you can keep both if you want, I thought why not keeping it?!.... they need nuts to say "stop, this is enough!"

First visit last week and really great city. BUT! The modern architecture is a shock. Beautiful at Potsdammer Platz but dreadful around the beautiful Brandenburg Gate. Embassies that wouldn't be out of place in a poorly planned industrial estate. Knock em down and start again! IMHO ;) :-)

it depends on your job... But it seems like todays Germany is entering a golden age. Never before in history has it been surrounded by allies and friends, never has it been more popular in the rest of the world and never before has it been more wealthy, even in the face of a global economic crisis.
If you are trained in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or informatics/programming you should find a well paid job. If you are trained in elderly / medical care you should find a job easily as well, but maybe not as well paid.
it also depends in which city/region/area in germany you will live :)
