    Getting a new computer is always exciting! Honestly for Cybersecurity and relatively straightforward content creation and editing, that build should have plenty of power. The nice thing is that if you need more power, that motherboard can support higher RAM and you can easily swap your graphics card with minimal effort. The one thing that you're probably going to need is more RGB! That build needs to look like a Christmas tree.

      Thanks, Jon! I decided to pursue the minimalist look with the RGB lights. I am hoping this machine lasts me a while, as this was a significant investment. Hope all is well on your end!

      @@collinsinfosec my UA-cam build from when I started my channel ~4 years ago is very similar. It wasn't necessary to use the top end parts but that system still runs like a champ for everything. I hope that you get the same kind of lifespan on your build.

    Nice desk & chair choices. Lumbar support is very important & the option to stand with the desk is great for your body. Im actually in school for cybersecurity & planning on building a pc soon too.

    I use a 3060ti for video rendering myself, I am just learning about video rendering lol but I love it so far. Main GPU is a 4070ti because I am a gamer. Also that PSU is surely more than you need lol running 2 GPUs at full power while gaming and recording and my i9-3900k running at 50% load. You really have a nice/clean setup with more than you need my guy!!!!

    Buying rgb so it can glow red if you've been compromised. Smart thinking
    (also gives better fps on on games with red RGB - sorry had to get that in)

    Hey grant! Was watching this video and I know it’s one of the older ones on your channel but I wanted to ask something real quick. When you’re talking about why you never chose to use linux and windows for your computer, i was wondering why you never bought a separate drive, installed Linux on that drive and then just choose at boot which OS you wanted to boot into. I understand vms would be easier for you however this was just something on my mind when I was watching this video. Keep up the good work man!

    Hey Grant, awesome video. In a lot of your videos you discuss using VMware or VirtualBox for setting up your homelab. Have you tried Proxmox for a homelab yet? Now that you have a solid homelab desktop, I think it'd be cool to see a server build for a future video.

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  10 місяців тому +1

      Hey Joe, great suggestion. I use VirtualBox or AWS primarily for my homelab stuff. I have Proxmox loaded into my old computer. It doesn't work too well. Hoping to have a dedicated server build if I could afford it one day.

    I was impressed to hear this build is only 1800 dollars for a desktop with these specs, right on man. If you doubled the price you could get a Shitbook Pro for only half of the performance lololol. If anything I would have invested in an i9 CPU, not that the one you have is bad, but the extra cores can certainly be useful in cybersecurity and for video editing, although with these types of videos, the CPU and GPU you chose are certainly sufficient. I'm excited to see how the content evolves going forward :)
    P.S. I see you're rockin the Amazon Basics mouse, that's based af with this build LMFAO

      Of course it does. To handle multiple vms you need a hefty bit of ram. Even something like basic brute forcing, 8gb of vram is terrible, you wanna make sure your cpu and gpu have the resources needed to perform a wide range of attacks like pitchforks and clusterbombs. Good luck brute forcing 14-50 character passwd's with a shitty cpu. So basically the build you have matters quite a bit.

      Correct title: “I’m not a gamer - how to build a decent PC for video editing from my knowledge”
      I’d expect a “my cybersecurity study setup” to include:
      1. Software Security measures like Ctrl Alt Delete before login, secure boot enabled, no usb start up, OS modifications to prevent the replace sticky keys “hack”, no wifi on start up, anti-virus software and tools
      2. Must haves for anyone doing Cybersec, maybe a Win7Forensics OS not windows 10, Autopsy (runs on windows). He mentioned windows having a WSL (windows subsystem for Linux) but showed the downloadable Ubuntu vm , he could’ve shown how to configure WSL, how to setup Nmap , Vbox, Partition drives and encrypt them with VeraCrypt etc…
      3. Hardware specifically chosen, maybe a cpu core specifically chosen because it couldn’t fall victim to Spectre and Meltdown (tho I think those Mac issues not sure), hard drives that came with encryption or were trusted, a lock on his Pc container unit to prevent access , A SPECIFIC NETWORK ADAPTER WITH PROMISCUOUS MODE AND MONITOR MODE ETC….
      Boss man, good video decent to watch. But this is not Cybersec video, you buy the parts and we can research together what would make “the ultimate Cybersec setup” because I’m actually interested now

    Hi Grant! How are you? Been watching your videos for a few months, they’ve been extremely useful. I’m studying a cybersecurity bachelor and just got a job (first work experience) as a soc jr, are there any advices or recommendations you can give?
    Thank you for your content and sharing with us

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi! Hope all is well.
      I have not been in a SOC role myself, so take this advice as you will. Something lessons I have learned so far into my career journey include:
      1) Take notes and ask questions. Especially when you are new to the industry and a company, taking notes on what internal systems do, internal processes, and even just the tools a company uses can be a helpful reference.
      2) Setup 1:1s with manager. It can be helpful to hear strategic plans moving forward, projects, etc. This may not be as important for a JR SOC role, but may still help.
      3) Be patient with yourself. This is a hard one. When you get into a new environment with co-workers who know what to do during an incident or which process to follow, and you are completely lost, it can be discouraging. Be patient with yourself.
      4) Try to learn about the important company infrastructure and systems. This can be done through asking your co-workers, looking at internal documentation or wikis.
      5) Burnout is real, even when it's fun. Keep your mental health in check. Make sure to break up your days and take some time for yourself.
      Best of luck! Keep at it 💪

    to those of us who only have 1 pc at home, can you make a good homelab set up with dual boot or something? can't afford to buy another pc so going to VM everything

    • @Jakku_Azzo
      @Jakku_Azzo 10 місяців тому

      Yes

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  10 місяців тому +2

      Absolutely. As @morganwalker4477 said, increasing or maximizing your RAM will significantly help with provisioning VMs managed via VirtualBox or VMWare. I decided to stay with one host OS (Windows) and not dual boot. This decision is entirely personal.
      Through the power of cloud computing, a lot of homelab shenanigans can be provisioned via Terraform and remoted into via RDP and SSH. This will cost money, of course. Using an affordable cloud provider (Linode, DigitalOcean, etc) or free tier services on the main providers can help with the bill. But if you are just playing around with a few machines for a few hours, this can be a route you can take.
      I will be creating a "Cloud Cybersecurity Homelab" video soon.
