How Building a Cyber Security Startup Ruined My Life (why I’d do it again!)

  • Ever thought of building a cyber security startup? I did. And it almost ruined my life (in a good way). Here’s some of my lessons learned along the way:
Life becomes much more stressful. This is because you go from wearing one hat to wearing a dozen hats. Except you can actually only work on one thing at a time.
You need to prioritize tasks based on the amount of time it will take to finish and the overall impact it will have on your startup. Saying “no” to busywork becomes
Another useful skill is developing the ability to “zoom’ in and out. This is the ability to pivot from detailed, tactical-level work to big-picture, strategic thinking.
There’s 3 business personalities in all of us. Striking the balance between your inner Tech, Manager, and Entrepreneur can help you deliver clear productivity in a world of chaos.
Building a business can be long and painful. It adds many projects to your life timeline, compressed in a short period.
But in the end, it’s going to be a much richer and colorful experience than just coasting and taking it easy. Which is why I’m going to be working on Teleseer, our network mapping software AND pushing UA-cam content out.

Your videos are incredibly well done and polished. I'm glad you are continuing UA-cam though because you are great at this! I had burnout issues at work also and some health issues because of that. My solution was to pursue financial independence so I could do what I want without having to worry about paying the bills. I still need to stay busy though because a life of leisure isn't very satisfying. But being able to take a nap when I'm tired no matter what the clock says is priceless.

I’m a visual and physical learner by nature. It’s EXTREMELY difficult for me to understand basic Cybersecurity or Networking concepts since I can’t see or touch electrical signals lol. I'm a very physical learner, it's harder for me to learn something only with videos, books, or articles. I have somewhat good memory, so I can still memorize facts but not have a good grasp of how the concept works. This is why I love math and programming so much.

Talking from personal experience, taking the choice to not to follow the standard bussiness mindset and start a community base service where the work is shared with others in a horizontal manner is a game changer. If you get people to align to a higher purpose the way the works is done change significantly, it could be the case that you gain less but your quality life is so much higher and the product is also better.

I have been struggling and going through a lot of pain physically and mentally for the last six months and still have most of them now including GERD, Constipation, physical abdominal pain, back/neck pain, Tourette Syndrome, anemia, Joint pain, eye strain(obviously from the screen) same as the neck and back pain (a lot of note-taking) and a lot of other minors problems that you mentioned here like stress, health anxiety, tension headache. I was even in the ER so many times for the last 2 months. Cybersecurity and sitting in front of a computer for many hours a day is a really crazy field. There are people who are worst than you like me who can't do anything mentally and physically including college homework. Let's stay strong and will overcome this for sure!

6:53 sounds like what I went through related to monitors and brightness. Turning my years defaults of ~70-90% brightness/contrast down to 30 helped tremendously. I had to be careful though because I'm also very sensitive to PWM, which means my old cheap LG monitor was way more work friendly than mac m1 or m2 laptop screens which burns my eyes and give me headaches after 8 hours or so of usage (not counting breaks)
