    The new E-Class with 48-volt technology and ISG
    Also new is the first four-cylinder gasoline engine from Mercedes-Benz with 48 volts, ISG and electric auxiliary compressor (M 254), therefore with intelligent dual forced induction. The inline six-cylinder petrol engine (M 256), available for the first time in the E-Class, also features an ISG.
    World’s first diesel engine with ISG: OM 654 M with up to 265 hp
    The new OM 654 M four-cylinder diesel engine with second-generation ISG and 48-volt electrical system develops a maximum output of up to 195 kW (265 hp) and a maximum torque of 550 Newton meters. An additional 15 kW and 180 Newton metres are available for acceleration. In the course of electrification, the proven OM 654 diesel engine was fundamentally enhanced. Thanks to a new crankshaft, the cubic capacity increased from 1,950 cm³ to 1,993 cm³. The injection pressure rose from 2,500 to 2,700 bar. The particularly fast response and even power delivery are ensured by
    two water-cooled turbochargers, both of which now have variable turbine geometry.
    The OM 654 M also features extended exhaust-gas aftertreatment. Its components include:
    • an engine-mounted NOX storage catalytic converter to reduce nitrogen oxides
    • a DPF (diesel particulate filter with a special coating to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides, among other particulates)
    • an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction; with metered injection of AdBlue®) and an additional SCR catalytic converter in the underbody of the vehicle, with a separately metered injection of AdBlue®.
    First four-cylinder petrol engine with ISG from Mercedes-Benz: M 254 with up to 272 hp
    The newly developed four-cylinder M 254 gasoline engine also features the second-generation ISG. It delivers up to 200 kW (272 hp) and develops a maximum torque of 400 Newton metres. The EQ Boost delivers an additional 15 kW and 180 Newton metres for a short time. The M 254 combines, for the first time, all of the innovations of Page 3
    the modular engine family (FAME) in a single unit. These include the NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating, CONICSHAPE® cylinder honing (trumpet honing) and the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system located directly on the engine. A further innovation is the new double scroll turbocharger with variable scroll connection. The completely new developed turbocharger for the M 254 is the result of a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Turbocharger Development and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. The double scroll turbocharger enables new standards in terms of power
    delivery combined with high efficiency. This can be experienced through an even more spontaneous response of the turbocharger. An electric booster compressor quickly builds up the boost pressure when required - especially at low engine speeds - and thus contributes to a very dynamic response. The combination of precise control technology and the efficient dual forced induction concept in the M 254 also allows the engine output to be increased by up to 30 kW (41 hp) for up to 30 seconds. This overboost function enhances active driving safety, for example when overtaking and
    when driving onto the motorway. The range of electrified gasoline engines is rounded off by the inline six-cylinder M 256 with ISG, which is available for the first time in the E-Class models. With up to 16 kW and 250 Newton metres of additional electrical power and 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard, it enhances the sporty character of the Coupé and Cabriolet.
