I love it!!!! My dad was the same way. If I was interested, he would let me apprentice whenever he was working on projects or fishing. Really endearing video!
That little girl is the sweetest! I'm glad my son is following along in my steps and next year will be starting in votech for electrical! I've been teaching him a few things I learned throughout the years, and I'm quite the proud father!
There are few things in this world that make me as happy as seeing Tommy work with kids and seeing the pure joy in that little girls face while working with tools!
I'd love to work with Tommy. I think I can learn a lot from him. We need more people like him teaching kids and young adults that being a tradesman is respectable, and having a DIY attitude with basic skills should be a necessity like cooking and cleaning.
Keep at it man. Pick up some odd jobs along the way and you have a solid resume for anything you want: company handyman, family-owned business, or your own thing.
Best show ever!!! Future apprentice I hope. Looking forward to doing teaching my grandchildren how to build things. First one is 17 months old so I got a little time to prepare.
its really sad. the guy im working with now, while he is a skilled worker, it feels like hes talking down to me no matter what i do or say, so i just dont really have the motivation to do anything that would help us work quicker. his self-proclaimed observation skills have yet to determine that im doing it on purpose, even though i do hint at it a few times a day, but its barely been a week. The foreman already knows what im capable of, as i helped him start the job. on the other hand, i did somewhat carry another journeyman who was in the business for 30+ years. I was a 1st year apprentice at the time. i was working with him so he wouldnt steal every single ladder on the less than 3000 square foot jobsite, or pull out 50 feet of drag line from the bucket. i was one of the few people that had the patience to work with him, and was one of the very few who he hadnt managed to piss off or just creep out
@@masterbond9 if you can manage to maintain half of the positive attitude that this little girl has then you will rise to the top, and that right quick. This is very exciting, seeing a young person (boy or girl, it doesn't matter) being interested in the trades. As a teacher in both secondary and higher education, I am fully in favour in people getting educated, become practical and think critically. As a polymath, I am a DIY enthousiast, as it promotes independence and increases confidence in one's self. And the reason is my father. When me and my brothers were growing up in the 90's, it was he who exposed us to homeimprovement, DIY and practicality, by letting us assist him in tasks around the house and various jobs, after he retired from the army. Also, we used to have a small workshop in the basement of our house with various tool we learned to use on our own, including stick welding! Well done to the little one aspiring carpenter.
As a daughter my father, an electrician, taught me so many handy skills. He never told me this work is only for boys and his unbiased mentorship has enable me to pursue many professions that were male dominated and my life has been fulfilling. Even though he has passed years ago, his love has followed me throughout the years. This video brought a tear to my eye.
OMG, I cannot like this video enough!!!!! All kids need this type of education. It’s so much easier to comprehend the concept of fractions when you can actually put them to practical use. Also, it’s great to see this young lady learning her way around a shop. When I was in 8th grade (in 1982), I transferred to a public school, where I wanted to choose Shop as my elective class. The advisor said, “oh no, that’s only for boys. You must take Home Economics”. Even after I explained to him that I had just taken Home Ec the previous year at my private school, he still insisted I register for Home Ec. Don’t get me wrong, I love cooking and sewing, but I really wanted to learn about woodworking. Oh well, over the years of buying several fixer upper houses, and with help from my father and brother (and of course This Old House), I have learned so much. This channel is invaluable!
Does it make sense to spend $120 on a single combined smoke/carbon monoxide detector ($840 for a house with seven) if you have to throw it out after five years?
I have heard Richard say that when running gas or water lines it is always best to have fewer connections because the chances for a leak increases. Lately i have seen him using pre-threaded gas pipe up to six feet. Wouldn't it be better to run longer pipes like they used too even if they have to thread them or soldering copper connections instead of shark bites, I know they are trying to be faster but when it comes to gas or water piping i am sure the customer wouldn't mind paying for the extra cost of threading gas lines and/or soldering water lines, i know i wouldn't mind especially if there is kids living in the house. If anyone out there reads my comment please let me know what you think. Thanx
My grandpa and dad showed me tools, and how to use rhem and respect them as a kid. I know how to do certain things now, Tommy reminds me a lot of my late grandpa. I even ordered s Silva Bros shirt. Love TOH

CO is heavier than air. A ceiling detector detects the poison gas when the room is fully filled and this is too late. Better to have a dedicated CO detector underneath the device with a flame.
Every kid can build Tommy you’re the best and I wish I can meet you because I really and I’m says cause I want to meet you because I watch your videos all the time and I really love to build😃😃😃😃😃😃
You may have given me a clue to why the pressure relief valve on my coal boiler leaks. There is an expansion tank and a new feed water valve. I also have a pressure reduction valve on the house water supply. Oh, I just realized that’s not it. The high pressure would need to go through the feed water back to domestic. That is not it. So anyway what could it be? I run at about 20 psi. When the coal boiler gets cranking the pressure slowly rises until the valve leaks.
Dear Ask this old house, Modern smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are mounted on the ceiling of houses, this does not make sense to me because smoke gathers at the top of a house so putting them on the ceiling is the best place, but carbon monoxide is heavier than air so this should be at ground level not ceiling? But they are in the same device.
@22:37 shouldn't the expansion tank be positioned in such a way that the user can access the pressure valve at the bottom? i'm new to home maintenance stuff but that doesn't look right.
So now everyone has bought these smart thermostats etc. Now we find out that utility companies can take control of them and have in a few states to avoid brownouts etc. What should people do now?
Do you have the make and model numbers of those smoke/CO detectors, need to replace mine, slightly older than the ones in the video? Thank you for sharing this important video...
They are likely discontinued by now and replaced by something newer. These episodes are likely about 2-3 years old if they go the same as TOH being posted on here.
They are called Nest Protect. They come in both wired (as represented in this video) and battery only models. They cost around $120 each, so a bit pricey. store.google.com/us/product/nest_protect_2nd_gen
I had Google Nest years ago and they threw false alarms. Had to return them. For the price of 1 Google Nest alarm I can get a 3 pack of Kidde smoke/CO with voice alert.
😂😂😂😂 can't even replace a chirping smoke detector. Which probably was the battery backup. Let's replace all the detectors. $$$$ later 😂😂😂 I bet she can't even load a dishwasher. ! Good luck on turning down that racket when you can't find your phone. 😂😂🤣
I get annoyed when my smoke detector beeps when I need to change the backup battery. I couldn't imagine having those new smoke detectors while I'm cooking. My house starts blaring The Purge horn and then my Nest doorbell camera picks up my neighbors dressed as killer rabbits.
The part i don't get is when Richard says that it was that the homeowner retired, but before he retired and lets just say that they were both at work all day (8hrs) wouldn't it have leaked out of the pressure relief valve. The homeowner says he gets up later doesn't run the water like for about 4 hours after his wife uses the water. Another thing is why is he using the shark bite fittings, those things are only good for temporary use
I wonder why there are so many wires where the smoke detector connects and I sure hope this is all copper, I don't like the silvery color of some of them (I sure hope it is not aluminium/aluminum)...

It pains me to see another plumber who is supposedly well experienced using shark bites, and supporting a heavy expansion tank nonetheless.
the expansion tank is resting on the hot water tank. that should take all the weight off any fittings.
