I got my F2 (second hand from a brother in law changing to Leica) in 1974. Used it with love and passion until 2006 D70s. Fantastic friend. I complemented it with a Nikkormat EL around 1976, enabling me to do B & W and colour but later colour negs and slides mostly the glorious Kodachrome. The lenses are another story.

Couldn't watch your live stream in progress this morning, but finally caught up this evening and just love it! Great presentation! Never could afford a Nikon in the 70's and 80's, but certainly admired the F2AS Photomic and even the Nikkormat EL, while using various Minolta models until 1990 when I finally got an F3HP. Thanks, Gray, Becky and Konstantin for this wonderful program!

Absolutely adored this presentation in memory of the fabulous F2 . Your collection at Gray`s is so massive . Best selection of camera bodies I`ve ever seen . The F2 knowledge from the three of you was such a delight to listen to . I was transfixed . We had known this was in the pipeline for months and when it finally arrived it was a knockout , thankyou so very much . F2 for ever . Mine still perfect after 50 yrs . Never been serviced . Just well looked after .

Hi there great walk down memory lane for me, at 17 years old I started my working carrier for Dixons Photographic in 1977, after a year I ended working in the New Bond Street store which carried a huge range of new and pre-owned equipment I was always drawn to the Nikons. During my Carrier I then moved to Wallace Heaton's also in New Bond Street which I worked at until that store closed in the late 80's In my day I have owned Nikon F, Nikkormat FT2, Nikkormat EL Nikon F2 with the MD2 and MD1 Battery Grip, F2AS, F3, FM, FM2, F4. I went away from Nikon for a few years but you always come back. I just managed to acquire an F2 with a DP1 and DP12 head which I'm using purely for b+w

The F2 was my first Nikon SLR, (1975) and I've shot Nikon pro gear ever since then. (Waiting on my Z9 now!) It was a great beginning to my photography experience, and hooked me on Nikon. Nice!

Just caught up, what an informative session, the lengths that Nikon go to, from the concept, design and manufacture of of their cameras. I was fascinated to learn that many F2s and the like are still in working order and are actually in use. Well done for yet another great stream

I was lucky enough to have been gifted a hand me down F2 when I graduated high school in the 80s. It travelled with me around the world for a decade before I switched to auto focus in the 90s. I loved its mechanical elegance and also the accuracy of the metering with the DP-12 photomic viewfinder.
When you look at all the accessories you have to admire the degree to which Nikon would cater to niche or specialized uses. Being able to transcribe written notations to a frame of film on the data back seemed rather incredible to me when I first saw it.

I used two F2's for years. F2, MD-2, FB-1, Sports Finder, etc. and a host of Nikkors. Both still work fine. After 50 years.

I got an F2 25th Anniversary Edition along with two FM bodies in a purchase last year from an old retired photographer. He had them in a gun safe for 40 years. I wanted his glass, not the film bodies. I never shoot film anymore, but love the old AI and AIS lens. I would sell the F2 and FM bodies. Today is my 50th wedding anniversary, also.

Congratulations on the F2 jubilee edition.
It is a pity you could not mention/show some nice F2 things.
-with the F2 Nikon started giving all the parts of the system a letter-code, like MD-1 for the first motor drive
Some of the bits for the F2 system were single purpose and quite idiosyncratic, e.g.
-the MT-1 interval timer had a (German D.I.N. style) connector, rare on any japan-made bits of the time
-the Velcro fastened MC-7 cable, connecting the MD-1/2/3 with the MB-1/2, also described as the poor man's winter-holder.
-the range of focusing screens, (started with A/B/C for the F) was expanded as time progressed, finishing at the letter T.
    Regards, Gilbert

How would one go about developing a 750-frame-long strip of film?

  • @reinhartreuschel5499

Well, I agree: simply the right rock of granit. Have you noticed that in 1971, the first batch still had the previous 'leather' coating like the Nikon F? The coating then changed to a more fine design. I'd compared this with #7170015 and #7422991. In 1976, in Western Germany a Nikon F2S Photomic black body cost 1200 DM, the MD-2 motor drive 1200 DM, the 250exp.back 1200 DM, and the aperture control motor drive DS-1 1200 DM, too. This kit - together with the data device - was about 5700 DM still without lens. The traffic police in Germany utilised those kits with Nikkor 2.8/180mm and others, they were in use in large quantities built in speed and traffic signal monitoring equipment but also general purpose observation jobs. All in all the F2 may surpass the Nikon F, but the retractable rear panel of the Nikon F was so tight that it did not require any seals. And - as a matter of taste, of course - the shutter release of the Nikon F sounds a little bit softer than the one of the F2 > test the 1/8 sec which is the finest sound of the Nikon F shutter;-)) @philosimot

I met Mr Grays from his shop In Victoria in London few months ago and I explained to him that I brought a black Nikon F2 with the 2 parts motor drives and the camera does not full work when you are using it with the Exposure meter heads which Nikon company name 3 TYPES so he advised me go use a back up expousre meter and carry one with me when I use Nikon F2

I just got a Nikon F-2 with the DP1 Photomic prism and a Nikkor K 85mm f/1.8 3 days ago for Free in a lot of 6 cameras I found on FB marketplace I was about to bother with it because I thought it was too good to be true but it was worth the 2 hour and 40 minute drive. The rest of the cameras were Argus C3, vivitar point and shoot, Polaroid lane camera, Nikon L840, Olympus digital point and shoot and a few accessories. It just needed light seals and dusting.

    CORRECTION.
I don't think the Nikon ad from 1984 was completly accurate. It indicated that Sal Veder used a Nikon F-camera for the Pulitzer Prize winning photo ofa returningamerican POW, later called "Burst of Joy". But in the 2003 Nikon "One Thousand Word"-ad Sal Veder said he took the picture with a Nikon F2 and a 80-200mm f.4.5 Nikkor lens on Tri-X Pan.

My first Nikon was a Nikkormat. My Grandson is now using it. I purchased an F2 several years ago. Took it to the NC Transportation Museum. Railroad repair shop where they refurbished the Steam Engines. Went on a week day and probably walked past where I should have been. Some of the best photos I have. Shot Ilford Delta 100. Wish I could share one of them with you. A gentleman was working on a 50s vintage Streamliner passenger car. He was dressed such that the photo could have been taken in the 50s.

Just got a beautiful black F2AS last week and can’t stop playing with it. Also have an F-1, second version, and it is, as Gray said, silky smooth. Fun to compare the two side by side. Smoothest advance and shutter of any SLR I’ve ever used? That title goes to the Canon EF, hands down.

Remember the Sponge on the screen just fell apart with age. Thanks to you guys you saved it. Plus Tony said the body was in near pristine quality.
Oh and it was the one with the silver Chrome prism not the black one, the one I had was from the USA!
And still works to this day.

Which is the better option, silver oxide 386 with MR9 adaptor or hearing aid 675 with sizing ring, as regards sensitivity and perhaps less important, longevity? I have heard there is also the option of surgically adding a diode voltage step-down.
