Man, this video had it all: killer enlarging lens scanning setup, a fridge full of Retrochrome, and setting up the insane expectations of shooting 4x5 Aerochrome! [sweating]
I've been using a Minolta 80mm f5.6 C.E. enlarger lens to scan for about the past 6 months and couldn't be happier. Not only is this thing dirt cheap and sharp as a tack, but also constructed to interpret a 2D object on a 2D plane.
Ah, the joy of eBay addiction. As to aerochrome I’ve bitten the bullet and resorted to a full spectrum modified micro 4/3. Feels dirty, but the camera and filter cost about the same as a roll of aerochrome these days
If you are scanning with Lightroom Classic, you can actually shoot some kind of correction shot that lets you subtract any kind of vignette your lens might have. Very useful for scanning when stitching.
The 80-200mm f2.8 is highly regarded my man, get it. I'd also recommend the lovely Nikon ais 50mm f1.8 pancake prime. Fantastically sharp with great contrast and saturation. It resides on my F3 for all of my trips.
A man of the people. You have the channel, connects, doe, and addiction to spring on some ebay darkweb aerochrome while the rest of us only dream of shooting it one day. Yet you still chug a bottle of flaming hot Mt dew in solidarity and protest to help bring it back for the rest of us who can't.
In regards to the Leica R lenses, most were engineered and manufactured by Leica in Germany. The budget option lenses were either Minolta or Sigma. You'll notice those lenses say made in Japan on them.
Adapting the 35mm Nikkor to the Xpan gives good results - but at least for me it lead to buying the 30mm lens. Luckily it was ways cheaper these days, but still expensive. And I am more happy with the 30mm lens. Sorry to tell you ;-)
Great video! You mention your eBay addiction; I just got back from 3 weeks in Japan today (ostensibly visiting my sister) and also used the opportunity to go hog wild on Yahoo! Auctions through Buyee, a proxy service. The yen being in the toilet + most Japanese people's preference for new and/or pristine gear means there are some bargains out there, not to mention some of the weird JDM stuff not really sold overseas. I would definitely love to see you make some irresponsible financial decisions on kooky Japanese cameras, drop me a line if you'd like some suggestions.
Jason (If you, Monica, or Baxter get to read this thank you/woof!) I moved into a smaller room with my grandparents and couldn't fit my mini fridge inside for my film. As the main fridge is always full of food, I was wondering what you get for your film and if you have any recommendations for temporary space? Thank you for the amazing content!
you will love the 17-35 f2.8D. the 80-200 2.8D you showed later will serve you well. as well. yu may wish ro look at Nikkor 35-70 f2.8 D Macro. Macro and f 2.8 works thru zoom range. Really a great piece of glass.
Hey those are some cool new pickups Jason 🙂 just a thought -if you pick up a cool new jacket or something like that for Baxter you should include that in the next video.
This reminds me of my quest to try and get either a Contax T2 or Mamiya 7 (or RZ67), but as a side quest I'm going to import some Fujicolor 100, as well as some Velvia 100 and 50... -Maybe Venus 800 too.-
Seeing Aerochome shots just makes me more and more determined to get a camera full spectrum converted, I've actually ordered the EOS M200 that I plan to get converted by lifepixel now, and I eagerly aware the otherworldly shots this will let me play with
I would be interested in knowing what you favorite 35mm color film is and your black and white. I shot a sunflower the other day with my digital camera in black and white with a blue filter and it came out really great.
They're great, but careful with the 80-200 2.8 they're beautiful but some copies can have wear or might have been dropped and can be soft with little change in outward appearance. If you get a good one they're gorgeous though. Not sure if the af-d one works with your setup but i was using those at my college's newspaper shooting ACC sports recent as 2018.
I really love the 17-35mm f/2.8D lens. I have one that I've used on my D700 and on my FE2. The only negative thing I can say about it is that the manual focus throw on this lens, being designed for AF, is not nearly as sweet feeling as a dedicated manual focus lens. Small price to pay for the image quality of the lens though! Another really interesting option for your mid-range zoom would have been the Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 35-80mm f/2.8-3.8. This is one of the best compact, mid-range zooms of its type and you could get it for under $100 with the Nikon F adaptall mount. If you won't use the 80-200mm f/2.8D lens very often, there are a couple smaller, lighter, cheaper options you could consider, such as the Nikon Series E 70-210mm f/4 which is a very sharp and easy to handle lens. There is also the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/3.5, which did come in Nikon F-mount. You could find either of these lenses for under $100. And why bother spending $200-300 on a lens you won't use, when you can spend less than half that much for a lens that is still very sharp, but smaller, lighter, and easier to carry. But, then again, you seem to only want the best stuff, regardless of price, so I'm not expecting you to seriously consider my lens recommendations.
I see a clear advantage in using a longer Rodagon with bigger image circle and move the camera/sensor around instead of the negative. If there were some issues with falloff or any other sort, it will be consistend and you can stitch as big as your image circle goes. There are some kind of "Graflex 4x5" -> Nikon F Adapters, but you will need something like that for X and Y axis if you want to go big. For Pan-F the X-only should be a really good choice. If you have a good/parallel working X/Y Axis moving sensor build, you can even increase the optical enlargement so make a stitch of an 35mm. Just enlarge the negative to 2x the diameter und make 4 images from it with the sensor. Until the grain shows ;-)
Hello. I'm also looking to get a similar setup as this. I was wondering how the focusing/magnification works with a bellows and enlarger lens. How do you make sure the negative fills the frame and is in focus at the same time? It seems to me you would need to adjust the bellows in and out and the whole thing closer or further from the negative at the same time. Any help would be appreciated! thank you!
Sick AF idea adapting R glass to Nikon. I have a Summicron R adapted to my Nikon F and the image quality is insane, but it’s heavy. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
It’s funny how some absolutely hate the reversed images from a wlf. I definitely had to take a couple months to get used to it on my unnamed 6x7. At least we don’t have to deal with it being upside down too like those poor bastards who shoot large format do.
I've been watching your videos for years and you finally convinced me to fire up my old Nikon F2. So I blame you for all the money I'm going to waste on film and developing.
careful with the 80-200 zoom, I had one for many years and it just stopped hitting focus, sent it to Nikon twice and nada - I shot my kids sports as they were growing up - it's a great lens - about a grand new if I remember correctly - caviar mTor
Thanks for the channel. I really enjoy your dry humor and photographic skill, not to mention the gear tips and the fact that it is somebody else going into all these abandoned buildings, risking, life, limb and exotic infectious diseases instead of me, while I get to enjoy the type of photography, which I only aspire to have achieved, albeit vicariously. It is my dream, one day, to photograph a bunch of abandoned industrial sites, especially old defunct nuclear power plants. I just hope that I can only do it as well as you... and live to document it. I just worry about the grain, of all people you are probably the only one, who will truly understand that, and how it will come out.... judging from the old pictures from the Chernobyl Electro plant, it is not good. Maybe it is just because it was shot on an old and tired Zorky with the Industar 35mm lens with slow slow speeds... Hopefully, that is the only reason. Maybe you would consider shooting abandoned industrial sites yourself... so that I don't have to. Sorry, I just strayed from what I really wanted to say... You did a multipart special on other people gear collections, I wish I knew you then. I missed the opportunity to send you several gigs worth of pictures of my collection... and that is only a small part of what I own, just the stuff that I keep at home for projects and tinkering with. I am too lazy to go down to my storage, dig into the boxes and destroy the years of hard work of packing and organizing all of my gear to make it fit into a storage unit, which is supposed to contain all of the s-h-taff that you can cram into a one bedroom apartment. I think I would definitely score some points with my Rollei 35 s, Rolleiflex T, full collections of Minoltas, Niconos IV and V, Canon rangefinders, Nikon Fs, Hasselblads, Contax and Agfa folders, various obscure collection of East German cameras, like Pentakon 6, Exacta, Praktica, Praktina and many more. It is the result of about 30 or so years of obsessive hoarding, I mean collecting. Don't judge me to harshly, but you would be truly disgusted with my Holga collection. The only Holga missing from it is the 120 3D camera... and some stereo film slide holders. I almost got one recently, but somebody outbid me on eBay for $388.0 US. Can you imagine somebody, other than me, would actually do that - try to make 3D slides with 50 or 100 ISO reversal film on a Holga... and wanted it so bad as to spend that kind of money to get it. I could not sleep for 3 days and there was no "Mountain Dew Flamin Hot" to quell that fire. Speaking of "Flamin Hot", I know, it is a year later, and watching you chugging a bottle of that concoction on the small screen of my computer is surreal... given the fact that both "Flamin Hot" and the Aerochrome are both now discontinued. I think it is a conspiracy... I think it was cheaper for Kodak to pay off Mountain Dew (Pepsico) or maybe even grant them some "special" favors.. than bring back the film. I think they got really worried... You drinking that stuff every day, like you did, could have forced them to actually bring it back... or maybe Monica got in touch with Pepsico and blackmailed them somehow, just to make sure you don't ruin your health.... I don't know... but I do care... about the film. At any rate, thanks again for refueling my passion in photography and my hoarding obsession with camera gear. It is because of you, I found out about Agfa 1535 and summarily got outbid.. again... and again... and again. Those things are ridiculously expensive for what they are... aren't they. Anyway, it has been nice chatting with you. even though you did not say anything of value, actually you did not say anything, not yet. Good luck with the future endeavors, keep producing great content, make sure you have all the vaccinations. I am looking forward to many new videos and grainydays!!!
The original Leica R *cameras* were part of the Minolta partnership, but the R lenses were all Leica's doing. Some of the R lenses were made in Canada (and there's one version of the 35-70 - not yours - which was made by *gasp* Sigma), which is a thing that turns off a lot of Leica cork-sniffers. They're fuggin great, though. And getting stupid expensive.
You continue to inspire with your passion for film photography gear, it looks like you research the hell out of every camera and film before the videos, one can learn something from every video of yours. Also the jokes make me not skip the sponsor segments. Love it, although I must say I am not a huge fan of the new aspect ratio.
How is the focusing working with the Leica R Lense stopped down? Is the lens "closing" mechanism a the same spot? Fokusing lenses with a focusing-prism without a mechanism leaving the lens open until the shutter can be quite painful or even nearly impossible. I was actually thinking a lot about adapting R lenses to an F3. But this kept me from trying it... Absolutely love your videos btw. Became an essential part of my weekend routine. ;)
I recently bought a Nikon FM for $175 at a estate sale, the problem is the light meter doesn't work which is a common thing for these cameras. I'm tired of using my phone for metering and messing up what kind of light meter is the best or most functional, and what should I get?
Every new grainydays video gives me a momentary respite from the horrors of my daily life and gives me a reason to continue living.
I feel this one in my soul but I’ll probably sell that soon for some aerochrome
I couldn't feel more identified with this comment
it’s exact opposite for me
It gives me a reason to continue slowly dying 💕
Man, this video had it all: killer enlarging lens scanning setup, a fridge full of Retrochrome, and setting up the insane expectations of shooting 4x5 Aerochrome! [sweating]
honestly cannot wait for what kind of field work you have planned for your 10 sheets, using a reducing back on the takuhara I assume?
@@xander1052 You bet! Picked one up a fever years back and now a combination of excited and terrified to shoot it.
I read Rectumchrome and am surprised he didn't use this hickup in thr videos.
I'm both incredibly damp at the thought of 4x5 aero film, but also worried Jason will lose his thumbs from his gradual animorph into Chester Cheetah.
5:12 Goodness Jason, the tone difference between your arm and forearm is like those Breaking Bad scenes that take place in Mexico vs the US.
My man's out here doing the Lord's work trying to bring aerochrome back. Be the change you want to see in the world
If he keeps buying old stock of Aerochrome he'll be looking for change in his couch cushions.
I just adapted a 50mm R lens for my Nikon collections month or so ago(Titan included). Loving the results! Love the content!!
I've been using a Minolta 80mm f5.6 C.E. enlarger lens to scan for about the past 6 months and couldn't be happier. Not only is this thing dirt cheap and sharp as a tack, but also constructed to interpret a 2D object on a 2D plane.

If you are scanning with Lightroom Classic, you can actually shoot some kind of correction shot that lets you subtract any kind of vignette your lens might have. Very useful for scanning when stitching.
That 80-200mm is an excellent lens. I just got one and it's amazing.
I had one back in the day and it’s very sharp.

Not relevant to this video but I’ve been shooting my xpan vertically and I highly recommend you doing that with the tx-1 Cheers
Loving these 4:3 uploads lately… fills the screen of an iPad perfectly. Having you been shooting open gate or?
also perfect for crts for those True Analog Vibes
what does “shooting open gate” mean?
@@levinknox basically just using the whole sensor.
Does that mean the video is shot on a medium format sensor?
Loved the square (almost) video aspect ratio! Nice colours in this video too 👌
How can you not like grainydays? Absolutely one of the best.
Greetings from a Canadian slowly cooking to death in south-eastern France.
Great video like always. I really enjoy the 4:3 aspect ratio.7:35 I need a print of that! the composition is dope.

I thought the shots from the forrest and road after 7:30 were appealing to my primal instincts. Also the short hair cut looks good.
Please Kodak end this man's suffering
I just liked the video during the first ad... not because of the ad but because its Thursday and I'm so happy there is a new video to lighten my life
Did the exact same thing! Had a Hassy, sold it, woke up having shit myself, bought another one. Now I’m happy.
I *do* have a passion for screaming from the top of mountains.
I have used enlarger lenses and durst colour copy with a Z6 to scan my negs for while now. Works a treat.

I really love the 17-35mm f/2.8D lens. I have one that I've used on my D700 and on my FE2.

Hello. I'm also looking to get a similar setup as this. I was wondering how the focusing/magnification works with a bellows and enlarger lens. How do you make sure the negative fills the frame and is in focus at the same time? Naked Photographer did a comparison of scanning lenses and the enlarging lens seemed to win. His video gives a good rundown on how to set it all up.

3:00 Look man, I've followed your instructions to the letter here but I'm still not getting it and now my underpants are on back to front.
I'm surprised you bought a second fridge for your film and not a vault for your Aerochrome! ... (can't wait for that vid)
I recently bought a Nikon FM for $175 at a estate sale, the problem is the light meter doesn't work which is a common thing for these cameras. I'm tired of using my phone for metering and messing up what kind of light meter is the best or most functional, and what should I get?
Those X-pan shots looking tasty
Really flipping cool!
No mention on the 16mm film camera yet…?
