My husband and I just booked the Octantis leaving Jan 29, 2023. This has been a bucket list item for my husband for a long time and we are beyond excited. Thank you for all the pre information. I subscribed so I can see all the videos you have on this trip. Thank you for every tip you you posted. Happy cruising.
Thannks so much for watching and subscribing! I'm glad you are enjoying them. I wish you fair winds and following seas on your voyage. You guys are gonna LOVE it!
Hi Jeff, My husband and I are scheduled for Antarctica on Viking Octantis in December. Your video is awesome and so thorough and I'm taking down notes as you speak! Thank you for taking your time to inform future Viking passengers!! Best!
Thank you so much for these! Hopefully all these Covid protocols/restrictions will be over when we go on 1/30/23! We went on our Mediterranean Odyssey re-book in March and I found them them very stressful, even though looking back everything was fine and we had a great trip. The stress leading up to it and sweating out if you would be quarantined was something I could have done without!
Hi Jeff, one of the best Viking Antarctica UA-cam videos I have seen. I have two questions. 1) is the Argentina Sworn Delaration Covid related? 2) did they offer any sort stargazing opportunity, or is it too light? Thank you in advance!
Thanks! So glad you like it. Yes, the declaration is Covid related. No specific stargazing as it was summer and light very late. If you could stay up late enough to stargaze we never made it that long. 😁 Too bad because it would be the darkest of dark skies!
Good job explaining the first day. We used another company and had to learn all you discussed on the fly. The other companies all use the formula for expedition adventures, but Viking probably does it better and the food has to be better than it was on our line.... regardless of who you use (or what they serve for meals), the voyage is what it is all about!!
Thank you for sharing. I am interested to hear about the kayaks and the submarine. Any need to bring - for kayaking? Did Viking provide walking sticks? Thank you!
You're welcome! Kayaking was fun, they are "peddle vs. paddle" kayaks so that was different for us. It's kinda nice since it frees up your hands for photography and also you don't get as wet swinging the paddle up & down with water dripping off. It took just a minute to get used to it. We had brought special neoprene gloves for kayaking but didn't end up using them because they were less cold-weather proof than our "normal" gloves and we didn't think we'd need the water protection without the paddle. It worked out okay so really you don't need to bring anything special for the kayaks. As for the submarines, they looked REALLY cool, sadly they had technical problems with them on our trip and nobody got to go out on them during our cruise. My wife has since heard that the manufacturer of the subs had to recall them due to some problem that effected their whole fleet, not sure if this is true but it seems that the cruise after us didn't use them either. So hopefully Viking works that problem out soon. I know it was something I was really looking forward to. Walking sticks: Yes, Viking did provide hiking sticks when you were on a landing in order to assist with any deep snow or up-hill walking. I hope this helps.
Thank you for the quick response. That sucks about the submarine. Hopefully, they will be working soon. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your adventure. Thank you for sharing and for the helpful information.
We are scheduled for late Nov-Dec and very excited. On the Polaris which is the sister ship of yours. Question, my husband tires easily and can’t do a lot of heavy exercise. He cuts the grass at home and he’s definitely not feeble! How would you describe the degree of exertion needed on the excursions? Are you off the ship for long periods of time? Thank you so much for this series. As you know it’s a large financial investment and we want to make sure we make the most of it. I subscribed!
Hi Jane! The difficulty of the excursions does vary a bit. I suggest you watch the rest of the videos as I try to give you a feel for each one. There are a few with a hike up a slope that are more on the difficult side (Base Brown for example) but no one is forcing you to do the hike. You can always just stay close to the shore and watch the penguins. Most excursions are in the 1.5 to 2 hour range. I don't remember any longer than this. Maybe the kayak went a bit longer including the rib boat portion. As long as your husband is comfortable getting into and out of a rib boat in various conditions (with help always available) he should be fine. You do have to have a doctor's note saying he is in good enough condition for the trip so this is a discussion you will want to have with the Doc as well. Good luck, I think you guys will love it!
