I met Hugh in 2005 when he came to my Jazz Improvisations class at NYU. I love him and his music to this day. I'm Bulgarian, I'm not supposed to feel so connected to it, but still, every time I hear him performing Stimela, I go to pieces. Special. I'm going to miss Hugh Masekela.
Rest in paradise Hugh, your music was legendary and this was my favourite song. Always made me emotional listening to it. You will be missed but your music will forever live on ♥️
I wouldn't have known anything about Hugh Masakela only for a boyfriend of mine in the late 90's. We'd like in bed I. The dark listening to this genius. Unfortunately my ex boyfriend passed away yesterday and I am here drinking a brandy, crying but happy to have experienced Hugh with him Derek this is for you, love Susie
As a 20 year old that lives in this country 🇿🇦, especially in the time we live in, just listening to Ntate Hugh's records make me so proud to be AFRICAN 🌍 He gives me hope to PERSEVERE AND GET MINES. he forever lives.
To me its too emotional because the artists today they all about fame and possession nothing about lifting each other. I use to go to his club In Yeoville to get whipped by him when I was doing something wrong like to be there after hours. What a great man indeed. I miss him...😭😭😭😭
I discovered Hugh Masekela’s music around 1974 with his album “I am not Afraid”. I was blown away by the music; every track was a gem creating these stories within my mind’s eye. The raw emotion that is expressed in this concert version is amazing. I would have loved to see this in a live performance The world lost a master musician at his passing. May your memory be eternal Hugh Masekela! 🙏🙏🙏
A tremendous loss. This song is one of my favorites. Every time I listen to this song, it always touches my soul. I am grateful that Bra Hugh Masekela, a beautiful legend, shared his gifts/talents unselfishly with the world. He is physically gone but he lives on!
I remember hearing this song the first time. I was at a hippie type party at an old farmhouse near misty cliffs Cape town. It blew my mind, like having a religious experience. That moment was when I found out about Bra Hugh. Thanks Mr Masakele. South African Jazz is the most beautiful.
I am jealous of the people who are listening to this masterpiece for the first time. I remember my fist time, it will forever be edged in my memory so much so that I also remember the smell of the environment I was in
I was blessed to see, hear. Hugh Maskela perform on Brown’s Island, Richmond, VA it was Epic! Never forget a brother watching me move to our Beats, asking me was I from my Motherland. My response Yes! Brooklyn, NY! Feeling my Roots thru Rythm!
this music evoke the spirit of African people from different parts of African continent. African people brought in this country whose wealth was robbed and forcefully taken away by White people during the colonial era. African people having nothing in their hands trained to toil in the mines , leaving their love ones back home , parents , families with no one to protect. Flocked in the coal train and their homes in the world of oblivion. Bobby Bucwa
As the world continues to grow and experience changes everyday, there are certain things that will never change. Good music and Legends. Hugh may be gone but his inspiration and music will live on till eternity. "Stimela" May our ancestors and forefathers find Peace....
I'm by no means an emotional man. But, this song...it's presentation...it's meaningful performance just tugs at me. I cannot help but think of the gravity our ancestors endured for the numbers of years they were forced to endured it. Hugh Masekela, thank you, sir, for honoring these brave men through song. May they be blessed mightily. Hugh Masekela, may God rest your soul.
Simply an all-time great musical piece and performance. I have listened to this song in particular, as well as many of his others songs, over and over and over again, and have enjoyed them immensely every time. Long live the music, artistry and sounds of the man, Hugh Masekela.
Rest In Paradise, Brother Hugh Thank You for Helping Us In AMERIKKKA Understand The Common Struggles of Our Brothers and Sisters In AFRIKKKA. A MISTREATED PEOPLE, YET, STILL WE RISE!!!!!!
I took the video from one video, where he was playing at the 'Freedom Beat' festival Clapham Common 28th June 1986, and combined this with the better sound quality of another video.
There is a 16 minute version that was banded in the US around 1990. A Richmond, VA jazz station announced that, this was the "last time" they would play this particular version of "Stimula" because it was band in the USA and asked us to get our devices ready to record it. I did. I let my neighbor borrow it and never heard it again. I have since heard 16 minute versions, but they were "Not" the same. It is a rare live recording..... I awake daily to that song for a full year.... before I loaded it out. I know every note, beat and inflections. I would love to hear it again.
That explains why the video editing is out of sync with what's actually happening. For instance, the opening instrumental is a saxophone solo, then Hugh on trumpet - that's not on this video. Also when he's singing it's clear it's not on this version of the song. It's good hear anyhow :)
Bro... if you are a human amd this song does not evoke your emotions there is something wrong with you. I had the record and koced the song for a long time before I understood its meaning. Serious stuff.
If u gave a thumbs down you are seriously trippin this man is what we all should be striving to be as musicians. I love I've lovedhim from childhood till now
Oh this legend!!! rest in peace this song reminds during my younger days. Coming back from school while waiting for my parents to return from work listening to the radio

1. This song as an African touches the depth of my soul. I could just weep

Music is art and a diary. I feel this man. He is able to relate
If you are a Black African and this song does not evoke your emotions, then there is something seriously wrong with you.

For me it invokes the unbearable images I saw at the Workers Museum, Johannesburg.
Being part Basque and Marconi it moves every part of my being
This black man from Detroit is definitely moved.
YOU CAN FEEL THE SADNESS IN ALL INSTRUMENTS.
