    Valuable exercise for both learning to find the mask or re-establishing it when it goes astray - as can happen when one gets careless. It also seems a good warm up before the warm up on those days when the voice is recalcitrant or just doesn't want to sing.

    I am grateful that this exists because.. I guess that singers are often rather emotional people which makes one perhaps vulnerable against cold hearted bullies (too much emotion can overwhelm when trying to be assertive ) Being able to sing well boosts confidence which makes one stronger. The control over the voice and breath could help too.

      If you have too much overwhelming emotion, that might mean you have been traumatized or hurt to the extent that you might benefit from therapy or a social worker for you to be heard by an empathetic professional. Freud said, "Are you depressed or surrounded by envious and toxic people?"

      @@musicbrazilian7065 There could be more or less subtle bullying going on in almost any workplace. This is caused by our hard neoliberal/social darwinism ideology according to a prof psychology here, Paul Verhaeghe.
      He also feels we have all these "disorders" now because of this.
      But there is also a trend, where the chef is a coach who is there to help you develop. (like Jeff ;-) ??)

    This is one of those moments when I have to use that word again - AMAZING. So working with your video from a few years ago, and then moving straight to this one, I know just what you are saying, and I also noticed a greater enunciation when I sang the last section, with the set of three vowels. I didn't try to enunciate more, it just happened. Wonderful training here Jeff - I am so grateful for this.

    It was fun, thanks again Jeff! I don't really know about the 'mask' , but I think I understand what it is supposed to feel. It feels like my voice is focusing on the front part of my mouth with a greater volume.

    Great lesson Jeff! Thanks! I'm a true bass trying to get more melody into my voice by trying to speak in my mask. It's quite a struggle but it's worth it! Improved my projection and is less taxing on the vocal cords.

    Oop I’m having trouble articulating clean zings so fast, I wonder how powerful and resonant they’re gonna be by the time my tongue has released enough to hit those zings quickly

    Hello and thank you for this exercise, exatly what I needed!
    can you please focus more on this range and this placement ( above the break till C5 ) with more melodic and staccato exercises ?
    and how can I find such videos and exercises if you already have them ?
    THANK YOU, you are the best here

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому +1

      Hello and thanks for your comment! Depends on what fach you mean. Nearly all the soprano and mezzo videos go into that range. Tenors will be in that range if you search for titles with 'extended range' in them. Happy to do more of them too!
      Thank you!
      Jeff

    Hey Jeff when you are belting is the mask response a good place to aim at? I ask this because you did a video with Freya Casey on passage exercises and one of the last exercises was on a nay, after doing that my high range opened up bit then I started belting in my mask and it helped out a lot. Just wanted to answer to this question thanks.

    a challenging exercise for me (soprano) am I right in that working the zing is not a 'pretty' sound? any hints as to how to phonate the 'z' as quickly as you play it?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, not a pretty sound. I think I say that in the video! Be lighter with your tongue, it will go more quickly.
      Best!

    Where else can you hear the word thrice out side of Shakespeare ???

  • @pinesyeet

    Question: If I really push hard for it, I can make a noise around B5-C6 ish as a baritone (I think). Is it normally possible to learn to hit notes anywhere near there as a baritone in any register except whistle? Or are these notes just squeaks or noises that can't really be used in any way? For reference: Untrained I have a range of about F#2 to somewhere just above C5.
    As always, great video!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for watching! Hard to really say. The thing about singing is that in general, we need to be able to create the sounds consistently on demand. That being said, baritones can have quite prodigious ranges if they learn to manage their registers properly.
      All the best!
      Jeff

    how to keep the jaw from jumping up and down on the fast zings

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 роки тому

      It doesn't really matter if that happens or not in this particular exercise. The sound and resonance is what we're focusing on here. Moving the jaw that much may even release some TMJ engagement!
      Best,
      Jeff
