DUKE & EARL GET A PEDICURE! // New Rain Gutters for the Barn & Spring Plowing!!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 тра 2023
- Today Duke & Earl are getting a pedicure!! Our Amish neighbor, Andy, is here to help with the colts' hooves and getting them ready for a summer in the pasture! After that, we are putting up new rain gutters for the barn to keep the barnyard more dry this summer. Then, we head out with Baron & Ken to do some spring plowing!!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Brenda is so good at filming we all owe it to Brenda for being so awsome at filming
Good to see The videographer back.
Andy seems to really enjoy what he does, as much as how good he is at his job and with the horses!! You are so fortunate, Jim and Brenda, to live in the community you do
Yes, we are, we love where we live
I grew up in Allegany County, which is about 90 miles south of Rochester, and sometime in the early 80s, several Amish families moved into the northern part of that county from Pennsylvania. Many of the old farmers in that area were against having Amish move into the county because of old stereotypes about the Amish taking over the land, and many thought Amish don't pay taxes, etc. But Amish pay their share of taxes no different than non-Amish do. It took nearly a decade for the Amish to be accepted as good neighbors and many non-Amish doing business with the Amish, horse farriering, building homes, roofing, barn raisings, etc. They're good people, hard workers, and very honest dealing. Every year, on opening day of Bass season, I drive down to Allegany County to fish in Allen Lake and many Amish will be there fishing as well, and I enjoy visiting with them, and one Amish gentleman, will bring me a homemade apple pie that his wife made. The best pie ever. I wish people would stop with the stereotypes of other races and cultures. It's so disgusting.
What brought on the tirade?
@@ChrisLascari Racism & bigotry!
@@r.f.richardsonjr5691...I didn't see any of that on this channel
@mervjb I didn't suggest, nor infer, that happened on Jim & Ms. Brenda's channel. As I said, this occurred back in the early 80s, in a different part of NY.
... and I'd bet that the Amish might have kept alive good horsemanship knowledge.
I am so happy that UA-cam was invented! I learn something new everyday day. I am sitting on my couch in Fort Lauderdale, FL on a sunny day with the air conditioner running vicariously watching Jim plow. My grandfather was born on a reservation in OK and moved his family to GA. I can remember him shoeing our horses. Of course the horses were much smaller and not built to pull a plow. Jim is a good teacher and explains what he is doing well. The photographer does a great job. Maybe one day she will get a drone so she can incorporate aerial shots. Thank you guys for providing these teaching videos!!!
Hello dear friend , hope everything is going well with you?
Kudos to the camera lady on the plowing. Really well done with the changing angles; rear, side and front.
😊
I live within only a few miles of Mr. Gordon's farm and sawmill and so love following your videos and learning different aspects that I have no knowledge of. I love seeing how Baron is growing and learning. Andy seems like such a great guy.
I realize there is only so much time in the day, but I would love to see you do some repair to your Barn, painting it and beautifying your farm.
Yes, we would love that too
Such good horses!
Nice to see Brenda back. I just think you are so good at filming, Brenda that I love the views you can get when Jim is plowing and I find your pacing of the video and editing just makes it enjoyable to put my feet up and take a break.
Nice to see you back, Miss brenda, and congratulations on that new grand baby. The flower gardens coming along. Can't wait to see the picnic table once you get it done. Andy is a great help to you. Thanks for sharing the adventures.
Boy Duke and Earl are really getting big and beautiful!!
Love these videos. I watch them all day.
Looks like you have a great day for plowing The young fella is doing a great job. That is partly due to the old fella he’s next to. Thank you for the video. God Bless
Another outstanding education about plowing and the furrows!
Andy is super fast. I would definitely throw my business to Andy's Super Trim. Self-sufficiency is a demand of any Amish man. Andy displays that quality well. Jim has a great neighbor. I would love to see Andy's horses sometime.
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Those are some deluxe looking rain gutters!
What's up Jim . Nice new horse
Love you both
It's nice to have you back brenda
Jim how is your friend from Pennsylvania doing that had the wreck? Still praying for them, I know that was very hard one them, also know you were looking forward to having the horse for work this summer! God bless all, and hope they are doing okay!
That was such a tragedy losing a great draft horse like that. Really sad. I also hope Jim's friend and his wife are still doing well from that accident. I know it was heartbreaking for them having to put down Luke (Percheron) for a broken back as a result of the accident.
It was fun to watch the colts at the very end: Hey guys, whatcha doin?!? Can we play too?
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Great video guys, glad all is well with the new addition to the family and Brenda's safe return.
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
You could make a overflow drain on the water tank and dig in some drain tile and get the water down the pasture a ways.
Congratulations to your new grandchild❤!
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Andy is a great worker! he is young and strong! Brenda glad you're back and congratulations on the new baby girl!
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
I really wonder sometimes what Duke and Earl are saying to one another when they see their buddies working. Are they teasing them? Are they champing at their buts ready to work themselves? They just look SO CURIOUS though! Comical!
Welcome back Brenda! We missed you!
So with your horses Jim, is easy to gauge a straight furrow..by keeping the wheel of the plow. Moving strait in the furrow . Or is it all depending on your horse on the left side…
Putting baron in the furrel good way to teach him to pull straight good job
Lady looks good and so do the colts
Hello from Thailand, love your horse family and videos.
thanks for sharing
Good to see you back Brenda and I can hardly wait to see you finish your picnic table. Love to see Andy helping you out Jim. You have a great neighbor. God bless and enjoy your restful evening time..
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
I am guessing Lady’s foal will arrive on the 5 June at 8.23pm for no other reason than it’s my husband’s birthday! Nice to see Brenda back, congratulations on the arrival of your new grandchild. Interesting video as always!
good reason it is also my sons birthday but 630 pm lol
@@karenhood6135 wouldn’t that be a wonderful birthday present for them!
Nice plowing job😊
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Enjoying all your videos 🙋♂️🐈🐈
I have a large roof like that on my house and garage, with sometimes 2+ feet of snow load, and have never had a problem as far as the gutters go in the 20 years since they were installed. The snow slides right off on a continuation of the slope of the roof and shoots right out over the top of the gutters. A real heavy rain will overshoot the gutters as well.
Thanks for sharing
Your horse pedicure is our trim. Then we have a shift, which is remove, trim, reset the same shoes. Every second shoeing they might need new shoes, maybe those big pulling shoes last a lot longer, get a few shifts out of them. The most costly part of horse keeping.
I can hear the swallows are all excited about spring too, time to build.
Greetings from Australia.
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Welcome home Brenda! ..glad you're back..( you are much better at filming than Jim)..shhh..don't tell him I said that😊..he did well considering all he had to juggle..I have no problem with Amish..I give them as much work as I can a d usually shop in their businesses before I go elsewhere..please thank Andy for the awesome work on the babies' hooves and for not shying away from the camera..just as in any culture there are good people with a few sour apples thrown in..but all in all most are extremely good people..as always prayers and blessings
Andy is a very skilled farrior! You are fortunate to have him work on your horses.
The view of your field when Jim was heading out to commence plowing was absolutely stunning. You folks live in such a beautiful place!
The boys are nosy an lady said been there done that ❤❤ from TEXAS
i love to see broke ground
you do a great job jim
Great video as always. Baron is really doing a great job . It's amazing how much he is learning.
Considering that was his first time in the stocks getting his feet done he did amazing. Little fighting it at first but he settled nicely.
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Andy 50 years later,,,,,, teaching some young guys how to trim hooves. Jim taught me to use "stocks". It saved my back back then!
Hey Brenda!!! It's so good to see you back home!🥰 It's so cute seeing Duke and Earl at the fence line watching you plow! It looked like Baron did a good job plowing today with Kenny. Whether doing field work or logging, which of those jobs do you think Baron is doing the best at this point of his training? Since Buck's passing and Lady being on "maternity leave", it seems like Baron is catching on fast doing the various jobs!!!! I'm enjoying watching him progress as I've never gotten to see a draft horse being trained.
Hello from Washington State! Can’t wait to see Lady’s new baby. My guess is May 31st 7am.
Watching a plow turn the soil is very satisfying.👍👍
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Earl is funny....he likes to leave his butt hanging out - in his stall - in the stocks. Seems like he's testing you !
Earl has some really good looking feet with some amazing frogs. Actually, both colts have really good feet. Earl did really well in the stocks. How tall are they getting to be now? About 16 hands? Wow, Baron is being able to be hitched without being tied now? Great job! He wasn't perfect, but for as young and green as he is, he did really well. The change I really notice in Baron is that he looks like he is starting to enjoy his work. He is starting to muscle up and be able to keep up. I think Kenny being slow makes it a bit easier on him, since he's shorter. I think Kenny is more of a leader than Bill, and that makes Baron more confident. I also think he is starting to understand what is expected of him and be comfortable with it. He seems happier in the furrow, surprisingly, maybe because he has a clear line to follow. I really notice how he is carrying his head and his ears, which is what I associate with a horse being content and happy with what he is doing. If he could whistle, he'd ben whistling while he works.
With training oxen, I got then used to having their feet lifted and held held before they were completely weaned. Teaching them at a young age is best. You can't train an old dog new tricks.
They need their feet inspected often.
If you go to we’re they sell items for roofing they should have things to help keep the snow from sliding off ask about it tell them what you want them for Jim l called my son years ago he worked on roofs he said what the things that keep the snow from falling off the roof is called snow birds you can also with a long roof get what is called snow boards god bless you and your beautiful wife
Thank you Jim Brenda and Andy. Those hoofs look so good I should trim my own toe nails.😂😂😂❤
Those 2 are getting so dam big their gorgious red fur
Thank You for your videos. Great to see the colts get the pedicure! 😀😀 Back in the saddle. Nice to see you back, Miss Brenda, and congratulations on that new grandbaby. The flower gardens coming along. Can't wait to see the picnic table once you get it done. Andy is a great help to you. Learning a lot about plowing. Jim thank you for all the details you put into it. People can learn from good and bad. Baron is getting a good education. Like Brenda said surprisingly he has very good self-discipline. Quick learner.
When we were kids we had "license plates" on our bicycles. Would love to see them on the horses/harnesses to tell who is who from their back ends!
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
The draft horses I used to raise and train a little kid could pick up their feet and hold them. I took the time to properly train them and did not need any kind of stocks.
Thanks for sharing love your videos
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?😊
I've nevah shawed a hoof. I was lead to think the frog was fragile. How do ya know how much to trim off?.😅 Earl n Duke where so good. I like your stocks. Every barn should hv one 😂 ty for teaching us more all about th pedi's😅 kitties aren't meowing.😊 You must b petting them more😊 ty Bren for filming.❤ Hope your gutter works gr8. God bless you and your barn of babys😅
Great info and explanations as always! Love being a pert of this
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Great video! We missed you Brenda. Congratulations on new grand baby!
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
The colts were really curious and Lady could have cared less. She’ll have her hands full soon with labor and a foul. I hope it’s a filly.
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Welcome Home Brenda :) We missed you, Jim did great while you were gone :) Sure hope those gutters do the trick. Praying all goes well for Lady!!!
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Those gutters look great, but they seem to be to low. I don't see them catching moderate to heavy rain. I could be wrong.
It'd be interesting to see how farrier tools are made and sharpened. The dirt and mud has to be hard on them.
excellent ! great day, great job and great filming...spring has sprung.
welcome home brenda good to see you hope you got lots of baby snuggles with the wee one tell andy i said thank you for being a big help to jim he doesnt look that old but he sure does seem to no what he is doing with those horses and doesnt take all day good video thank you
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
this is so interesting
I built a set of stocks just like yours about 15-20 years ago and ended up having to sell them when my parents sold the farm. I just ordered the tubular steel to weld up a new set of stocks based on my own design with adjustable hoof rests which will hopefully improve user friendliness when it comes to working. For the barn gutters, I'd suggest using white oak and incorporating it into a new fascia board, what you are essentially fabricating is a wooden water trough and screwing it into the rafter tails, then using sheet metal strapping to strap it to the roof through the sheeting every 24 inches, this will help the sheets of snow slide off over the edge without ripping off the trough. Use heavy deck screws or grk screws to prefab the trough sections. You should get 20 years out of the oak. Flimsy aluminum won't last 2 years if it comes off one snowy day when 10 tons comes hurtling down at once. If I lived near you I'd be glad to build a test section to demonstrate lol
I don't think after 48 years I'd ever get used to rolling a furrow over the wrong way to the left side, just a mental block
Nice to see you back on the farm, hope you got a lot of grandmother time in with the youngsters. 🎅🏻
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Jim im so jealous of you not by what you have and by what you do but that you have a perfect woman! Who sees your vision of the world and she supports you in that journey and im not down grading her in any way because i know washout her you wouldn't be the same man!
Love seeing all you have to do on your working homestead. Blessings
Good move!
Wait till the cute gal is back so the boys behave better 😊
My guess is May 24th, 4:30 pm, Barry from Pa. Congratulations on your new grandchild what a blessing they are, was so sorry to here about the loss of your friends horse, what a tragedy
Welcome back Brenda! Great video folks!😊
Hi Jim, Brenda, Great to be on your farm again. Brenda so nice to see you are home. God Bless, your new granddauther. Jim, i enjoyed watching Duke, And Earl get there Feet cleaned up. And the new gutters look great. Great Video, Stay Safe ..Jim, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Hi James!
First of all I know very little about horses. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen the underside of a horse hoof. The way y’all dig in the hoof looks like it would hurt the horse, but I know you and Brenda love your horses, so I know you wouldn’t hurt them. Did that young man go to school to learn his trade? He surely makes quick work of it.😊❤
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
So, good to see you back Ms. Brenda,,man this video was packed full. ..Jim did pretty good with the filming and moderating while you were gone..Congrats to you all on new baby. lov from south alabama..tell Andy a big hello from alabama.
Maybe you need a little more down draft on the plow shear
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Great video !
BTW, Welcome back Ms. Brenda 👍
Looks like fun plowing
We have Mennonites here and they are good business people. I like to do business with them.
Master teamster!!
Between storms, especially during the summer, lots of bacteria flourish on the roof thanks to bird droppings. I could be wrong here, but I don't think that using runoff directly from the roof to water the horses is a good idea.
Welcome home Brenda
Jim, it would of been a good opportunity to turn your livestock into the new to be corn field while it was too wet to plow. Just thinking I might have done that.
❤😊
Hello 👋 how are you doing…….?
That furrow looks so perfectly straight, wow. Where your ground got too much compressed you might consider planting alfalfa. Its roots decompress the ground. Wishing you all a wonderful evening! 😊-Chris
You too!
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
If not too late I guess 5/23/23 @ 0230 hours Don Doucette in Ma.

Hello 👋 how are you doing…….?

Hello..good to see the young ones in the stocks..will help teach them discipline...ooppps are we allowed to use the D word? Jim I dont know the situation with your water supply... why dont you put in a water tank to collect the rain water off the roof?? Being here in Australia..I see that as such a waste...
Andy is so young, how did he learn how to do so many jobs ?
Hello dear friend ,how are you doing…..?
Welcome home Brenda!! Congratulations on your new grandbaby. What keeps the horses in the pasture? The wire is very low.
Thanks. The fence is all they need
Isn't there an adjustment for the Trash Boards so they peel off the top inch and put it in the bottom of the furrow ?
They seem to be adjusted to high off the moldboards.
The use of stocks saves your back and legs. I don't like supporting the hoof especially while filing.
