The greatest snooker match ever ! As a 11yr kid watching this one & stayed up late witnessing the greatest break from Alex to stay in the match with that epic saving break in the 30th frame. Alex Higgins i totally idolised & it use to hurt like hell when he got beat & didn"t win more major tournaments, the greatest natural gifted player on a snooker table, a entertainer & legend of the green baize. And with the thanks of UA-cam & yourself to screen classic footage of Alex Higgins is a sheer joy . Thank YOU !
i`ve downloaded this video a few years ago and watched countless times. still feels like i`m watching this super entertaining & breath taking match...! missing you in this era #AlexHiggins...!
I disagree. I thought the pots were great but the actual positioning was shockingly bad. He was out of position frequently. Even played a poor snooker to let White in again.. Anyone else wouldve cleared up from that. If you look at the head to head against jimmy, jimmy won 10 to alexs 4. And most of alex head to heads against top players were similiar. Higgins played too many exhibition type shots in his career to please the crowd and lost many matches because of it
Forget all the 147's. This is the greatest break ever made. It also contains the best shot ever played - the blue into the green pocket. Unless you know about real pressure on a snooker table you wont fully appreciate this.
The most exciting match ever from the two most exciting players. The speed of their potting and the incredible shots that looked impossibe from different angles. Often, it looked as though Alex or Jimmy was playing a safety shot, only for a red to be rifled into the top pocket at lightning speed. A red, about two feet from the top pocket would be potted at great speed, and the white screwed up the table to be in position for the black. I will never forget the excitement of watching it.
I've never forgotten this match. I remember being at boarding School and we were due to go home that Friday. I so wanted Jimmy to win. I was lying in bed late at night watching the highlights on a black & white telly with a fuzzy picture. I was left gobsmacked after Alex pulled off this break, and heartbroken when Jimmy went on to lose. I'm not a believer in fate but this one frame seemed to determine how Jimmy's career would go. Especially at the crucible theatre. So near but yet so far. He has to be content with the fact that he was the best player never to have won the world title....
Yes it was the first of many chokes for White. He would surely have beaten Reardon in the final too. Don't forget this was only a week or so after his twentieth birthday. He could have been the youngest ever World Champion, a record which would still have stood today. Even Hendry had to wait until he was twenty-one...
The best break in snooker history, so much out of position with a lot of the shots but the hurricane kept his nerve, top respect for him even though he had his demons, class pure class
Without a doubt the most impressive televised break ever made. Every one of those shots was played under intense pressure and the first few shots were all very difficult.
What, when jimmy put the first red commentator wasn't happy and when he missed he showed he's support for higgins . Today's commentators can tell exactly what shot the players going for . One thing I like about back then is . You can smoke at least when your favourite player is losing....
Jimmy White had a touch of the Ronnie Osullivan's about him flying around the snooker table like that lol, he was a great player when he was playing Jimmy White, shame he never Won a World Championship when he was playing, but what a come back by Alex Higgins under pressure and a frame down I bet Jimmy was cursing that red not dropping in that cost him the match. I remember as a child watching Alex playing snooker on the television in shock at him smoking and drinking as he was on the television lol. Alex Higgin's alway's reminded me of Mick Jagger aswell with his manarizims lol. What a great player Hurrican Higgin's was. God Rest Your Soul Alex Higgin's Amen, bless you Alex when you pulled Jimmy in for a hug at the end of the match you legend xxx
Most of the top 16 of back then up to 1993 (which still consisted of most of ths oldies of the 1980's) would have done well to be in the world's top 50 today. Thorne and Meo would only have been top 70 to 80 today the way they were playing way back then.
At 9:16 that moment right there summed Alex up, in one picture.... The smile after that black, even me as a "crap" snooker player can relate with that. U love something so much that when you achieve just a great shot, it warms the heart. Alex Higgins is snooker he showed the world how it should be played, With flair, bravery, enjoyment, and a smile.... I met him once, an it's the only time I've been star struck..... Genius 👏👏👏👍
I maybe wrong, and yes Ronnie osulivan has provided us with snooker of a different dimension, but i don't think anyone who has ever held a snooker cue could of made that break that Alex Higgins made against Jimmy White in that fantastic world semi in 1982, truly magnificent
Elton John Tribute Dean Torkington yeah I was 21 that year , best world champs ever, as well as Knowles beating Davis thorne beat Griffith's and white took out thorne opening it up for Alex
That's because the players had real, individual characters, and you saw who they really were. There was freedom- you could smoke, drink, look at nice girls, be your true self. So much more freedom. That's why it was enjoyable.
i am a fan of Higgins careless attempts that went like perfection, but when i saw jimmy so eager to handshake. He is definetely a champ again, though may not have won much titles
Chaotic genius, all over the place! That describes that 69 break and the man himself. Incredible! He didn't get into position until half way through the break! A coach would wince at Alex's cue action, but when that final stroke of the cue makes contact with the cue ball the result is often magical.
Well there were only 5 players in history (Joe Davis, Fred Davis, John Pulman, Ray Reardon, John Spencer) who had won the world title more than Alex at the time he was playing, so I don't think there were many people qualified to coach him!
@@JohnSmith-su3ze I don't think Alex would have let himself be coached and there's always the thought that would trying to change anything he did have taken away the magical genius of the man? Pure snooker talent.
Higgins was such a charismatic player. I just love watching him, even just his mannerisms when he's not at the table. Seems like he might've been a rock star in another life.
A bigger crowd puller than Ronnie and jimmy combined. They don't make films about snooker players because a lot of people think they play a lot of boring snooker. They made a film about alex because he was the most exciting player to ever hold a cue.The hurricane xxxx
It was always the key shot that Jimmy always missed. That red on a lead of 59 was what cost him a place in the final. Makes you wonder where Jimmy’s career would’ve gone but for that.
Obviously taking nothing away from the genius of Alex I honestly feel that if Jimmy hadn't broken down on 41 he probably would've gone on to become World champion that year. A bit like when he bottled it on the black on 17 all against Hendry years later. Crucial errors meant everything!
No doubt a great break under extreme conditions. However, for me this personifies the hurricane. Never able to completely control the cue ball, but had the courage, audacity, and skill to knock in very difficult shots. No matter how good one is, you cannot sustain that kind of play. That was his appeal.
I hate seeing comments about Jimmy having no bottle. In fact he loads but he lacked concentration, that was his only weakness. Alex on the other hand, had everything. People go on about how he didn't make a lot of centuries or win as many tournaments as Ronnie, Davis or Hendry but that's because Alex loved to entertain. Once the frame was won he'd put on a show for his fans, sometimes even when the frame wasn't he'd be playing outrageous exhibition shots. For me, Alex Higgins was the greatest player I've ever seen.
My 2 favourite player's of the 1980s. They were both box office and we're responsible for making snooker attractive and brought in good sponsor's and high prize money. Player's of today should be thankful to Alex and Jimmy for making snooker what it is today.
Best snooker match in history, probably. Two aggressive but highly creative masters of the table and cue. I'm reading Tony Francis' book on Hurricane and it runs the gamut of emotions. Higgins was a one-off that's for sure! Rock on Sandy...
Alex. Wonderful player. Sober a good. Pissed a good player definitely the people's champion. I watched snooker because of Alex Higgins. I watch snooker now because of Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Wow what a frame of snooker. I'd forgotten how good Alex could be. There's something missing from today's snooker that was there in the early to mid 80's. Not sure quite what it is. Its not just me and my rose tinted spectacles is it?
Characters. That's whats missing. Today's sportsmen have to be good on the media and unfortunately they are so good on the media, all their foibles and rough edges have been smoothed out.
Sessions them two will of had are legendary. I've read jimmys book he may not have won an world but he's lived and had plenty of fun. Two all time greats rip the hurricane 💜
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy... Some easy shots, those. Looks as if he was resigned for defeat. Jimmy's biggest downfall was closing the deal. Alex sure thrived under the pressure.
I saw Alex, my snooker hero, at the Crucible that year, but, sadly, it wasn't this match. I'm biased, but I honestly believe that's the greatest break of all time

One of the greatest matches I've ever seen. I was 11 yrs old then.
The best break in snooker history? The shots, the pressure, 0-69 14-15 in frames. Its hard to argue against this.
Maybe but his technique was so strange, he plays like a drunk on the shots.
0-59

He's a bottler missed a simple red with the rest. Was ahead in a few of his matches with hendry and bottled them too including a black on the spot
I think he played too quick some time they causes him to lose the game...
I agree

I think reardon experience would have got the better of Jimmy. Alex beat him but he'd been pro ten years by this time
Alex just had such a unique aura about him. Totally magnetic and magic to watch.
27:52 What a truly beautiful moment. You can tell Alex loved Jimmy to bits. This really made me tear up
came here to say the same thing :')
Thinking just that. Humble from Jimmy and love from Alex.
Along with Ronnie, the masters of the beautiful game. Rest in peace Alex. Thank you for the memories. We salute you.

What feels sweet about good old days is that the commentary back then concentrated more on the game rather than the player.

I am sorry, but you are disrespecting THE ACTUAL THE MOST EXCITING PLAYER, Ronnie.
Mark Edwards I’m not so sure I agree with that. Ronnie O’Sullivan is more popular in China than Ding Junhui. And it’s Ding’s homeland.
Danny Doyle That is just totally wrong ! Ron has 5 trillion fans in China and Ding has 6 trillion! You are just incorrect in your assumption!!!

That clearance in frame 30 by Alex was ridiculous. Has to go down as one of the best ever clearances if not the best.
that red, into the right middle, with maximum backspin to land on the black to win the frame and match is terribly underrated, 25:20

With one of the greatest clearances ever !!!
That blue!! Ffs Mark Selby would never have taken that on under the same circumstances. Never. There's only one Alex Higgins.
It was a great unusual shot. As for Selby he is an attacking player who rarely turns down any half chance. You clearly know very little about snooker.
The greatest 15 minutes in the history of snooker.
A full house ,a drink and a smoke ,and Alex Higgins.the good old days 👍
That blue into
the top right hand pocket omg. Ppl av tried recreating that shot and cant do it. The amount of side an screw on the white was unreal.
