I imagine that was because when they first started touring as a small band they were playing small clubs and bars where the audience was right there able to fall onto his pedals or some drunk reach out and dick with his shit. The first time I saw TON was in a small club when they first toured for Bloody Kisses and his head was literally a couple of inches from the ceiling, haha. He was playing a couple of feet away on a small stage directly in front of me. At the end of their show he pulled all of the strings off of his bass by hand like a fucking barbarian and tossed them out to people. I was one of the people that got one and I still have it.

Depends on the era, but it's mostly steel rounds with varying levels of tube preamp overdrive and a just enough compression to even things out. Boost your lowest frequencies, cut the low mids a little, boost the high mids a little and the treble just enough to make chords shine. Dude dabbles in all kinds of effects, but you can get the basic sounds from a number of amps and preamp pedals, more easily using one with bi-amped or blendable distortion.

Steele had tweeters in his bass cabinets, he was creating ring modulation, this is a huge part of his tone that everyone who makes videos like these misses usually entirely, Steele was basically doing the drum & bass reece bass thing with a bass guitar (for those that actually know how the real reece was created on the Casio CZ, it wasn't two saw waves detuned slightly, and it wasn't detuned at all, it was wavefolding phase distortion because the synth didn't have filters, so as the wave folded back on itself to create modulation, ring modulation would occur as a result on the reece bass), this is also why Steeles bass tone was very high end and midrange heavy, the tweeters along with the BOSS Chorus gave him a lot of his signature sound with the DS-1 Distortion.

In order to get his tone correctly you need to get a bass that’s 15% larger than the average size. There’s a bar in Brooklyn that Peter frequently went to, and they have his green and black bass on display. It’s enormous. The bar is called Duffs btw

Peter had some really unique and interesting bass lines throughout his career not all of which were distorted...he also had this nice smooth almost upright tone with some sort of tapewounds...besides being one of the biggest writers in type o negative and having this ultimate low voice and still being able to hit the high registers pretty effortlessly...well...he was the epithome of bass...hence why people went mad over this...yet he is often overlooked somehow...but seriously...some killer lines and the use of powerchords and octaves...and a very unique sonic quality to the whole band...good job mate, nailed it...i only have to add..his bass and kenny hickey's guitar had "sustainiac" pickup which could make their notes ring indefinitely creating those low drones band is known for
