In the army I never questioned about the grains in our rounds because we got what we were given. Now in my AR I have a 1:8 twist and have been using 55 grain rounds. Your video made me do research and realize that heavier rounds will be so much better

TacticalHeathen556 But like you said though shoot with multiple grains so you know how they react in your weapon. In an 5.56 with a 14.5 inch barrel and a 7 twist I shoot everything from a 55 to 77 grain round.

@@ciri1993 and with some marksmanship training you can get good hits on the E target out to about 600 meters with as issued Matech or BDC detachable carry handle sight shooting Mk262. An ACOG will permit good results at 600 too when operator is cognizant of need for a consistent eyeball to eyepiece relationship, In other words, in prevailing wind with correct favor, you could realize about 2MOA at 600 meters from an M4 shooting the 77. Also, the 77 takes a wind constant of 10 at 600 which makes calculation of MOA wind formula really easy: for example a full value 10 mph crosswind at 600 meter target distance, 600 divided by 100 times 10 divided by constant equals 6 MOA sight adjustment or 18 inches of favor. The bottom line is just shoot 77's.

I imagine it can even be used throughout a single “mission.” Having an AR with short barrel on the move, finding your spot, planting, and switching to an 18-20” upper for longer targets (having had that other upper in your Ruck the whole time). My 16” barrel is 1-7 optimized for slinging the XM855 green tip and my 8.5” barrel is a .300blackout running Hornady Black for full load and what ever 200gr bullet loads for subsonic I can find. If I reload my own subsonic I’ll typically use a 200grain projectiles with 3/4 of the normal powder load.... with .300 blackout you can still get a really good amount of lethal ballistics in CQB with that reduced subsonic and make it even quieter... while also having a mag loaded up for longer ranges even in the 8.5”. A full hypersonic load out of the 8.5” will still deliver good accuracy out to 300m. That’s why I have been experimenting with the Dolos tack down system. I have a second upper in 5.56 in 1-7 twist and a .300blackout I can fast change in my pistol lower. However I have found that a red dot has real limitations at 100+ yards... so I’ve been thinking about just carrying a complete 5.56 upper with a 1-6 scope as well.

Doug Carter honestly, the gun is pretty straight forward. People make stuff up all the time about ARs... but my one piece of advice for maintaining an AR is get some CLP, a small nylon scrub brush and a good lubricant. In a pinch motor oil can even work. I’ve used everything from grease and wax remover to non-chlorinated break parts cleaner to clean the funk and the WD40 to motor oil to lube. But best case is CLP, small nylon brush, bore snake, and then some lube if choice. Lol they say weapon of opportunity... but I say lube if opportunity. Just try to stay away from lithium lube or grease as they can sometimes hang up the action.

Hey y'all, remember...what works for this guy, may not work for you. Cool thing about an ar-15 platform is that every single thing on them is completely customizable. One thing i noticed he didn't really hit on, is the importance of the components. As in, bcg, barrel and trigger set up. Those are the 3 most important things, that you shouldn't go cheap on. I use a nickel boron bcg, simply because it's crazy easy to clean. I use a cmc 3.5lb trigger, because it is awesome and works. Barrel, there are plenty good barrels, just look to see if you can grab one with a dimple for your gas block, makes things easier, prevents rotation and makes your gas block much more secure.

I agree with most of what you put out here. I’m not a big fan of that particular sling just because I found the dangling tab prone to snagging. I prefer the Haley Strategic D3 because it gives me the same adjustability without a strap dangling. Considering we both did that Airborne thing, I’m sure you understand my point. Secondly, twist rate is absolutely something important to consider; however, extra rotations within the barrel don’t necessarily equate to less yaw from the projectile. Projectiles don’t even necessarily need to make a full rotation inside of the barrel to have the same twist rate through the air. However, less velocity reduces the actual rpm the projectile spins. The math and mechanics actually work something like this: a 1 twist in 6” barrel causes the projectile to rotate once every 6” it travels. The same is true with 1:7”, 1:8”, etc.; however, we’ll use 1:6” for easier math because 6” is half a foot. A projectile traveling at 2300 feet per second with a 1:6” twist rotates twice per foot which becomes 4600 revolutions per second. If you propel that same projectile at 3000 feet per second at 1:6” twist rate, it spins at 6000 revolutions per second. It is actually the extra velocity that creates more gyroscopic stability. The projectile actually mechanically locks in the lands and grooves of the bore within the first couple of inches of rifling. This is evidenced by the striations on recovered intact projectiles after firing. So, while you have the effect right, the actual cause you gave is not. It’s also not entirely correct to say that heavier projectiles more revolutions per second to stabilize either though. It is actually the projectile length that is more important to consider. Heavier projectiles are typically longer; however, if you start looking at pure copper or brass projectiles or ones with a different shape compared to a traditional copper jacketed lead core spitzer projectile, it becomes more important to look at the projectile length than just the weight. I hope you don’t take any of that as an insult of any type as I only intend to clear up some misconceptions that are out there. Keep putting out great content. I’m just now being introduced to your channel after the video you put out with Shawn Ryan of Vigilance Elite.

I'm just gonna have a pretty basic AR. 1:7 or 1:8 twist 20" chrome lined barrel chambered in 5.56 with a FSB, Midwest Ind Drop-in quad rail. I already have an upper and lower from Aero Precision (it's their gen 2 mil spec), mil spec LPK (can't afford better atm), Magpul MOE furniture w/ carbine buffer assy, Strike ARCH-EL, and detach carry handle sight. I'll likely try other sighting sys later.
Prob gonna drop a chrome BCG in it. Thinking of running a basic brake, but we'll see how the A2 FH does with it being a 20".
Accessories: i already have a light bought for it from Olight with a pressure pad.
Next i'm gonna need a sling, 2-point, though i haven't decided on what i'll get yet.
Gonna get a bipod for it, maybe something Caldwell? Inexpensive and seem okay.
Haven't decided on if i want a foregrip, but prob not.
Mags, like just gonna be running with standard aluminum there.
And that's about it. Think it's gonna be alright for a first AR. I like all of the other kinds of things that people do with their rifles, like optics, light triggers, etc. But i want something that i think is a bit better than "basic" while also being something i can get a better feel for the platform with and still use later down the road while also being a rifle other, lesser experienced people'll feel comfortable about using. Plus i can't afford all that nice stuff lol
Any critiques from anybody? I could sure use it.

    • @legacy1776sibes
      @legacy1776sibes 4 роки тому

@Thelema9331 i'll give up the mobility for the longer range & better ballistics. The rifle will be "general/multi-purpose" you could say, the go-to for most things i'd need a rifle for. But like you said, i could just swap uppers if i want something shorter later. Though that'd also be a gokd excuse for why i would need another AR lol.
I have looked into some of Primary Arms' optics & scopes, if i get anything (which would prob be in the not-so-distsnt future) then i'd get something from them. But tbh, i kinda like irons in general. I know, i'm strange lol.

I really like having a standard FSB on my rifle, and I can run a 2x or 3x ACOG with my Daniel Defense A1.5 in place if I want. No muss, no fuss.
Also, nothing wrong with a regular lower parts kit. I think the GI style trigger is fine for a defensive rifle. Mine out shoots me every time. :p

I think everything mentioned is a great idea, bar the IR stuff cause most people don’t have nods. But great info for those who do. The only gray area problem is with changing the uppers. If I have a rifle with a 16” barrel and throw a 10.5” I now have an SBR. I’m not sure if all you have to do is take the stock off and throw a brace on or if the actual lower has to be registered as a pistol now that it has a short barrel. Also if it is an SBR I don’t think putting a 16” barrel on would make it a normal rifle I think it’s forever an SBR. Maybe someone who knows more about this can comment.

I think people underestimate the value of training videos. Like full lesson long form well filmed and edited highly quality media with high quality instruction. Especially for advanced shooters. Yes you need to go physically learn to shoot. Get comfortable with basic flat range reps and reps and reps but once your 2000 rounds deep. Maybe you’ve carried a gun on the job weather military, security, LEO then video courses become such a great and in my opinion underestimated tool. There is the somewhat true stereotype “what did you learn that shit on UA-cam?” And I get it. People are ridiculous sometimes but if you know what to look for if you are rooted in reality and most importantly if after the video you go actually do the drills and challenge yourself to work through the problems presented then you getting tons and tons of value. Plus if I go through a firearms course I’m gonna make some mistakes and I’m gonna learn from them. Let’s say the instructors find a couple things I’m doing that could be improved upon. They tell me and I improve. That’s a win. But now let’s say I watch 10 guys go through the same course I just went through. They all make different mistakes. Some make more some make less but now I get to learn from all their mistakes as well and if it’s on video I can do it at home without the pressure of range safety and my own muzzle awareness taking me away from fully absorbing the instructions. Thanks Mike @FieldcraftSurvival is the tits

Hi Mike. I know this is a year old but I have a question... I have a nice OLDER AR. It’s a Colt Match Target Lightweight AR15. Old school iron sights that flip for near/far, solid stock akin to the original ARs, and an integrated angled top carry handle (also akin to original ARs). It’s got nothing on it except for a sling, old Aimpoint Comp M, and a fold up bipod. 5.56 1:7 twist, 16” barrel that likes heavy projectiles. It’s not a “platform” for adding tons of accessories. No picatinny handguard. I’m a regular guy who uses it for home protection, light game, and FUN! I’ve taken a 4 day class with it at frontsight, shot well with it, and was totally pleased with it. Tons of fun at the range and in the woods. Not a 308 so I’m not winning the long battle. Feel like I’m missing out by not being able to mod it out with stuff but again I’m a regular guy and not a professional operator; I won’t have use for IR or night vision. Dudes scoff at it but it works well. So is there anything wrong with running an old school AR? Perhaps I’ve answered my own question but I’m not sure a accessory platform is for everyone. Thanks in advance and thanks for that covid /prep video you made while driving, and in one take! Good stuff sir!

Google can explain it more in depth but if you buy a rifle and want to buy a pistol length upper. It’s illegal to put that pistol length upper onto a lower that was once part of a rifle if that makes sense lol. • @charlesludwig9173

Slower twist rates do not support high BC bullets. The United States Army Marksmanship Unit suggests 1/8 and 1/7 twist for the Long Range 77 grain 5.56 round. The original M16 was fitted with a 1/12 twist barrel which stabilized the M193 round 55 grain bullet. That rifle will not stabilize the current M855 62 grain bullet.
