I think they actually called the Boss voice actor during recording and did the bit completely improv, if I remember it correctly. That’s why it sounds so real, because he didn’t know it was coming.
Yeah, it was hyped up to a certain extent. I was genuinely annoyed with this episode when it came out but now that I've got some distance from it, it's pretty funny.
I think this episode was originally meant to be an april fool's joke, but had production delays. I'm not 100% on that, but I DO know that in the day leading up to it originally airing, Adult Swim promoted it HARD like it was some ultra big special episode that was meant to be a huge bonus for the fans waiting for season 2. They treated it like a movie special, and then this is what aired. Absolutely genius.

It is, It was meant to be, every other episode was aired on April fools day besides this one, so they saved this last one for the next year
