Appalachian Trail Day 5 - My 1st Marathon in Chaco Chillo Clogs

Once again… one of the best days of my thru hike and possibly one of the best of my life! I started the morning slow, sleeping in because it was raining and I left my socks and shoes out to dry… now they are rain filled and wet :( so another day hiking in my Chaco Chillo clogs! Haha - Socks & I slept at the GA/NC border, he took off early and I didn’t meet him again until standing Indian. North Carolina started strong with a lot of uphill and a lot of mud. I got into a daze and all of the sudden heard a hiker behind me, I hadn’t been caught yet and this dude Kevin was the first, he is a section hiker and we hiked up to the best view of the trail so far, standing Indian. I dried my clothes off and tent and everything, first submit hiring a while. Socks met up with me there to do the same. I had my best lunch yet, freeze dried sweet pulled pork from my aunt Vickie! I was hesitant on the sweet potatoes, probably just the skin and eyes but looked moldy, socks gladly took the fries haha. Then I started booking it! Made it 20 miles at 7pm where I was going to meet Taylor but he still had 3 hours to drive so I said what the heck I’ll do another 8! Made it to the next amazing view, one of my new favorite fire towers, Albert mountain. Then I started… TRAIL RUNNING! I ran for 6 miles and hit 26.2 for my first marathon ever! Although it was mostly hiking in my sandals, trail running downhill. Jodi Wilding came to mind and I dedicated my first marathon to her. Felt her spirit and good energy pushing me. No coincidence that Taylor was coming to
Hike with me, Mother’s Day weekend. It all made sense. It got dark and I kept running, scared one bear off of the trail. Made it at 9:30 pm for a 29 miles day!! Taylor showed up with 2 Big Macs and a vanilla milkshake for me. Muah! Perfect day! No complaints, couldn’t ask for a better best friend!
