This video is exactly how Chris guides you in discovering your voice with his course 'Discover your Voice' Sometimes it is the simple things that can make a world of difference. I just finished the "Discover your Voice" Exercises/Videos/Feedback that lives up to the course's title. Notice the course title doesn't have the word "Singing" in it, but it does do what the title says it will do -- providing you the tools to discover your voice. Chris' style of teaching is unique and what makes this path of discovery so eventful. Along this path you will see signs that say "noise" "Goofy" "Mickey Mouse" and "one or two line songs" that brings it all together. There will be a big billboard along this path with the words "Feeling" on it. I can't sum up the course in a few paragraphs, nor can you discover your full potential watching one video. Instead, you are given the necessary criteria to discover your voice, and it's potential over a series of videos, exercises, journaling, comment/feedback (the feedback Chris provided to my comments in itself makes the course worth every penny) while having fun discovering your unique voice. Even though I finished the course, it is always there for me to access if needed. It was truly a journey worth every penny-Thanks Chris.
I do, he's hands down the best vocal coach out there. He's going into detail and explains everything in a very easy way plus letting you hear and demonstrating which means that he's taking you through the whole process
Holy crap, you went full Mariah Carey there for a second. Amazing. Thanks for all you do to show us the possibilities of what we can achieve with our voices. 🍻
Chris like what the heck. I didn't even know you had this register dude😱😱😱😱 That's crazy man. Really really love all this wisdom you share with us brother
Really interesting way to find it, I'm a "natural" whistler, so I did it since I was a kid, I remember I could sing together with Mariah all the time, when my voice changed due to puberty I thought I was going to lose it like most people said I would, but it the difference was that I needed to light up more my tone to reach the notes. I think my highest note ever was a A7, which was probably random since I was trying to sing a Eb7 lol.
I watched this and the video; how to properly find the mixed voice; and they were undeniably helpful videos; for me to learn from; about the art of the mixed voice; and the art of whistle tone registry. Thank you; for your very helpful videos. I am currently a Psychology major at Ohio State University. And in between studying for exams; and working on my final papers; for my courses; watching your videos, are the perfect way to keep my mind stimulated, because of the constant retention of newly informative methods; and applying them scientifically. Singing is scientifically; a way to; release emotional tension; from any person; according to psychological science. Thank you again, for your helpful videos. ✌️
Hi Chris. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I used to think that whistle notes are impossible for me to do since I am a bass. Now, I can access as high as F#6 (sustained) and B6 (briefly). I have seen many other tutorials, but only yours works well. Love. Love. Love.
I grew up listening to japanese metal, and because of Dir En Grey's vocalist, Kyo (who can exhale whistle scream), a lot of other band's vocalists started emulating this technique. I was very fond of Mejibray, and, at the time, it naturally came to me that it was an inhale sound, to the point that I was able to reproduce it easily. Imagine the shock when I discovered that it was (most of the time) a type of exhaled "scream". Kyo can still do it, along DEVILOOF's vocalist Keisuke, and many others too. It certainly is one of the things that I strive to learn.
I did the opposite haha. I started listening to Dir En Grey in high school when I saw them on the family values tour in 2006, and till this day they are my favorite band. I figured out how to do it exhale and I'm just now finding there is a way to do it on an inhale.
Crazy Chris, these things you figure out with the human voice is insane. you have a very good ear and your making me listen harder to the vocalists I love and listening to how they get there sounds.
This is the whistle tone tutorial that made the most sense in the 30+ I've watched and tried so far on this topic, inhale and exhale combined. It shows the bad noise we initially make (all i have at this point) and describes the process of progression from there with doable steps. If this is the quality of your teaching then I am buying Will & Elizabeth's course with you for sure. Much appreciated!❤
This is eye opening and really really cool! I have never had a clue as to how to access this part of my voice, but within a few minutes you showed the way! This will be very useful for me! THANKS!
OMG it worked! 😮 This is amazing, Chris! Thank you so much for all the wisdom you pour out to the world for free! Whistle register just like you described never made sense to me, but now I tried following along and I just got to hear it for the first time and I was mesmerized. Thank you so much for sharing this!
This technique BLEW MY MIND. I've always been able to do whistles in the traditional approach so I gave this a try expecting it not to work but was so surprised. I also struggle to hit my whistles when summer hits because of allergies and did not expect to be able to hit them using this technique but I did! Granted, I can go way higher using the traditional technique BUT GET THIS I tested my "traditional" whistles after doing a few "inhale whistles" and I was able to access my full range of "traditional" whistles!!!! So this is also a great warmup exercise for whistles. Thank you, love your videos!
Another great and inspiring video! If this is the first video you have seen from Chris- I will say he is the best musical instructor I have come across out there. His talent for explaining things in a concise, engaging, and relatable way is the key differentiator between him and everyone else. He doesn’t just tell you how he does something, but rather gives you tools to discover what you can do. Most importantly though, he encourages you to find your own unique sound and voice- and to create rather than copy.
Man I'm a professional vocalist and I've been teaching technique for years but the whistle voice was kind of a personal challenge. Your inhale technique just changed my life. I'm gonna practice till I get it really well. Thousand thanks 🙏❤️
Wow! I used to play around with this as a kid but when I started taking lessons in high school, the teacher had no clue what I was talking about so I gave up trying to develop the inhale. Thank you for bringing this back full circle for me. This actually worked!!
Funny thing is, I've been able to do whistle notes for a really long time. I'm a baritone, and I have not yet learned to use mixed voice to gain more range, so basically I can only utilize two different "extremes", if you will. It always catches people off guard.
I’ve been waiting on this one Chris! I’ve been trying (without success) to access whistle for years so I could pull of some Patton-esque vocal gymnastics. I haven’t started the video yet, but you’re responsible for helping me crack the code of singing high notes like Chris Cornell, so I have faith that this will be the video that helps me make the breakthrough! Thanks for all you do Chris, you’re seriously the best teacher on UA-cam!
Wow that’s crazy. I found a whistle voice. Not sure I was on key. But I’ve never went that high with my voice before. I can only do it on inhales right now. But I subscribed, and gonna watch the rest of your videos. Took me like 5 tries to get it, and I can’t sing at all. lol. You just gave me hope that I’ll actually learn how to sing
Accidentally discovered my whistle register last night, it had to be in the 6th Octave somewhere, doubt I'll ever actually use it in the context of a song but it was fun, the human voice really is capable of some weird and wonderful things
I accidentally discovered how to do register And would try to remember the sensation. The way you’re describing it is very accurate and also that shrieking tea kettle sound is so satisfying.
Hahaha... Crazy stuff! 😄 Just hit high A up there in the 5th octave on the first try. Otherwise I can barely get to E5 when I warm up nicely. This can be totally cool surprise to throw in somewhere unexpected and make everyone WTF!??? 🤪 Curious if I can make it on exhale. Another funny thing to practice and annoy neighbors.
This is great, but it should be added, the ultimate goal is to do this on the exhale eventually, but as you say, your experimenting. Inhaling is a good way to help you develop it initially, and I like your going from outwards to inwards as a way of achieving this.
I can totally relate to what you're saying. This is the same way that got me into whistle notes ... i was just fooling around inhaling notes and also trying to do vocal fries but in high notes , and suddenly i found my self hitting those crazy notes in the song "emotion" 😂😂😂 It's totally worth trying
AMAZING! To think that this song has been with me since I was a kid and now you've opened the door for me to practice it, thank you so much for sharing this
I do my gutural sounds inhailing by the nose...blocking it...little air has to pass. I hear some singers saying it is not safe...but I've been doing it for years with no pain at all. Now you make me realise I can ckean it for wisttle tones. Chris you are a great teacher and inspiration! Cheers from Argentina.
This has gotta be the craziest/best video ive seen from you! I didnt even know I could inhale my whistle notes. It came out so strong after a few times thank you for all your out of the box tutorials I appreciate you!!!
Chris, you’re so right on the money! My first whistles used to come from C6 to G#6 with vibratto, only by that reverse phonation in vocal fry was I able to control and navigate the pitch up to C8. After Covid, now I’ve inched up back to mid-range whistles. So glad I watched you.
Reverse phonation helps me to obtain my whistle, first I can only hit to D6 when inhaled now my consistent range was F2 up to A#7 (exhaled), I also hit C8 4x while washing dishes haha, thankss!!!
These are the best tutorials hands down! This is the only time I've ever heard of someone going from death metal to mariah carey. I thought I was the only one. I could whistle on and off in highschool then I hit puberty at 28 and the cracks are annoying as hell but my range opened back up into whistles as well as more bottom end. Breath control and transitions between the registers will be the trickiest part
I have tried various methods and practiced for more than ten years, and this is the first time I have touched the door of whistle tone. And initial attempts have been successful. Thank you very much! !
This is super impressive, but as someone who comes from and is mostly interested in the world of extreme metal vocals, I wonder how to translate this to exhale screams. I can kind of figured out how to exhale “whistle scream” by using vocal harmonics (so maybe it’s more of a “tea kettle” or “hyper-squeal”, than true whistle tones), but I don’t know if that’s how most extreme vocalist approach it. For anyone interested the kinds of sounds that I’m talking about / vocalists I am able to roughly emulate with this approach, I’d highly recommend you check out the bands Forces, Beyond Deviation, and Nylist.
I accidentally figured this out and you’re right. I can do it on command really well by now. I usually just hold one note and it’s never when singing just randomly but the compression is a lot of pressure that doing it long will fatigue my tonsil area a little so, funny I find your stuff I goof off with and you actually implement it to something useful. 😂
I've used inhales for that really fry'd out screechy thing before but never tried to actually hit a specific pitch. Definitely gonna have to experiment with this myself.
AMAZING is an understatement. As I watched this, Your take on it has done for me, in only five minutes, what i’ve spent a decade or so failing at even coming close to. Alas! the notes I, ME, just sorta made!! Were 🥳🥳lol. You’re technique n practice is priceless. Thank you for sharing!
This was amazing!! And with this and the last video, you have inadvertently made me realize one of the vocal techniques of one of my favorite metal vocalists, Kyo of the Japanese band Dir en Grey. He often uses this technique and I thought I'd never be able to imitate it, safely! Thank you so much again!
this is really cool. I've been experimenting with normal speaking and notes and regular range whistles on the inhale. I have only seen a whistle tone video on the exhale notes before. this is awesome. thanks.
My voice has been perpetually hoarse and I have mostly been missing twang, making the entire range starting at A3 difficult. I tried breathy falsetto slides down and it didn't help. Then I practiced whistle register. Instant improvement! It can't be breathy, though. Twang won't work with breathiness and quickly goes to distortion if you try. As always, whistle register is fixing my voice. I don't trust anything else now.
that was awesome, i've been messin' around with inhale vocalizations just joking around but you just made me see how you can increase vocal agility with practice
Oh wow thank you, I've never heard anyone explain it in this way and i have a much better understanding of how to achieve it. Will definitely be practicing this technique, Thank You!!!!!!
For years i wanted to know what tires was called. I really thought i had damaged my voice when i discovered this many years ago. I only found this after failing to hit a c5 in head voice, i inhaled and got it back in 1990s.. Since then i thought i was wrong. But now I’ve tried again and hit F5, I’ll continue to develop this… thanks
It took me a while to learn how to inhale whistle as a kid, and it will definitely take some work to learn this. What an insane technique! You’ve got it down pretty well already!
The only time I managed to reach a whistle note was straight through my head voice. I was trying to do a line of a Backstreet Boys song and what I remember of the experience and how it was that I reached that note was that my voice was pretty relaxed, I had done some clean voice warmups and I just kept pushing my head voice until I reached the note. If I had screamed or sung anything raspy I wouldn't have been able to reach that note. It wasn't a pretty high one though. Funny enough, I've been doing that same sound you do but just for the laughs because it sounds really funny, I never thought it could help you find the whistle register, although it seems pretty hard to do a clean transition from chest or head voice. Guess it's a matter of experimenting with it and give it time
I just passed out while watching this and kept hearing it in my dream 😆 In my dream I was at my mom’s trying to turn the volume down, so she wouldn’t hear the pterodactyl noises 😂 Then, I tried pausing it over and over and it wouldn’t work. Great tips tho lol
Thanks for the tips coach. I accidentally discovered my Whistle register by accident yesterday first thing in the morning. At that time my highest note was an F#6. Today I sung a G6. I'm just trying build consistency. Regards.
Holy shite! It's a wonder and a surprise to find another human to have discovered this. I found it from playing harmonica. I did find that I can get way higher in pitch with inhale voice than regular. Thanks for this vid. I finally subscribed after a few, so overwhelmed with coaches. I dig your approach to singing. It's rare and precious in this dumb down society. Thank you for holding a music Craft channel open.
DUDE!!!! omg, you just gave me the piece I'd been missing. I was so close. I had just told someone that I thought it had something to do with the fact that I, (to this &^&%% day, I can NOT whistle blowing air out,) I'm going to work on this

Is Chris inhaling or exhaling in the demonstration recording by the microphone?
Holy hell. This is utter insanity. I feel blessed by a higher power to have this ability unlocked.

You are genius, I finally could hit a clean C7 without strain, the key is try to do it with inhale and the exhale, supposedly anyone could do it
You are perfection. Just exceptional among other vocal coaches here on yt.
Lol bro you make your teaching fun as hell👍
Genius dude,il be using this as I'm a bon Jovi tribute band singer and many times I've needed notes like this . amazing
Daaaaam! that "emotions" whistle was incredible!
that was awesome, i've been messin' around with inhale vocalizations just joking around but you just made me see how you can increase vocal agility with practice
This method really works! Thank you very much!
Continuing to blow my mind with these nuggets of info.
It took me a while to learn how to inhale whistle as a kid, and it will definitely take some work to learn this. What an insane technique! You’ve got it down pretty well already!
Ya, still working on it... It feels good now, and that's the first step!
I watched this on LSD and I tried so hard not cracking up but this is a really cool informative video all jokes and play aside
Wow! Great! I love your techniques and I found them really helpful. I managed a few whistle notes. Thank you!
Oh my, I've always done this by inhaling! I can't reach those notes yet, but I thought it was wrong doing it this way haha
What a crazy guy... A lot of talent with down to earth attitude ... I admire you bro👍🙏
This make so much sense Chris! I understand it way better! Thank you so much!
Holy hell man. Incredible
Guess it's a matter of experimenting with it and give it time
I just passed out while watching this and kept hearing it in my dream 😆
In my dream I was at my mom’s trying to turn the volume down, so she wouldn’t hear the pterodactyl noises 😂 Then, I tried pausing it over and over and it wouldn’t work.
Great tips tho lol
Tea is ready! 😁
Wow what a vocal range!
Thanks for the tips coach. I accidentally discovered my Whistle register by accident yesterday first thing in the morning. At that time my highest note was an F#6. Today I sung a G6. I'm just trying build consistency.
Regards.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely beautiful to hear your voice in that girly sound!!!
Thank you so much! Because of you I'm finally able to do the whistle note. God bless you!💖
You're so welcome!
This has got to be magic!
I haven't found any of those nice clean notes yet, but I've managed some nice inhale screams. Thanks Chris.
Nice!
Amazing! Seeing the process is so incredibly useful. Thank you.
Grit on the inhale...I love it! So do crows and ravens. I can imitate lots of their sounds with inhale grit.
DUDE!!!! omg, you just gave me the piece I'd been missing. I was so close. I had just told someone that I thought it had something to do with the fact that I, (to this &^&%% day, I can NOT whistle blowing air out,) I'm going to work on this
