According to the music video director, Bowie was fighting to live up till the last minute and didn't actually know the cancer had won until after the music video had been shot. However, he must have known there was a chance he wasn't going to beat it.

That's the way I feel when I hear Time in a Bottle and The Dance. My grandson's dad died of cancer and he chose those songs to be played at his funeral.
@@michellepotter9541The Dance. Played the night of my fiancé’s funeral at the bar as we consoled each other as best we could. I had never heard that song before and will never forget how it made me feel. I’d do it all over again, even knowing the pain it still causes me, 30 years ago this month.
I still wish his hand or something had been removed and sent into space. Then a little piece of David would always be "Floating in a tin can... far above the world...".
Bowie entering the closet: his coffin. The two Bowie's: the bedridden one to symbolise his body decaying, the active one dancing and writing around the room to symbolise his mind's determination to finish the album, mind over matter. The girl under his bed trying to claw at him: symbolises the cancer trying to take hold of him, and, eventually, succeeding. RIP Bowie, we'll sure as hell miss you.

I would like to think the closet represents another dimension to another world Bowie and all his aliases came from. Which the young and energetic Bowie from Station to Station came from and went back to. Letting us know he lives on even though his physical human body has died.
How truly admirable. The man knew he was going to die, yet he spent his last days working his ass off, writing and recording music and shooting music videos. It shows what his art and music really meant to him.
Warren Zevon did a similar thing with his final studio album, he was losing a battle with lung cancer and his last CD is basically him confronting his own mortality. Really heavy stuff.

David was good friends with Freddie Mercury, and Queen, and he learned a lot from Freddie's death. Freddie was hounded by the press as he was ill, and dying, so David cleverly concealed his own illness until the very end. David also saw that even Freddie was dying, that he still went into the studio, and created one last masterpiece with Queen - the 'Innuendo' album, which was Freddie's goodbye to his fans. David also gathered all of his strength, as Freddie did years earlier, and recorded his own final masterpiece, and farewell to his fans, to the world. We can't beat death, but we can - if we're clever, go out on our own terms, which is what David did. Well done Major Tom.
That's YOUR opinion - Which I also find to be nonsense. I suggest knowing your Rock 'n Roll history, before attempting to point out the mistakes of others, when there are no such mistakes.
Bowie and Mercury obviously knew one another from their time working together on the Under Pressure single but the question here was how well did they really know one another? I googled it and found several articles stating they had been friends since the early 70s. What I read said they had first met in 1972 and became good friends.
He knew. He gave us a final testament to his achievements and failures. He showed us his struggles, his emotions. He showed us his freedom. He showed us his life. Farewell, Starman, and thankyou.
Supreme Nugget! I agree with you exactly. The "Blackstar" album is a farewell, a valedictory, and beautifully made. I miss him, and I still think his work is superior.
God I miss David Bowie. Imagine knowing you don't have much time left and making it into a song. The song makes me cry all the time. Rest in peace, man.
I’m still crying for you, David. You are the exact definition of ART and REINVENTION. You lived for your art till your last breath. My king, hope you’re enjoying the space ❤️
You have liver cancer, 18 months left to live, and a net worth of $230 million. How do you spend your last moments? On drugs? Sex? Wild escapes across the World? Maybe you would. Bowie, however, got himself into the recording booth and lent his whole voice rehearsing and recording over and over--shooting scenes and retaking them for videos constantly, despite dying of a fatal and often painful diease. That's Bowie's way of doing it. Giving us--all of us--his last moments. That is arguably the greatest gift anyone has ever given me.
He wrote this song looking at the gaping jaws of death, slowly closing on him, saying one last goodbye to life and us from beyond the grave. He caught the moment between being alive and having passed away, immortalized it, and by extension, immortalized himself. What a musical genius.
Zan You couldn't be more wrong. Are you American, by chance? I've never been a big fan of American music - it's a product to be sold. Music like this is real - it's art. If you can't appreciate that, then that's your problem.
I don't get emotional when stars pass away but I did the day David Bowie died. This masterpiece of an album came out two days before his passing, January 8th, on his 69th birthday. My husband and I listened non-stop for months, helping us mourn the passing of this great genius. Little did I know that seven years later on the exact day, I would lose my husband of 13 years suddenly and unexpectedly. As you can imagine this song has taken on new significance. Jimmy will live on forever in my heart.
Look up here, I;m in Danger: That;s Bowie saying his goodbyes to this crazy world, that can;t tell he is a true guineas Plus, he's not taking my News Paper, Be happy, he's out of Misery and scaring the Angels.
+alx64uchiha And when he says "I've got nothing left to lose", he's accepting the truth that he's going to die soon, but he's okay with it because he has no regrets and he's already accomplished so much in life.
I sat next to my Granddad's bed as he was passing away. The parts in the video where David leans upward and off the pillow it reminded me of something my Granddad started doing in his final days. It's like he could feel himself going and would try to sit up and grab the rail of the bed hospice brought in for him so he could be at home with his family instead of in the hospital. I believe there is a veil between here and the other side. The closer you get to death the thinner the veil becomes. As far as the meaning behind this and the other songs and videos, I'm not really sure what I think or how I feel about them quite yet. One of those things that will come to you in time it's right for you to understand it. Wherever he is I hope he's in peace.
To me there ain't no vail. It's just you wanna stay alive so you try and hold on to something...anything but you go anyways. I don't get why people have such strong feelings about death it's just fear. I'm afraid to die I love life. I know I'll still die but even then I try to live. So I just think that people need time to except death I think that this song is probably about fear and excepting death.
+Carrie Carden i understand you sweetie, for i have literally watched many loved ones pass..some will usually take three deep breaths then let the air out and slip away..
+Carrie Carden To be in the flow of creativity, or the purity of meditation, is to be in a state of death. Because those are states of total surrender of the ego. Bowie was there many times.
+TheDiabethick Yup. musical genius ;) One of the very best vocalists too... Was remembering when he did Christmas songs with Bing Crosby... pleasant memories...
+Snoozing Lion. Bing would probably shit his pants if he heard Bowie's new music...of course, maybe he's listening from above...and yes, Little Drummer Boy featuring Bowie and Bing was pretty damn cool!
+TheDiabethick And what is also great is that he would get really successful doing something and then gave it up for something untried, risky. He could have kept making Ziggy Stardust albums which were we pleasing his fan base and selling too. He didn';t move on because he HAD to. But he decided to move on. to continue to challenge himself. This often displeased the fans who wanted more of the same.... but he did what he wanted. So its always funny to me when people say that a certain album was the "best" or the worst. Usually it means that the particular genre didn't speak to them, not that the album was subjectively bad.
+TheDiabethick one type of genre would get tiresome after a while. he explored many genre's to open up more creativity and to keep up with the forever changing style of music
“I’ve now decided that my death should be very precious. I really want to use it. I’d like my death to be as interesting as my life has been and will be.” - David Bowie, 1976 (interview with Playboy)

Something interesting I noticed this time watching the video is the significance of the aspect ratio. The whole thing occurs in such a small, closed frame. For me, it implies death closing in on Bowie. Such a beautiful goodbye. David Bowie is one of the finest artists of our time or any time for that matter. Rest In peace Starman.

My dearest daddy was a fan of Bowie. He once said jokingly that he would like it for his funeral. And it will be so. He died yesterday. He lived shorter than David, because dad passed away at the age of 64. Cancer took him too.
Chills me to the bone that this video was released 3 days before he died. This song was his parting gift. We are looking up David, and we can see you in heaven.
@@bboynewsboy991 So you're just going to lie, put forth out of context quotes, and ignore dozens of other quotes? You are a bad person. Are you a Satanist and just really want Bowie to be one too? Because he's not.
Im not going to lie, I was not a Bowie fan and I unfortunately never listened to his music while he was alive. I heard someone talking about this video and the way they described it made me have to watch and as soon as I turned it on I was extremely haunted. The fact that this man knew he was dying and turned it into pure art shows true genius. I’m disappointed that I couldn’t appreciate his brilliance earlier.
It's not late. His art will live forever and, luckily, be an example of the infinite beauty humans can create. Be grateful you have the open mind and good taste to be able to enjoy it now, my friend.

@acar7421 dunno, I'm with @lemagreengreen. I doubt there's many days go by when I don't listen to one of his tracks. I probably think of him to some degree at that level too.
This man wasnt just an artist. He art in the flesh. This man was kind, empathetic, genuis, dark and bright at the same time. This world is better because you were in it, and we will never, ever forget you. I love you, Mr. David Bowie.
“Oh, I’ll be free. Ain’t that just like me?” …This hits *hard.* How does he do it? How does he compress the decades of impact he’s had on the world into two fucking sentences? In life, or in death, he’s still David Bowie.
What an incredible way to say goodbye in his own way. He knew he would be leaving soon and this video, and the song, really telegraph that to his fans. What an amazing song and what an amazing artist. Rest in peace.
+SageOverride Wow!! That is 10 min of my life that I can never get back. Of course, I thought that was the worst of it - that it wouldn't be possible to ever waste a greater amount of life than from watching that shrek.....?? But then - I read your blathering drivel and realized I was wrong. It can always get worse!!!! :^(
We didn't thumb it up or thumb it down because we know as of this moment, he couldn't care less. THANK YOU for the music David - you're an incredible inspiration and human being.
for an artist, that used so many colours and shades thorughout his whole carreer, it's all so dark here.....he used a total different approach to his latest music than Freddie Mercury did , like they had something to communicate about some kind of dimension ,they were entering in...
Most people with that disease cannot even turn in bed. How he got the strength to do this video I don't know. It''s hard to put on costumes, the lights, rehearsal, sync with the music, etc. If this was filmed 3 days before his end, it is beyond a miracle.
+ProfessorRaskolnikov I work with three people (young, 19-26) who never heard of him. Hard for me to believe, but then, I couldn't name a single singer who came to fame after 1992 or so.
Diane Howard True, but those singers aren't nearly as world-renown as Bowie. Not knowing Bowie is almost like not knowing who Elvis is. Shame there are some who have never heard of him, though.
I can't even imagine...becoming such a shining star in your youth, keeping it burning all the way until your older days, and going out with a fire this bright!❤🔥
I love the little dance he does when he sings the "By the time I got to New York" part. It's like he's kind of mocking and poking fun at his flamboyant past, but there's a quick shot where you can see he can't help but smile. It's a little thing, but it's touching.
AceAttorny I agree. It is the best part of an otherwise very grim and disturbing requiem. When he puts his hand on his hip, I call that his Bette Davis moment. Notice also that at this point he is wearing the very same Kabbalah/astral travel suit that he could be seen wearing 40 years earlier in the photo that appeared on the back cover of some editions of his 1976 "Station to Station" album.
This video was meant to be...I'm not sure if this is the right word I'm looking for...allegorical pertaining to his long career and the various stages and directions he took throughout. It seems to be a nod to the tendency among people and media to pigeonhole him into one specific creative eras, when he's clearly moved passed that and grown. As if he's saying that "it was all characters. I take the David Bowie you know out of the closet, I put him back in and I move on and then under it all, I'm the human David Bowie and I'm real. All those Bowie's you've seen have all been facets of me, are still here, and always will be." Throughout it all, being so ferociously creative and full of ideas to the point where he can't fit them all in. It's both sentimental and heartbreaking.
very touching as he knew he was dying and its fitting he released this I lost a cousing who was an ace attorney himself.. to cancer like My cousins father and the iconic David Bowie..
perfectly described. i discovered david bowie like a week after he died and didn‘t know he died until late 2017. i didn‘t think too much of it because i was littler but thinking about it now and watching this video is dark in a way that hits soooo different. SOUL-CRUSHING
+Joe Julet yeah kinda, but Cash recorded Hurt in 2002 and he died in Sept. 12 2003 (although the video was released 2 months after he died on nov 2003)
That's it. I didn't live in a time where David Bowie was Mainstream, I know some of his work (Obviously, kinda hard to live in such a big obivion), even have some of his songs in my fav lists but I am not someone you would call a huge fan or anything. And I was completely blown away when I first saw this, considering the cotext of how this was produced, I really cried it when I saw it for the first time, and its still hard to hold the tears today. This is the work of a genious, there's no way to deny that.
I imagine that one of the the greatest difficulties when it comes to facing your own mortality, is to accept that there are ideas and creations you have yet to make, that you will never get to make. Seeing Bowie at the table, writing frantically evokes that feeling in me. Wonderful song. He went out with style.
Nah Mate. Dying Basically it's not the problem that you never got to make anything...and I'm going to cut you all....and say the problem with dying....drum roll please.....is EXACTLY THAT...YOU AH GO DEAD!!!!
His last video... somehow revealing his fatal sickness... and the way he disappears from view, all shaking as he climbs backwards inside that cupboard... such a subtle metaphora of his future demise (as a demise is nothing else than disappearing from everybody's view... forever !) ...We'll never forget you, David. And your music neither.Thank You.
+Dixxy It's also interesting that it features the same "character" (the blindfolded guy) as in his Blackstar video. It seems to me that it seems this picks off as when the other video ended... Like one last message in two parts.
To think he spent his last bit of time, whilst in a lot of discomfort and pain, making another album for us, knowing he'd likely never live passed it's release, wow, it takes a great person to want to give a little more, push through the pain and see it to the end! Legend all the way. The Starman, the thin white duke, the hero ...Legend.
The Greatest Music Video Ever Written, Produced, Edited, Conceived, And Every thing! The only music Video that gives me genuine emotion outside of the music. RIP Bowie, you are dearly missed ❤
My dad is now at the same age as Bowie was. My dad has the exact same disease, and he is just as weak as we can see Bowie was. I can imagine how many takes shooting this video required due to the disease. Like David Bowie, my dad was a professional musician, all his life was about music and he played in many rock bands. Everyone in the town, who had something to do with music knew my dad. Like David Bowie, my dad wasn't interested in dressing conventionally. Before this disease got so bad as it is now, he expressed himself by wearing just anything he liked. He was a rebel, and people weren't sure if he was a boy or a girl. This song sounds like what it feels like when the air is slowly getting thinner and thinner and we know what's going to happen very soon. Thinking about it makes my brain whirl. This song sounds exactly like what it feels like. I don't know if it's a matter of days or weeks, but it's soon. I can't imagine my life after his death, but I have promised him to be strong. I have never experienced anything as sad as this. I love my dad very much.
My dad left us last Sunday. His last days and nights, he was constantly surrounded by people who loved him. His last hours, my sister and I played music to him that we knew he loved. His last minutes, he was calm and full of love. He wrote so much music, and he could have been a fame but did not want to.
"When we were shooting Lazarus, he knew that he only had a month or 2 left of his life; we were sitting there, me and David and Jimmy King, who's his longtime collaborator, stylist, archivist and all that kind of stuff. We're sitting watching the playback of the take we just did and one of us said - I don't remember who it was, to be honest, I think it was Jimmy: 'Hey David, wouldn't it be funny if you ended the video by going back into the closet.' And David started giggling like mad: 'Yeah, look, David Bowie has come back into the closet! Fuck yeah, we've got to do that. Let's do that right away.' Even at the very end of things, he would have a laugh and he would be audacious. He had an enormous loyalty to his fans." - Johan Renck (Director), from 'David Bowie: A Life' by Dylan Jones.

I would like to think the closet represents another dimension to another world Bowie and all his aliases came from. Which the young and energetic Bowie from Station to Station came from and went back to. Letting us know he lives on even though his physical human body has died.
Clive Bindley you need new glasses
How truly admirable. The man knew he was going to die, yet he spent his last days working his ass off, writing and recording music and shooting music videos. It shows what his art and music really meant to him.
Warren Zevon did a similar thing with his final studio album, he was losing a battle with lung cancer and his last CD is basically him confronting his own mortality. Really heavy stuff.
He didn't go anywhere the space man just went back to mars.

This is nonsense. Bowie and Mercury were not close friends. Bowie was a friend of Roger Taylor.
@me notyou - Exactly. Thank You. Nothing nonsensical about it.
Freddie Mercury only went public with his illness at the very end. He was hounded by the press because he looked ill before that.
He knew.
He gave us a final testament to his achievements and failures. He showed us his struggles, his emotions.
He showed us his freedom.
He showed us his life.
Farewell, Starman, and thankyou.

I feel he captures the emotion he was going through knowing whats coming. Disturbed, acceptance, with a sense of calm underlying.
Beautiful interpretation man
He was looking at a gaping hole the law says you shouldn't.

You said exactly what I was thinking.... and I couldn't have said it better myself.
How he turned his death in to a masterpiece. What a unique genius he was.
Varth Mader he turned his death into an art project
Turning your actual death into a concept album is fucking genius and just makes an already musical legend into a towering colossus.

I sat next to my grandads bed as he took his last breath , also sat up like that , you must know when the end is so x
+Carrie Carden I "saw" my dad's last breath merge with the cosmos. It gave me supreme peace. Cancer is such an awful death for the body.

+Snoozing Lion. Bing would probably shit his pants if he heard Bowie's new music...of course, maybe he's listening from above...and yes, Little Drummer Boy featuring Bowie and Bing was pretty damn cool!
Jake and the neverland pirates videos jake and the neverland pirates

The Gooner I Can't Give Everything Away is the real tearjerker on Blackstar.
well you should listen to hurt by johnny cash
Eric Cartman overrated
Makes me cry like a kid.
I have trouble listening to it because it makes me emotional, but I have to every now and again because it's so haunting and poignant.
It's both sentimental and heartbreaking.
very touching as he knew he was dying and its fitting he released this I lost a cousing who was an ace attorney himself.. to cancer like My cousins father and the iconic David Bowie..

experimenting and innovating and pushing the edges right up until the very end...ain't that just like him?
absolutely!
He was atheist
+Carel Remy what does that have to do with anything?
+Carel Remy Agnosticism is different from atheism.
+Doug Campbell completly TRUE.
One of the greatest music videos of all time. Even someone who is not a fan can appreciate the emotions of this video.
TRULY BRO
2:43 Heart wrenching how he pictures writing frantically with not much time left.
Watching these videos doesn't make me feel like he's gone. The magic's still here, he lives in his music.
Yes I am still crying p.s I'm a softy for this kind of stuff
yh man so true
So true
+Þ WE live in all our moments~
I still hear him in the mall
I imagine that one of the the greatest difficulties when it comes to facing your own mortality, is to accept that there are ideas and creations you have yet to make, that you will never get to make. Seeing Bowie at the table, writing frantically evokes that feeling in me.
Wonderful song. He went out with style.
Exactly what I was thinking
Nah Mate. Dying Basically it's not the problem that you never got to make anything...and I'm going to cut you all....and say the problem with dying....drum roll please.....is EXACTLY THAT...YOU AH GO DEAD!!!!
@@zipperdan3969 n o
@@zipperdan3969 Do you have no idea what it means to die?
It's more painful to die and reallize you'll leave nothing behind and no will morn over your death .
Many peoples are lonely and they will die lonely.
+Dixxy It's a total masterpiece.
+Dixxy : So true. The theme is totally about his demise and his life together. Brilliant David, as always.
+Steve Mullington totally agree with out question
+Dixxy It's also interesting that it features the same "character" (the blindfolded guy) as in his Blackstar video. It seems to me that it seems this picks off as when the other video ended... Like one last message in two parts.
lovely comment
"I just gotta write one more thing!" Heartbreaking video/song.
Heroes always get remembered but you know legends never die
Amen
+Sarah Gomez That was said wayyy before Panic! at the Disco ever appeared.
p!atd
PANIC! AT THE DISCO
Oh my god you're literally killing me
To think he spent his last bit of time, whilst in a lot of discomfort and pain, making another album for us, knowing he'd likely never live passed it's release, wow, it takes a great person to want to give a little more, push through the pain and see it to the end! Legend all the way.
The Starman, the thin white duke, the hero ...Legend.
Old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in
Just like Freddie Mercury,,,,,,both together 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇵🇱🎶🎶👌💕
Martin P
Thumbs up
Martin P David died two dies after the release of the album.
It wasn't a little more but way more than that
David Bowie: creates one of the most emotional songs I’ve ever heard
Also David Bowie: “I WaS lOoKiNg FoR yOuR aSs”
Bruh moment
When I saw that comment I heard it in the song at the same time I’m watching it
I mean-
Joe Mama I did too that’s so weird.
Unicat Scrunchy :/
The Greatest Music Video Ever Written, Produced, Edited, Conceived, And Every thing! The only music Video that gives me genuine emotion outside of the music.
RIP Bowie, you are dearly missed ❤
The final scene when he disappears into the wardrobe is very powerful, symbolically his casket. We will never forget you.
Hey you should listen to a band called The Doublejumps if you like David Bowie
True
yeah it was one of his fashion
Casket? Not quite. It's a wardrobe, like in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." It leads to another world. Bowie lives on somewhere else.
@@lindarockower6028 May I tell you all about David Bowie?
Is it terminal
Take care my friend. Stay strong.
Good thoughts to you in the days ahead. It sounds like your father has left behind a very good legacy in you.
Prayers.
My dad left us last Sunday. His last days and nights, he was constantly surrounded by people who loved him. His last hours, my sister and I played music to him that we knew he loved. His last minutes, he was calm and full of love.
He wrote so much music, and he could have been a fame but did not want to.
wow he really did reach his creative peak right at the end
in some way, I guess he did. never has anyone had a career like this, especially a career end like THIS, it's a work of art
+Riordan Pett death as a work of art
+Matt Rose you are disgusting :)
Yeah he realized an album on his birthday said bye Felicia and after being under pressure he died
+Brad Palato ?????
Can’t believe it’s 9 years since you left us 😢
That beautiful SOB. He turned his own death into artistic expression. Genius to the end.
how right you are Bruce ----The closet ending wow
+dvddjscottymack Yes, the ending gave me the chills the first time I saw it - now it's on a whole new level. R.I.P. David.
+Rasmus Mäkelä Lazarus wasn't he risen from the dead ?? in the bible ? hmm mm gotta research
Sad and beautiful. RIP, sir.
"Ain't that just like me".
Absolutely.
this is how to leave the world like a legend i give props to david bowie
"When we were shooting Lazarus, he knew that he only had a month or 2 left of his life; we were sitting there, me and David and Jimmy King, who's his longtime collaborator, stylist, archivist and all that kind of stuff.
We're sitting watching the playback of the take we just did and one of us said - I don't remember who it was, to be honest, I think it was Jimmy:
'Hey David, wouldn't it be funny if you ended the video by going back into the closet.'
And David started giggling like mad: 'Yeah, look, David Bowie has come back into the closet! Fuck yeah, we've got to do that. Let's do that right away.'
Even at the very end of things, he would have a laugh and he would be audacious. He had an enormous loyalty to his fans." - Johan Renck (Director), from 'David Bowie: A Life' by Dylan Jones.
THANK YOU FOR THIS
OMG! Thank You for sharing this!
That's awesome. But, tbh, I was kind of hoping that last shot was his way of telling us he didn't actually die, he escaped to Narnia.
Thanks for sharing 😊
@@johnplaysgames3120 i was so hoping this was the prank of his life, make the world believe he died for a day or two - only to come back like Lazarus did.
He knew his days were coming to an end, and he made it into a work of art.
That's amendable.
