Why Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken Is Actually Great

- Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken is a movie I've loved ever since it came out, but I feel people really don't give it enough credit for what it does. It's more than just a generic teen drama story, its character, story, and visuals are far greater than what people give credit for and I wanted to try and stand up for it. And I also want to go into why and how it was sabotaged by the studio in a suprising way. But I have a lot to talk about and hopefully you can see why its one of my favorite Dreamworks movies.
If you liked the video, please like and share. This is a new channel so I need to rely on it being shared around in order to gain more attention, so please spread it around in anyway you can. - Фільми й анімація

Thank you so much for giving this underrated gem a positive review. I am dumbfounded and frustrated this film, which I had a blast with, bombed at the box office last year. Regardless of what anyone says, this film will always hold a special place in my heart as such a fun movie, and one of my all-time favorite animated films, particularly from Dreamworks. Also, just to get this out of the way, I'm sick and tired of people getting their expectations so high to the point where it's like, every movie they see has to be a masterpiece or break the mold on how we see and make movies. What I mean by that, is it seems many people out there were so blown away by Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, they expected this movie to be another mind-blowing, break-the-mold movie, which as we can see, were expectations from many audience members that were never reached. That's sort of a pet-peeve of mine, because hey, I get it, we all have different opinions on what movies or types of movies we enjoy from the movie business, and I hate to burst some bubbles hear, but not every movie that is made or will be made is going to blow you out of the water or be mind-blowing. There are certainly films out there that are, but not every movie is going to be a masterpiece, even movies that follow up other films people view as masterpieces. This actually reminds me of other times when it seems audience members felt this way. Another great example of this happening is when the movie Congo came out and people were hoping is was going to blow them out of the water like the original Jurassic Park did, but again, that film came out and flopped because it seems a huge factor, was people saying "It didn't break the mold for filmmaking like Jurassic Park did at the time" and I'm sorry, but I love and adore the movie Congo. Do I feel like Jurassic Park is a better movie than Congo, yes, but at the same time, Congo is still a fun adventure movie with witty humor, likable characters, solid special effects, and fun edge-of-your-seat action scenes. There's also the time back when Pixar released the original/first Toy Story movie and once again, was seen as a mind-blowing movie, and then they followed it up with A Bug's Life. Again while I do like the original/first Toy Story more, A Bug's life is still a fun, colorful, and cute movie that I have fun with. Bottom line, the point I'm trying to make here is, don't expect every follow-up to a film many people viewed as a masterpiece, to automatically be another masterpiece that breaks the mold or blows you out of the water, because not every movie has the ability to do that, let alone view that as a high priority, if one at all.
Ruby Gillman is both my comfort movie, and spirit animal character. 😃🥰💖
I concur my friend. As a fan of cecealia/cilophyte (octopus mermaid essentially), this was a bit of a dream come true for me! Ruby marks the milestone for the first film centered on a cecealia! =D
One thing you didn't mention that was done well/ subverted my expectations - When Ruby declared that she was going to go to prom, I immediately thought that I would have to see some long, boring sequence of them planning the escape, creating a cover story, and the plan failing. Imagine how happy I was when they skipped it entirely. Also, I like how Ruby ended up in the water not to spite her mom, but to save a life. So much better than just being disobedient.
IKR I'm sick of the "teen rebel" stuff like from Turning Red. I prefer this movie because Ruby's actually a genuinely good role model for kids and just has a low self esteem.
8:40
That kinda explains why I liked this movie so much. I have always cared more about the characters rather than what happens in the story/plot
This was a beautiful video, thank you so much for making it.

Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken is the perfect example of cute, solid, well-developed, strong and heartwarming.

Granted it didn't do well at the box office. But much like The Road to El Dorado, Megamind and Rise of the Guardians, I'm sure this movie will find a cult following in a few years.
In 2026
Yes, all of my yes! I had to drop everything to watch this after stumbling upon it. Ruby's become one of my favorite films and her character has cemented herself as a comfort character to me. People aren't talking about how gorgeous this film is and how just dang lovable the whole cast is. It really is a shame how dirty this film was done. Speaking of theories, it looked like Ruby actually had its release date swapped with Migration. Migration was meant to come out on June 30 till Ruby took its place. Almost like they knew everything in June would bomb and instead of letting the top dollar Minion people's flick get hit, due to the billion dollar success of Mario, they choose Ruby instead.
I remember telling my mother and father that I want to watch this and I watched this movie and had a blast with it, it was nuts.
If you enjoyed Ruby Gillman, I'd highly recommend reading the webcomic Sacrelim
I feel like I wound up clicking so much with Ruby because she reminded me so much of the protag of the comic Adam Milton

This movie is so underrated and misunderstood! It's really another banger from dreamworks! But for some reason, most people just can't see that! But I saw it twice: the first time when it was still in theaters, and a second time on digital. That's how much I enjoyed it! I agree; Ruby Gillman is a really good movie. Reminded me of Sky High as well as Turning Red. So right about RG subverting tropes while using a familiar structure. Rubber hose animation + bioluminescence is a great look.
You know, I could definitely see this movie become one of those cult classics in a few years.
Once people decide to watch a movie for just pure, freaking entertainment that you’re supposed to watch movies for, instead of nitpicking and criticizing the HECK out of it.
As soon as people realize this movie may be simple, but simple is NOT A BAD THING. And it’s not the story that gets you hooked, it’s the characters.
Miraculous Ladybug has some of the WORST writing I’ve ever seen, but I love the characters and the interactions between them. That’s why I watch it.
Kinda the same with Ruby Gillman. The story is simple but engaging, but you watch for the characters. And the animation actually, too.
I’ve believed that myself, that the story is semi-predictable but the characters themselves help make it more enjoyable than most others of its genre. 😁😎
Thank you for being one of the few who actually saw the good in this fun movie uwu

Me too.
Honestly, I can't compare this to Little Mermaid even tho they make fun of Little Mermaid but I can compare this to Turning Red and in my opinion, it tackled the same topics that Turning Red tackled but they did it BETTER! Obviously, because everything Disney does, DreamWorks can do better! 1. Mei just simped for the popular hunks while Ruby actually had a crush on a nerdy guy who she had spark with, and kind of liked her back! 2. They handled the mother-daughter and the mother-grandma-granddaughter relationships better than Turning Red did and I felt like I could relate to both Ruby and Agatha. Tbh, this movie DESERVED SO MUCH *BETTER* THAN WHAT IT GOT! I usually hate the "teen drama" type of stories but this was enjoyable for all audiences. Like, DreamWorks knows how to appeal to all audiences more than Disney does. This was funny and colorful and could appeal to kids, but also preteens and teens can relate to it and enjoy it, and adults can enjoy it too. Literally, why would anyone hate this movie?
I agree with you 100%
I do understand when people say that it's like turning red and Luca combined but that doesn't mean it's the same as those movies. It does quite alot of things better, for the reasons you said. And I actually really liked Connor and Ruby's relationship.
Man this is the best review of this movie and i think a series of this amazing movie is gonna arrive 😊😊😊
I really hope this movie gets a sequel and a series! :D
My 6 year old daughter is obsessed with this movie. She watched it three times in a row in one day. It’s actually pretty good. Kinda wish there was a prequel about Agatha as I want to know more about her backstory as she was apparently a powerful warrior. My headcanon is because she apparently seen the other giant krakens die at the hands of the mermaids that maybe that played a role in her leaving with her husband Arthur and Ruby and Sam.
It was 15 years ago that they left the ocean behind. Sam is way too young for that.
Grandmamah all but confirms that A LOT of Krakens died while explaining Nerissa to Ruby. I don't blame Agatha for wanting to get her daughter out of the sea if shit like that goes down.
One year later and my opinion still stands
Finally a good solid and *considerate* point of view
I genuinely enjoyed the film. It could have done better with advertising and marketing, but it was a pleasant sit and watch. Ruby is an incredible protagonist with a lot of relatability. It may not be something new, but that does not mean it makes it bad. I wish more people would have given it a chance.
Everything you said about Ruby and Chelsea has touched My Heart. You were right, Ruby wouldn't be who she is without Chelsea. She saves Ruby's Life, and goes out of her way to help her with her emotional issues, she genuinely wants to be her friend, she wants to teach her how to have fun with herself, to be happy with herself, to have someone who can help her with her problems. Ruby and Chelsea's friendship moments are the Best part of the movie. It makes so happy to see Ruby and Chelsea becoming Best friends, exploring the ocean, smiling and having a blast. But it really breaks my heart when Chelsea staps Ruby in the back and betraying when she becomes Nerissa. I have high hopes that this movie will be getting a sequel, and I really hope Chelsea can redeem herself so she and Ruby can be besties again.

I dont care what anyone says, there is a reason i like this better than their precious Turning Red. The reason is mom's intentions were actually good, and not just lame excuses to make the world feel bad for her. One The Best Dreamworks Movie Ever Made
I agree this movie is good
And I really agree about everything you say About Agatha
I like that DreamWorks didn’t go With a strict and overprotective parents like Pixar did with Ming
They really toned it down, I think give more space to give her more of a Supportive and loving mother
Yeah she was a stricted about not letting her go to the prom in the ocean but she can change her mind and she accept her mistake everything she did was never sees as wrong she was trying to protected her family like every parents do
I always loved the way DreamWorks do their parents they never made them the same way all other movies do and they can make mistakes but they can accept that they were wrong and apologized to what they made as someone who grew with supportive parents it always annoyed me that supportive parents are barely in movies
30:21 Notice when Chelsea/Nerissa stabbed her the trident turns purple, she's stealing some of her power so she can grow bigger. That's pretty clever.
That was never touched upon though. Now I want to know more. I hope Dreamworks can give us more lore and salvage this in the series if it happens. But they will need to make A LOT of changes.

I bought the movie and love it.
I really love this film too. I agree with you. This film teaches a good lesson about putting the greater common good above your own personal fulfillments. There was a clear effort for this film to fix up all the flaws, dents, and damages, that Turning Red refused to fix. I honest to the Lord, think the intention of Dreamworks behind this was: “You know what? Turning Red is a very bad movie, and Luca didn’t get much chance to shine, so let’s rewrite Turning Red, make our own version of Luca, and then combine them as one.“ And oh man, did they make the right choice? Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is the superior film to turning red, it’s even more tolerable then Turning Red. This movie fixes almost everything from Turning Red, the mother, the besties, they even fixed the transforming beast as a symbol of the greater common good. They even added in a twist-villain.
Grandmama basically represents God, and Nerissa/Chelsea basically represents Satan. The cracking thing, it’s supposed to be like their own fictional religion. I think many religions like Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, etc. should get a good kick out of this film. Just films twist-villain actually fooled me up on my first viewing. The twist-villain trope still kind of works on me. I recommend watching Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken instead of Turning Red. Also, rest in peace Pixar, same thing with you, Disney after Turning Red, basically killed them. This movie made me feel so many emotions. Chelsea sold me in the trailer and even with the obvious plot; I still liked her and the moments between her and Ruby are great.
i loved this video and liteally saids everyting why i liked this movie, it was kinda hard for me to say that i liked this movie and even felt bad of myself since well, the place were i live mexico, the movie got hated more thanks to the dreamworks fanboys that overhyped this movie and use it as a type of humiliation to the live action little mermaid movie and thanks to that when the movie flop people started hating it more and making fun of the people that actually enjoy it, luckily i was able to find a really nice community that also liked the movie and have seen all the potencial it has, i just want to say thanks for making this video and i hope more people sees it and sees all the good stuff this movie has to offer.
As you got more depth on the matter: I am curious: *What* are some ideas or concepts from Ruby, that you think would be interesting to explore in terms of fanfics/comics?
As I said in the end definetly the world or the history or abilities of the Kraken. The movie introduces a super big world that it couldn't get too much into being a localized origin story but all of that can be explored so much especially with how it can integrate so many of the worlds oceanic histories or growing Ruby's character with her powerset. Or potentially more of her alienation from the world she grew up with, with her new responsibility. We've seen shows do this type of stuff very well with My Life as a Teenage Robot and Danny Phantom so Ruby could work so well with the same approach.
@@shadyblazeblizzardI mean, the only powers not touched on in the movie was super speed and invisibility... and well, being a teen movie, there's only really one direction for those xD
BUT: Those COULD likewise be very interesting to subvert... Rest would leave a lot to headcanon. But, could make good stories there too.
"How to human" or a sort of superhero arc do have potential... especially as other teen hero shows: Ruby DOES have a unique... not-weakness? Like: To take Danny and Jenny: They, and others kinda have pokemon type weakness. Ruby sorta has the opposite. As she can do "all" her powers on land. She's just... not a kaiju. So her "power level" is kinda the Shaggy meme. She's only using 1 %.
That could honestly be interesting. Like, "Come fight me at the beach! ... I'll show you!" xD
I hope they make a Sequel

The movie is OK, is just came out in a wrong time. It a sad pattern that DreamWorks doing.
Mad respect for this video. I myself really enjoyed this movie. Sure, it’s no masterpiece but I still like the film for what it is and similar to films like Spirit 1, Flushed Away, MVA and ROTG, it did not deserve to flop.
Ruby herself is easily the main highlight to me. She’s bubbly, adorable and just an absolute sweetheart; I just wanna squeeze her cheeks so badly. The amount of cuteness, charm and relatability she has made her my biggest Dreamworks crush. And this is ironic because her crush has my name and we both weren’t great at algebra, so it’s more authentic LOL. I would dare say that Ruby barely rivals Toothless as the cutest Dreamworks character ever.
Agatha’s a lovable mother, Brill is so much fun, Chelsea is quite an underrated villain and basically, there wasn’t a character I straight up disliked. The film has a really good soundtrack and even though it has a lot of licensed songs, they are still an absolute bop, especially Rise. The animation is great, the underwater scenes are colourful, and the final battle was cool for what it was. I also thought the movie was really well-paced. And I agree with many of the other positive elements you said in this video.
If I have any complaints, it would be that I did find it weird how no one questioned that Ruby and her family didn’t look normal, there were like a couple of continuity errors I noticed, and as much as I enjoyed the soundtrack, a couple of songs felt a bit out of place. And that’s pretty much all I can think of.
All in all, this movie was really enjoyable IMO and whereas Turning Red didn’t work much for me, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken definitely did. It is as of right now my 21st favourite out of all 44 Dreamworks movies and I would rate it an 8.5/10.
Once again, amazing video.
They claim to be Canadian, if anybody questions the family.
The movie wasn't bad but I think the conflict between Ruby and her mother could have resolved better. And the story was too fixated on the prom.
Early at the beginning and closer to the end doesn't seem at all 'fixated' as I observe it.
I'm just gonna come out and say it this is my favorite movie of 2023
Despite everything that happened, this movie could have been a little bit more epic. I also expected a harsh satire against Disney's mermaid. But this movie is funny and unique too. I love Ruby and Chelsea. I would like a sequel but... Idon't think so.
Well put those doubts away because we're gonna turn this movie into a cult-following!
@@nas0518 maybe
@@danielalejandrosolanorodri9869 And besides, the film's director, Kirk DeMicco said that he is interested in making another sequel of Ruby Gillman.
@@nas0518 Yes, sounds great. But I would like another director. If Kirk DeMicco makes that sequel, I hope something epic and wonderful.
@@danielalejandrosolanorodri9869 Yeah, even Lana Condor, the voice of Ruby Gillman wants a sequel too.
i havent love a dreamworks movie like this since home
It’s unique!
53:41 Dude, sweet Avatar reference there! 😎
You know when I saw this movie my first impression was that it was mediocre at best, but after seeing how someone can have so much passion for something that I had never even thought was possible it makes me appreciate the movie a little more, I guess now I can see more of the movies positive points, even if the movie is not my favorite
Nice to see someone else defending this movie.
Small note, Ruby’s giant Kraken form is 300ft actually.
Also Ruby’s friend Margot is gay. She mentions going to prom with someone named Kayla, she has rainbow zippers on her shirt, and at prom her bow is colored with a rainbow flag. Perhaps this is why Universal axed the marketing.
11:50 I see I’m not the only one. And I’ve been a fan of DW for most of my life.
Also as for the “fantasy race is evil” trope that people have criticized the movie for, and yes I wish it was more explored, but I’m not so sure that is what the movie portrays. The only character who pushed the mermaids are all evil narrative is Grandmama. Even Agatha just says “we left our home because of a mermaid.” And of course Ruby sparring Chelsea at the end of the movie. Maybe in a sequel Grandmama wants to wipe them out, but Ruby is the only one who can approach the issue with a fresh perspective.
Honestly, I think the movie creators didn’t know what they wanted to portray so they took the lazy way out and said mermaids are all evil and krakens are all good and that’s that.
Where did you get the 300 feet estimate?
@@ClickbaitThumbnailVillager it’s the statement made by articles and interviews. The director has said 300ft in at least one of them.
@@themythosarchives7520 to me, that's a ridiculous, she is most likely 100ft not flipping 300 ft like a Female MUTO or smth

As a fan of cecealia/cilophyte (octopus mermaid essentially), this was a bit of a dream come true for me! Ruby marks the milestone for the first film centered on a cecealia! =D
Thank you for saying a false god's name in vain. I heard Jane Fondah did some shady things though. A bit of a shame, as she does have a pretty unique voice. Thank you fir this wonderful breakdown! God bless and be with you and your household! ^u^
Best since no way home
22:50 most DreamWorks friend groups are just there to say funny pop culture references. They don't gotta do that much.
Imagine if Sam Gilman were secretly had a mothership extra terrestrial Kraken
I agree with this entire video. In fact I said a lot of the same things in my review of the movie I did a few weeks ago.
ua-cam.com/video/CtbORA2xfgQ/v-deo.html I’m even in the editing process of a follow-up video in which I will cover some of the storyboards and the possibility of a TV show.
Also your theory about Oppenheimer killing RGTK does make a lot of sense, which makes me feel weird since I saw that movie yesterday.
Seriously, this is the best review of RGTK I’ve come across so far and you did a good job editing (it even puts mine to shame LOL). I enjoyed the animatics too. I really hope the RGTK fandom grows if digital and disc sales go well.
Thanks for making this video.
I saw your review :)
It was cute 😊
IKR?! RUBY IN PARTICULAR WAS THE CUTEST! ☺️🥰🐙
THIS VIDEO IS SO AMAZING!! It really words well why I love the movie and why the criticisms don't make sense. I don't agree with your Chelsea take that like she was "too likeable to be a villain" because to me that was the point of her. I am glad they changed from the original draft of her being the daughter especially theme wise it fits better, and so many hints were given to Chelsea being evil in the film and towards her being Nerissa. I also feel if she was more mean and catty the betrayal against Ruby would not have hit so hard. Chelsea is my fav character in the film and she does not get enough credit, like her charm and charisma makes her such a compelling villain because you can see it coming but then they also subvert the expectations in the best way possible!! Like we are supposed to feel betrayed with Ruby so us falling for her charm is brilliant!! Also the line of Like "mermaids don't age" to me was more explaining why she is still so young looks wise.
With all due respect, I did not like Chelsea as a villain. I’ve seen so many people saying that there were hints that she was evil. But these hints just showed her as being then, and also ignored many other things that she did. She saved Ruby’s life, she helped Ruby come out of her shell, and embrace her monster side, she gave Ruby space, and she seemed to feel sad for Ruby when she told that she felt like a freak. It’s hard to fix that an animation. I’ve met toxic people in my life and none of them were remotely like Chelsea. All the toxic people that I’ve met would hurt me first and then pretend to care about me. I think that’s the case with most toxic people in real life. They don’t fake it so much as they expect you to go along with it.
I don't know why you responded to my love comment with this. She "saved" Ruby to get the trident plus those things would not have killed her only the trident can and she lied to make it seem like she did save her. She guilt tripped her not even a second later for not following her rules exactly. The bathroom scene she was never nice, she only said thinly veiled comments. Yes she was there when nobody else was but that was only to help her get more in tune with her kraken side so she could get Ruby to get the trident. She never cared for her once during the film it was all personal gain. I have met so many toxic people like Chelsea in fact she acted just like my narcissistic dad, everything she did was self serving. If Chelsea acted like she did not care it would make Ruby seem dumb, they did it subtle in this version but on rewatches you see how mean and horrible she is. There are so so sooo many hints, every scene and line she is mean and you can see the twist coming when you pay attention. That "sad look" yes could have been sympathy, but to me that was more worried her plan would fail and she had to act like she cared in front of Ruby or the façade and story she made would have broken and Ruby wouldn't trust her. You can have this opinion btw I just don't agree. Let's agree do disagree. (Please do not respond to this, I don't like arguing :))
@achinthmurali5207 Chelsea is written as a pure shock value twist , it's intentional she has no foreshadowing. She acts like an actual friend to Ruby even in the close-up camera shots, with Ruby not looking at her. (Chelsea isn't pure evil though, the director called their relationship 'nuanced' meaning she isn't devoid of human empathy). She's what's called a 'gotcha' twist. And yes it's very cheap and the 'stares' are downright narrative cheats, or "lying to the audience" as one would say.
is there proof the director said this? Because I do think that she is not just pure evil but she is also nowhere near good. But there were so many hints to her being evil in dialogue end her smirking in some scenes or making blank stares. Literally every shot you mean other characters were staring at her or Ruby was in eyesight of her, and she smirked and gave angry looks a lot when she looked away as well as so many scenes gave hints that she was evil such as her now showing to the house party, such as the timelines not adding up for her to remember her mom dying that young. Like I do think she did care for Ruby but in the end she had to get the Trident to give herself peace. You can think this I just feel you did not pay attention to the movie. You can feel this way but let's agree to disagree, I don't wanna argue :).@@scoutfan911
@@lovingfood_melodies I am sorry that you suffered narcissistic abuse from your dad. I won’t go into too much details but I know what that feels like. However, back to the movie while they were certainly tells that Chelsea was manipulating Ruby, they were also tells the Chelsea genuinely cared about Ruby. Like in the bathroom scene, the look of concern is hard to fake in animation. And yet that look means nothing to the plot. It feels like a bad red herring. Furthermore, if somebody saved your life. It’s hard to see that is manipulation. I believe that people should be judged by what they do, and not necessarily their intentions all the time. I don’t deny that Chelsea had toes, but the reveal that she was in fact a mermaid queen all along felt out of place. Also, I have met toxic people, but they were not like Ruby. Every toxic person I’ve met, was rude and disrespectful to me upfront and then later try to play it off. It’s a joke. I don’t know your story maybe you met people like Ruby before and maybe they hurt you. Again, I’m sorry for that. My comment wasn’t meant to be hateful or insensitive. It was just my opinion on why I think this movie missed the Mark. Also, I think that explaining narcissism instead of just saying that mermaids are narcissists just because would’ve been a lot better. Maybe her mother praised Chelsea so much that I gave her narcissism in grandiose sense. Or maybe she was abused by her mother, and come to for it by being narcissistic to humans. Many of the toxic people that I knew were either abused, or they were spoiled. That doesn’t justify their toxicity, but it explains it. There is no explanation in this story. Other than Chelsea is evil because mermaids are evil. That to me, it’s just lazy writing. Love and peace. I’m glad you enjoyed the movie even if I didn’t.
You should make a video about the movie is not copying turning red and Luca, this is because I see the movie take some inspiration from httyd and shrek more than copying Luca and turning red
Adding to the point I made earlier, if there was a movie where only the males in a family got super powers through genetics people would call it sexist.
However when it's the opposite people are fine with it. If someone is going to make a super power genetically exclusive to 1 gender then there has to be well throughout explanation besides this is what the writers want.
I mean, in Ruby Gillman's case, female members of some species growing larger than males happens in real life, even (e.g. sharks). The female characters being the ones with superpowers isn't really a problem if it's a female-led movie with a female protagonist that's set up to be that way in the first place, this isn't like the Disney Star Wars movies where preexisting characters get derailed to prop up a new character who got inserted in. Also, the movie (Ruby Gillman) never shat on the male characters just for being male.
@@WaspCameraInSpringfield Sorry this took so long.
Your missing the point. Both of these movies didn't need to make the super powers exclusive to female characters to work. They did it as a lazy excuse to keep the focus on the female characters.
These movies are just another example of female exclusivety in storytelling, which is basically when a story hypes up its female characters by side lining its male characters which bad because it sens a bad message that women are at the best when men no can challenge them.
As a writer I can say this, the 1 thing you shouldn't do in a fantasy world is make it that 1 gender is genetically superior to the other unless the point of the story is to explore the genetic differences.
Here is moives should have been written. Just say that that the magic powers only appear in a few family members and that solves all the problems.
Also the whole nature argument, is not s factor in this. This fiction and a writer choose what aspects of nature they want in there story.
@@lesterwilliamsjr649 "They did it as a lazy excuse to keep the focus on the female characters."
It's a female-led movie with a female title character, of course she's the main focus. This is as ridiculous as implying a Superman movie is misogynistic because he'll be stronger than all of the female characters.
@@WaspCameraInSpringfield
Why do you keep bringing up female led as your argument and she is the led? What are trying to say a female led movie needs to give women an advantage over men?
Just because something is female led doesn't mean you have to make a power exclusive to females.
It doesn't matter who the main characters gender is. If it's not needed for they story then you shouldn't make something genetically exclusive to a gender. We're talking about super powers male baldness.
Also your Super man comparison doesn't make sense. With Super man all members of his species have the same powers and also fights against and along side females with super powers.
You know all I want from these moives is a in universe reason why only the females have super powers either that or they could say the powers randomly in certain members.
Jake Long, The American Dragon did this so much better. In that show it explains some members of his family just never manifested powers.
PS: Thanks you for the interesting discussion.
@@lesterwilliamsjr649 I'm sorry, but your Superman rebuttal is autistic and asinine in the extreme. So by your logic, is every Superman movie that doesn't feature a female member of his species sexist by default? Not featuring one is certainly a specific choice. You seem to have an incredibly autistic grasp of purpose in storytelling. I've defended character-driven movies with male leads like Joker from accusations of misogyny for the same reason: if you are going to choose to have a male protagonist, the male character will be the most prominent in the movie. The same is true of female characters.
Also, you're flip-flopping hard. You asked for an in-universe explanation for Ruby's powers, I gave you one, and you rejected it. Which side of the fourth wall are you arguing from?
It's understandable to feel upset about the lack of good male role models for boys in fiction these days. But any responsible parent understands that girls need good role models too, and I think Ruby is an excellent character for that.
