Hat pins during the early 1900s grew to 14 plus inches. During the suffrage movement, police were afraid to break up picketing women for fear of being stabbed. Laws were introduced requiring hat pins to be limited to no more than 8 inches. This also played to the new bob hair style and much smaller hats.

I kinda wish we still had hatpins. When they were in vogue women also used it as self defence against harassers, especially when travelling alone. I often think of the painting The Irritating Gentleman by Berthold Woltze, and how with art imaging techniques they showed that the girl in the painting was holding a hat pin. There’s something poetic about this hidden hat pin. Like there’s a secret strength to the young girl. Tldr; I really like hat pins

For those of us with much shorter hair - you can loosely hand sew a bit of elastic thread through the front 1/2 or 2/3 of the inner hat band, then tie the ends together. then, when you put the hat on, stretch that bit of elastic around the back of your head. Holds on great even on windy days, and basically invisible especially if you sorta match the thread to your hair.

So while I do have a bunch of hat pins, I use them for other stuff, like pinning a too low-cut blouse or a quick skirt pleat. In those olden days, hair was longer. So buns were very thick and high on the head. The hats were also much bigger. So the hat pin had to go through them all.
If you had a thick braid in your bun, you don't need a very long hat pin.
Modern women of today have shorter hair. Princess Diana had short hair. She had little combs sewn into her hats. You can do this with your hats, whatever types and size, and the hat will be secure.

My mother told the story of her high school banning hat pins and metal nail files, in the early 1960s. And how upset my grandmother was that girls were being robbed of defensive tools.

Going to a car show and it was like extreme record wins and I had to use to have pins and I’m so glad I had both of them with me. Didn’t think I needed them but by the end of the night I kept my hair up that it started raining and I am really glad I had my hat pins

Do you have a tutorial on the hairdo that you are wearing here? You look lovely and it suit you so much. I got some hairpins last year but still haven't got a nice hat, need to find one soon 😊

My grandma used to tell stories about how she was sure her mom and aunts were sticking their hat pins into their heads, and how she didn’t understand how they could do it without screaming or crying.
