Lauren, good review as always. The power passenger seat (lack thereof) is a head scratcher, especially if you opt for the premium trims. Folding power side mirrors and 3rd row usb ports would have been nice on the top trim levels. I also read the comments about the seats from others in this forum. This new generation Highlander is vastly different in terms of comfort. I test drove this and my focus was on the hybrid model - which is a game changer for me in terms of their direct competition. I ended up purchasing the Platinum hybrid which checked off 90% of my boxes. Thank you for always educating folks on the new models I really appreciate your insights.
I think your review is pretty spot on. I do think however that a tad more emphasis on the MPG vs the competition is warranted. I am amazed at the possibility of 30+ MPG for such a large vehicle and although the competition may have a more space in the 3rd row, I just can get past the modern SUV only getting 19 MPG. Ford just came out with a hybrid Explorer and looking forward to your views on that one. Additionally, as more manufacturers are soon to come out with hybrids, I begin to question if they'll be a reliable as the Toyota brand who has championed the hybrids. Again, and respectfully, I think your reporting may understate this.
Yeah, the mpgs of some of these three rows are horrid. Had an Ascent and ditched it due to 14-16 mpgs over hilly city terrain mainly. Doubled my mpgs with Highlander Hybrid. If you consider Subaru sold 80,000 Ascents last year, that is just a massive difference in consumption and emissions overall if everyone doubles their mpgs. Like 25 million fewer gallons of gas burned and 250,000 tons less CO2. Just for one model of vehicle doubling its mpgs!
There’s a lot of sharing of technology these days it’s too expensive to keep it to yourself and not sell or share this technology both ways. You’re starting to see this a lot with many brands
Lauren, Great Review as always 👍 … how do you see the overall driving dynamics, noise level and ride quality of the Highlander Hybrid vs. RAV4 Hybrid ?
The power passenger seat is odd. Power fore and aft and seat back but no way to raise the whole seat. And neither front seat tilts. Heck, my Chevy Captiva has that function on the driver’s seat and it didn’t cost $50,000. And that large screen version of the infotainment/hvac controller is not intuitive. Thankfully the cheaper version in the XLE and LIMITED models is easier to navigate. Also it would have been nice to hear your thoughts on the second row bench seat comfort.

Thanks for sharing. I watched your video after I bought my 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE. I am very happy that I made a good decision to pick this one.
This hybrid is the top standard in SUV Hybrids, hands down. Getting over 30 in town and on the highway is a huge leap over the competition, and to be getting that starting around 38,000 compared to others makes it an easy choice.
Toyota Highlander is the most reliable brand! To give this a 77 proves a lack of knowledge of this brands reliability. This is the second video I’ve seen from this producer that downgrades Toyota. I assume some other brand is paying her paycheck . Maybe she should read consumer reports and watch the video from the car care nut who gives clear information about which vehicles are reliable.
That front end pic you showed was of a Highlander XSE trim...NOT available as a hybrid. If only every manufacturer was offering a hybrid version of their large, 3-row SUV. Nothing from Subaru, Honda, Mazda or Hyundai and Kia just barely qualify with the new Sorento. I have a 2021 Highlander Hybrid and can EASILY get into third row with 2nd row in my seating position, and my knees to not touch back of 2nd row seat at 6'2". Any child would fit easily in the back seat comfortably for long trips up to a height of probably 5'-5"3". I posted a video on that fact.
Had 2010 Highlander 3 rows, the second row middle seat was terrible, hard as a board. In my 2015 sienna’s second row middle seat was an improvement but not good. Are the second row middle seats ( jump seats)on the new Highlander or Sienna any better? Very good review.

Did you have any issues with filling the tank or the tank fueling to the stated capacity of 17.1 US gallons? It seems that the KIA or Hyundai is the way to go. Although the KIA and Hyundai are essentially the same vehicle, mechanics tend to agree that the KIA is more reliable; Hyundai on the other hand seems to look more luxurious. All three are quite reliable and make an excellent choice. My pick would be the Hyundai which sells for less than the Highlander and has more features. Next year there will be a hybrid for both KIA and Hyundai but the cheaper MSRP offsets any fuel savings in comparison to the highlander hybrid if you plan to drive it for 6-7 years.
The Highlander has been at the top of my list for a next-car for quite a while. I consider all areas of a vehicle and value-for-the-dollar with emphasis on what the vehicle will be worth in about six years. The Highlander (and the Honda Pilot) at the top of the list. But for me, there is one area that Toyota seems to completely disregard when it comes to exterior looks and that is the muffler and tail pipe's rear view on the Highlander. The overall exhaust system is not well "tucked up" and the muffler is fairly visible and looks like an oversized soup can. The very cheep looking tail pipe just exits below the bumper with no thought for aesthetics. This could be forgiven on some very low-end vehicles but Toyota asks top dollar ($51,000 for the Platinum) and a muffler/tail pipe/bumper combo that is the worst I've ever seen. Every other brand of SUV does a much better job with the treatment of the muffler/tail pipe/bumper area. Someone finally paid attention on the 2021 Highlander XSE model with a dressed up tail pipe and notched bumper but they didn't share that with the rest of the Highlander family. One of the first things I would do with a new Highlander is have a muffler shop improve the looks of at least the tail pipe. Every time I see how Toyota totally "cheeped out" in this very visible area of the Highlander, it makes me wonder what else did they "not get right"

Gasoline one maybe more reliable than hybrid
Every time I see how Toyota totally "cheeped out" in this very visible area of the Highlander, it makes me wonder what else did they "not get right"
Thanks for your perspective.
Tail pipe concerns. Lol. This isn’t a sports car.
48.4 cubic INCHES of storage lol
Your good
🙂
Mm
EDITING FAIL.
No facts but just opinions after opinions... You want to claim a "Noisy" or "Quiet" cabin at the least give your definition of what they are (i.e. decibels ..., compare to a library setting etc.), also your video coaches nothing more but sales blah! How does where Toyota place the Hybrid placard relevant (don't like it, heat it then relocate or remove it as simple as that) just another example of your opinionated video.
It looks like a tumor.
But I would own it, if given to me. I don't have to look at this hideous cuv when I'm driving it.
lol
