- Despite the boost to the economy that bloom enthusiasts can bring, Lake Elsinore public officials said that safety and conservation concerns are taking priority this year and that Walker Canyon will be closed this year. Shelby Nelson reports for KTLA 5 News at 5, Feb. 7, 2023.

This makes this town sound so confrontational and unfriendly! "Come see the beautiful flowers and we'll book you in jail." How about thinking OUTSIDE the box and celebrating what is naturally unique to the area? In Japan there are places that become very busy due to seasonal cherry blossoms, change in color of the maples, festivals, etc. They have buses and other transportation that takes people from designated parking spots into desired location to avoid traffic congestion. Use rope to create set pathways and post volunteers on the mountain to ensure that people stay on the paths. I'm sure some retirees in town would be willing to help.
They wanna use the budget money for themselves rather than using it for the community (in a constructive way like you stated), so while it's good in theory in reality local government doesn't care. If anything, they'd be more than happy to continue making steps to erase the concept of public land and have it morph into "we, the government, can deem when you can access YOUR land."

Serious crime should have as much attention.
If people stayed on the trails and didn’t trample flower beds, I’m sure it could be open. Also, people shouldn’t have been impeding the movement of traffic.

I guess the small businesses in Lake Elsinore don’t need the extra income. A lot of flower visitors get hungry, need gas, or just want to shop. Authoritarians in Lake Elsinore say just move along, go spend money in Corona or Temecula.
They also leave trash everywhere, trespass and block driveways, stomp on the flowers, and ruin landscape. It's not worth it.

This is the stupidest thing ever.. they spend all those resources, fire department, police, an entire press conference for some damn flowers. They want to take away something that people enjoy simply because of traffic. All the problems in society today they are focused on flowers.
More than just traffic. Littering and trampling of the flowers occurred too. It was a matter of some inconsiderate people ruining it for the rest of us. If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at those people.

Why give authority to these retards in the city hall to shut down one of the few reasons corona and Elsinore is even known for. That’s like Rome shutting down tours to the colleseum but even worse because super blooms only happen every so few years.
So finally there is a reason to go to Lake Elsinore and the city officials close the area.

Awesome, looks like Lake Elsinore has gotten an early start to their blooming season.
When I used to live in Palmdale, nearby the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, seemed like mid-March till mid-April is when their poppies would start to bloom.
We get them too but it's too early. We also got 17" of rain in one day & are still recovering.
Stay home don't come to Elsinore
Hopefully them closing helps the land recover without dumb people throwing garbage everywhere and trampling the flowers.

The state has no jurisdiction for some areas. Additionally, signs need to be posted along all road sites indicating the violation if parked.

I spent every summer in Lake Elsinore with my cousins who lived there in the 80's & 90's so much fun an being from Long Beach we always assumed it was so far but as an adult u realize it's not, it's the dam traffic that makes it feel that way 😩🤣

This is a public area. This is simply a strategic meltdown and the officials rather not deal with than deal with. Your trends comment is grossly displaced as there have always been flower enthusiast here in the west let alone this is a tourist attraction that bring in economic funds.
When you work for the government, you understand that this is a precursor and will later be used as a metric to reduce nature funding in the future due to it projecting that the trails will not be used as much in the future. Politics and chess go hand in hand.

Is it public property? If so, how can they keep you from visiting? We don't follow rules. We follow the law. You can't keep us from our public property. You can only be tresspassed from public property if you commit a crime. Your infrastructure issue is your problem. Build better exits. Put law enforcement out there for traffic control. This is going to happen every year. Get ahead of the problem.

I'm wondering if they'd let me get fairly close... close enough to be able to fly my drone over the flowers to get some good pictures and video. I really do understand how stupid people can be when all they want to do is tromp through the flowers to get selfies of themselves with their family. To hell with the flowers, to hell with people who have to live in the area...

There was a designated hiking trail but people still took their own needs and desires and did not follow the trail.

It’s totally unfair to restrict CA from enjoying our state flowers in full bloom. They could at least build parking structures or have cars park somewhere where there are buses taking sightseers to the poppies, like how Hearst Castle manages visitors’ cars. Trails can be created to have visitors only walk along those trails to see these flowers and not walk out of bounds, failure of which would be an immediate fine (with signs posted everywhere).
I live there several years and it was chaos some people would even defecate on site due to the lack of bathrooms. There were signs asking the public to remain on the trails but the people preferred to trample the flowers for instagram pictures.
This is why they closed it as a last resort.

It’s only a 50 minute drive from my house and I LOVE nature but I’m glad there closing this area off to protect it. I’ve seen plants and flowers destroyed by humans. So when it becomes a problem some things need to be done to stop the Disrespect by humans. Everything has a cause and effect.
Unfortunately, this announcement and the delivery, makes your town sound very unfriendly...especially the part about booking people who come to see the flowers and putting them in jail. There are so many ways to enable people to enjoy the unique and natural beauty in your area without this confrontational approach. I live in Japan and have seen how they accommodate for large numbers of people who come to see cherry blossoms, festivals, etc. Buses pick up people from designated parking areas to avoid congestion into the desired location. Rope is placed along pathways, volunteers guide people where they should or should not walk. So many different and welcoming ways around this when thinking outside the box...
@@kristinab1078 this has been going on for years and the city has tried to place signs so people know to stay on the trails. I’ve seen two years in a row where people park on the side of the I15 and cars are driving very fast so it’s a dangerous situation. Also people were leaving trash and some people were pooping there. And just check instagram, you can see all the people laying on top of the flowers for selfies.
I don’t blame the city for doing this because they really did try to open the area but people who were there did not respect nature.

Rangers can't stop people slowing/stopping on the freeways to look at the flowers

They can't be positioned every 100 feet which is what would be necessary

People like to complain because they can't go and see some flowers. Most people don't realize it was way more than just people on trails. People were stopping cars ON the freeway, emergency vehicles couldn't get through, hikers were injured, people were bitten by snakes, restaurants ran out of food, gas stations were out of gas, people were trespassing into other people's property, locals couldn't go about their daily lives... All so you could get a few pics for social media. Yeah I think I'll pass.
