My family moved to Astoria in 1941, when I was 4 years old. I joined the US Navy in 1955 when I was 18. My family moved away in 1957, when I was overseas. To this day, I have the fondest memories of growing up there. I am 76 years old now and live out on Long Island, but I miss the old Astoria. JohnC.
This song and video clip brought back some great memories. (I actually visited all the stores and places in this clip) Thanks! An "Astorian" since 1957 - the one thing I miss most about the neighborhood was the family feel on every block- everyone knew everyone. On a hot summer night all the chairs would come out and everyone would talk in front of their houses- heard some of the greatest stories that I still repeat haha. Kids would play outside all day long and honestly we were rarely "bored". When my brother and I heard the church bells from Most Precious Blood we knew Dad would shortly be coming home and it would be dinner time. Yes I remember!
I used to work at Pintchiks's paint store on Steinway street back in the late 80's. Does anyone remember the stores on Steinway street back then? Woolworths, Terry's, Star Pizza, Easy pickings and Persuasions clothing stores? Man how miss those days..
When I was a little girl.I wanted one of those Pintchick's painter hats.I popped the 1cent banana split balloon a couple of times at Woolworth's.Astoria theater on Saturdays or one of the many bowling allies.I still live in Astoria. They are finally renovating Astoria Pool completely no more patch jobs. They filled the diving pool in with cement a couple of years ago Thus far they have not removed the triple diving board. The food isn't to bad at the concession stand. The bees are still buzzing around those metal barrels they use for garbage cans. The pool didn't open last year it should open this season I can't wait.As a senior I get to go in earlier and dont have to wait on line we use the( Triboro Bridge side)entrance along the side of the pool.Where the diving pool used to be.
I missed Astoria. I remember a lot of these places. It's funny, when we lived there we couldn't wait to leave. But looking back on all the old videos makes me miss it. Hanging out on 30th Ave and on Steinway St. Taking the 30th Ave line into the city. Cutting class to hang out to go shopping. Take the bus home late at night after work. Man, those are the day I miss the most.
I was born 1976 & raised in Flushing but would spend nearly every weekend with my aunt Lori & her hubby Greek John... best times!! Love Astoria and old Flushing
My Daughter has been getting her hair done at Imagination since she was around 8 yrs old.Went to school with the owner's boys.OLMC.One of the few businesses owned and operated by Native Astorians.
What a great video. I grew up in Astoria 50's and 60's. What wonderful memories of a long ago time. How I miss Astoria and Loews. When I was very young we lived a few blocks from St Joseph's Church. This video is bringing back such happy, along with some very sad memories. How I miss the days of playing ball in the parks, playing hockey every day in the summer, the park swings. Oh...and Rizzo's pizza...we cannot forget that. Most of all I miss my family who are still in NY!
My mom was born in 1927 in the house my grandfather built on Bowery Bay Road. The road became an alley betwee 49th St and Hazen Street, the house ended up fronting on 49th. I was born in Astoria General and grew up on 49th. Nice Song & Memories.
I love looking at the pictures but i get sad thinking how much it changed . i remember lowes on steinway and 28 th ave genovese to many places to list nice video thank you
What a great video. I lived in Astoria from 1963 till 1974. I go back often to visit family and friends. It was a great place to grow up. Everyone knew everybody throughout the neighbourhood. AS a kid I remember stick ball, box bal, ringalario, and so many other games. Thanks for sharing..
I left in the 80's and came back around 9-11 to help my parents, now both gone. the Astoria in the song no longer exists. Taken over by Manhattan Hollywood types you can't park on Shor Blvd anymore no 24 places anymore, COVID anymore.. Sad.. lke the song
we had a wonderfull childhood growing up in Astoria. The pal closed off 38 st between broadway and 31 ave in the summer for 2 weeks in the summer so we could play in the street.I went to PS 6 which is gone now but not forgotton, The movie of the theaters brought back memories of good times.
They still do it to this day on 31st Ave between 33rd St and 38th St for the kids;Police Athletic League still organizes it.I still live in Astoria. They finally doing a full renovation on Astoria pool it's been closed for almost a year I can't wait to see the results. You can take the kid out of Astoria but you can never take Astoria out of the kid.
Great video! Loved it! Grew up in Astoria in the 50's and 60's. Great memories of Astoria and Loews Theaters, the Ice Cream Parlor, Johnny's Candy Store, the many deli's...so many great memories! Thanks for posting.
Great memories of Astoria. I have been here all my life and grew up here in the seventies and eightees. Before hanging out at the astoria park strip climbing the hell gate bridge was the thing to do for us in marine terrace. In the sixtees astoria park was referred to as pill hill. Anyone remember the Parkside Gents?
I do remember the Parkside Gents! I run an Astoria group on Facebook. If you were involved with the PG, I'd like to hear from you (begin by replying here). I want to compile a history of them.
I lived in Astoria from 1974 to 2002. I enjoyed living and growing up in Astoria especially going to Steinway Street. The only thing I didn't enjoy was living in crappy and damaged apartments that were very unhealthy and hazardous. I appreciate and I thank you for sharing this lovely video that brought back memories. I don't live in Astoria anymore, but I still live in the 5 boroughs of NYC. I love NY and would never move anywhere else.
John Joseph Callahan I too joined the navy and my parents also moved out of Astoria while I was away. I'm 73 now and last time I visited Astoria was maybe 8 years ago: it's really changed in some ways, but seeing the park, the bridges, my schools and church took me right back to childhood and youth.
Nice tribute. I would have liked to have seen Susan terry’s, broadway lanes, ditmars billiards, bartunek hardware, (established in 1925 and still there. Almost 100 years old) Hoyt park, crystal gardens from 27-29 st on 24th ave. They used to have fountains and benches in the backyard. They even had doorman. Anyone with pics, PLEEEEEEASE post them or let me know how I can find them ‘cause I’ve been looking around for years and not a single photo.
I dedicate this song to Karen Lee A---r who lives in her grandma's rent stabilized apt in Astoria...wonder if she got a gecko to eat the German cucaraches. Karen's grandma paid for her MSW at NYU. Another acquaintance Diana S---s father owned Greek diners and paid for medical school in Colorado.
Lol. Wow someone else remembers Fishbein's. Your probably too young to remember when the store was actually opened. I used to buy candy there to eat at Astoria park. it was in walking distances.
@@nyangel515 I remember Fishbein’s. Parisi Bros. Bakery- B'way & 31st. St. - We left Astoria 36 years ago, and NY entirely 22 years ago, and to this day my 98 year-old mother STILL often says that she wishes she could get some Parisi Italian bread!
I'll send you some overnight express just send me details.I send my brother in Florida bread every month Freeze it and room thaw it when your ready to eat it no need to warm it up .Take it out of the freezer around 7 am it will be soft and room temperature by noon and taste as delicious as the day it was baked. When ever I travel I take my Parisi bread🥖 along.Nothing like NY bread especially Parisi's
