Very good cup of coffee. Last year I started to focus more on an edible landscape. I planted Hostas about 4 years ago. Last year I split them because there were so many. This is when I learned that I could eat the shoots. This spring I intend on harvesting. I need this video. Thanks for sharing.
Yay! We have a bunch that come with our home. We appreciate the leaves, but i dislike the floppy flowers. Being able to eat them may help me appreciate them more!
We just discovered the other day that hostas are edible. Who knew?! We live in Ontario Canada and these plants thrive in our climate. We have at least 70 different types of Hosta on our property. Unfortunately, we aren’t good at remembering the types! We look forward to a little harvesting and cooking. Thanks for your tips! Very helpful!
Thank you so much I've missed the shoots but flower buds are just starting. So I will try me out. I have lime green with dark outside band leaves, and a blue green, and green with white outside bands.
Oh but I DO! I felt the same way years ago. I had so many hostas that I didn't know what to do with them. Finding out they were edible opened so many doors!
I have hosted all over at my home. Never knew they were edible! Have variegated and regular. Tried eating a raw shoot today! Quite a bit like asparagus. I like! Now have another food source along with my garden!
Me 2 I really wanted the forging guide for Christmas but nobody got it for me I’m very excited to see that mine is edible too I think olive oil and garlic salt is supposed to make them like a chip
I wonder what the reason was? Do you have any food allergies? It might be related to something your allergic too, or could just be that your body isn’t used to eating that type of plant! A huge chunk of people have lost their natural defense against a lot of plants simply due to not eating them for a generation or two.
Thanks for the great questions! I try to pull them from the base whenever possible but, if the shoots are buried deeply I cut them. I haven't seen much difference in recovery, since my mature plants are very nearly unstoppable. As for raw vs. cooked, I always cook them when eating in any quantity. They can be a little slimy, and more bitter, when you eat them raw, but the sliminess goes away entirely with cooking and the bitterness is less strong. I haven't eaten them raw in any quantity, so I wouldn't be able to speak to that. I would be surprised if they were bad for you raw, but you would want to take it very slowly if you decided to try them that way! In other words, I would advise some caution. ;)
@@karlsfoodforestgarden6963 Sorry for misunderstand .That was not a question it was my statement. I eat them cook and raw but I do like them very young . They get bitter when to mature

I eat all the asparagus that grow in my garden, raw and enjoy the taste better than cooked.
Fun fact: Hostas are in the Asparagaceae family, which is why they taste so similar to asparagus! Happy munching!
Nice now that I know that I can eat the flowers/first leaves I'll definitely try them out. Can we eat the root?

Is best to cut them with the knife .They do not need to be cook at all you can eat them raw .
Thanks for the great questions!

This is the most tedious guy to listen to. He hmms and haws, not giving straightforward info. Too much droning. Get to the point already!
Oh yeah.
