    Meet Your Inner Dolphin!
    Find someone to watch you while you do this
    (never hold your breath alone under water - even if it is a small reservoir!)
    1. Fill a container with cold water and ice cubes
    2. Immerse your face in the water.
    3. Hold your breath and notice how your heart rate drops
    (even better if you measure it with a heart rate monitor)
    4. Repeat it once more after a small pause
    Tip: If you are alone, place a cold, wet washcloth on your face instead of immersing your face in water

    What is the Mammalian Dive Response?
    The Mammalian Dive Response is a set of reflexes that are activated when the body experiences or expects a lower level of oxygen. Holding our breath is one of the triggers that can cause the body to activate this inner dolphin.
    During this reflex, the following changes will occur in the body - even on dry land:
    Your heart rate will slow down between 10-30% (or even higher) of it’s normal rate (Bradycardia)
    Reduced blood flow to the limbs to ensure that the most vital and oxygen-hungry organs, such as the heart and the brain, continue to receive oxygen (Peripheral vasoconstriction)
    Increase in red blood cells as a result of the spleen contracting (Splenic contraction)
    When we immerse our face in cold water, the sensory information is transmitted by the trigeminal facial nerves to the brain, which in turn innervates the vagus nerve to start the Mammalian Dive Reflex. The colder the water, the faster the response.
