I love this era. The people were polite and simple folk. Just being themselves. I was 12 when this was aired. It was one of my favorite shows. By the by. A thousand dollars in 1957 would be about $9400 today.
@@arcmayAskvanpay I found an entry for Donald R. Davis, a lepidopterist (butterfly specialist) who was born in 1934, and is still alive. If this is the same guy, he was only about 23 years old when this episode appeared. Could it possibly be the same guy? (On second thought, it's probably not him, as this contestant said he went to UCLA and Berkley, while the Donald Davis on Wikipedia attended the University of Kansas and Cornell University. And, on top of that, Don Davis must have been well over 23 when he appeared on this show.) *That said, he still really looked and sounded like Wally Cox!*
I'd like to know how many people who met on this show actually went on to get married. Also... Don's an untapped comedy character resource. Amateur entomologist one-man band straight man. Gold.
What a wonderful glimpse of America in the 1950s, Churchill said: “History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days."
That's one of the main reasons I love this series. As much of a Groucho fan as I am, he's not always in peak form in these shows. You can tell when the contestants stimulate him to ad lib vs when he's falling back too heavily on the corny prewritten jokes he always had available to him. But it's always fascinating to me to see the parade of ordinary folks they had as contestants over the years, because unlike other game shows, the focus here was on conversation, so you really get a glimpse into 50s and early 60s America that you can't get anywhere else. Thanks for the comment!
Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life A bygone era indeed. Not only for America but for the world in general. People were well mannered, polite and not shabbily dressed.
Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life What this conversations also reveals, is that the "ordinary folks" are not that ordinary at all ! ;). Many are *very* interesting, and some are just hilarious! ;D
SuperWinterborn Oh yes, though by "ordinary" I just mean "non-celebrity". The truth is, YBYL contestants were screened very thoroughly, either for their personalities or an interesting background, so they're not exactly "average" people in that respect. .

Seriously? You're really his grandson? What a delight to get a comment from you. I don't really know anything about him beyond what's in the Wikipedia article-- I don't know how old you are, so forgive my asking in ignorance if you ever met him personally/remember him? He was quite a fascinating character-- he was also a mystery guest on an episode of the BBC version of "What's My Line" a few years before this show!
That is so marvelous that he was your grandfather!! Thank you for sharing that information. I agree. Did you ever have the pleasure of meeting him? If you did, I have no doubt it was an unforgettable experience. Many thanks and blessings!
Sister Veronica thank you sister my father now passed used to tell me about prince monolulu today i googled his name. bless u sister please add me on facebook my name is ians Mikhail
It might be hard to tell because it's black and white, but their are mixed race pairs regularly. People from all over the world. Iran, India, Egypt, Korea... all with the same flirty banter. And I remember an episode in particular, with a caucasian woman and a black boy. The boy even sat on groucho's lap. But you might be right that there haven't been any black/white "couples". Probably because he would been strung up higher than the duck, showing something like that on TV at that time.
Your right Lori Hansen I noticed that too with all the flirting and innuendo you saw on 'you bet you're life ' I never saw ONE inter racial couple on any of the episodes
MANY people of ethnicity background said that. My Polish grandmother and her gand all said it. It is used today only because it is ridden off of these immigrants back in the day. Had nothing to do wiht ahead of time.
Thank you for sharing the greatest show on earth……..❤ Groucho 😊
How much we have lost in the last 65 years. So sad. Love this show- it’s still so funny.
This episode is one of my favorites. All the characters are hilariously funny. Groucho of course is tops 👍😂
You can't find entertainment like this today.

Great interaction between Don Davis and Groucho. Hilarious dry wit from both. Thanks for posting.
Betina is hilarious!
Lmao. "A guy behind you with a net" Groucho was so witty.
I love this episode
The Italian couple is hilarious
Of course, lots of talk about great food! 😘😋🤗
Thanks so much for taking the time and trouble to post these irreplaceable shows starring the irreplaceable Groucho Marx and George Fenneman.
The prince was born too early. He could easily have been the star of a TV sitcom in the 1970s.
Grouch was spot on, that guy DID look like Wally Cox! this is one of the more entertaining episodes, for sure....

The prince was a well known face in east London, he was big in horse racing circles.
Groucho must recruit these contestants. Lol

Can you imagine a TV show these days asking guests to come back the next week because time is up? Would be a raucous
You Bet Your Life - Episode #1 is the prior episode (0726 - 03/21/1957).
Prince Honolulu was great. Spion Kop 1920 Epsom Derby he tipped.

I can fully understand Groucho addressing the first guy as Wally Cox, in fact I’m sure it really was him!
The first guy with the glasses = Sheldon Cooper
Why are you unable to post the complete episode? I hate it when you guys edit out beginnings and ends of TV show episodes.

I love Wally cox but oh that is not his name is it? Funny man.
Warning: You don't need college to go camping!

Did you ever notice that two black people always appear together? In other words, they never have a pair of different races talking to Groucho.
