Hey all, I wanted to do two videos on Archthrones. The first is this, the boss ranking, and next month, and depending on how this video does, I'll have an Archthrone (Area) ranking in the works. Also just want to shout out my newest channel member: Sleipnir - The next few videos have already been pre-edited, meaning I can't add their name to the ending graphics just yet, but they're in the description ^^
Can't wait, I haven't played Archthrones yet but hearing the game was Demons Souls style made me assume the levels were..short lol. But this many bosses in only the first level of each Archthrone? Sweet
I really hope you'll do a ranking of the areas next month! I have a few hours in, and places like Carthus and both the revamped DS2 areas blew me away.
12:25 fun enough, its the other way arround, the "dark serpent" was originally a cut content enemy from Dark souls 3 which got reskinned and added to elden ring with some tweaks to not waste resources, so yes, this boss is more or less accurate of what fromsoftware originally imagined for this creature. Its not a coincidence how the skeleton of the Ulcerated tree spirit fits so well with the appearence of the pus of man with gundyr style hands
Honestly, that's pretty iconic then. I do still feel that the arena could use a bit of redecorating to accommodate for the pus-of-man form, but knowing this mod is really trying to restore a lot of cut content is always refreshing.
Fun fact skoll and hati are the names of two wolves from norse mythology that are said to chase the sun and moon and finally capture them at some point.
He killed me the most. Problem is you don't realize he's Vaati because he has a voice line the first time you enter the boss & then one voice line when you kill him. But it doesn't play again if you die.
It's basically a Frankenstein-style overhaul of Dark Souls III - For example, the first two areas are reskins of Undead Settlement & Cathedral of the Deep, but with entirely new graphics, some new paths, totally new enemies, etc. But then you get to Carthus and you're just like "How did they do this???"
While im not the biggest fun of some mechanics overall the mod was very creative and fun with its ideas, its a huge step up in the ds modding community wich i hope will improve even further!
I don't think I clicked with the Sekiro-inspired mechanics all that much. But bringing over the shield counters & the physic flask from Elden Ring was a stroke of genius.
Loved the video, thanks for all the feedback ^^ Fun fact: besides the obvious tower knight influence, the biggest inspiration for the siege golem (gameplay wise) was actually the armor spider! Always loved the idea of a projectile based boss fight in a long corridor and wanted to recreate that somehow in a way that suits ds3.
Oh, I actually love that. Armour Spider is one of those bosses I always felt was quite underrated by the fanbase, and the corridor-style arena had so much potential. Definitely gives the Siege Golem a little boost from me knowing that ^^
I love seeing your take on this! I personally love to make rankings of bosses in these games. My personal top 5 for goodness was: 1. Angelic Siege Golem 2. Aldrich, Saint of the Deep 3. Rimeblood Halti and Greatwolf Skoll 4. Necromancer Obediah 5. Angels of Gertrude It’s fun to see how different preferences shape opinions of the same bosses
One game-design thing I loved about Obediah's fight is that killing the skeletons damages the boss. This nearly erases that akward period of time, where you killing minions and actually hurting the boss.
Oh wow, I'm not sure how I didn't notice that while watching back the footage. Honestly, that's such a fantastic design decision, because the damage isn't so much that it weakens Obediah too much, but is enough that it rewards the player for their work.
Personally I loved the areas introduced in archthrones but the enemies and the bosses felt extremely overtuned especially in elyuem loyce and I could'nt find it in me to kill all the bosses as I just cant spend 2 hours fighting an overtuned version of a boss that ive already fought before knowing this is a mod I cant blame the devs for resuing assets even tho what they did with angelic seige golem and some other bosses were phenominal combining different bosses into one made them feel unique but I would be willig to go through this if the rehashed bosses took like 10 tries or less to beat and the game was more balanced.Lets see what they do with the full release
I definitely think there's a balancing issue. Comparing Archthrones to Demon's Souls, it doesn't quite have that same freedom, as in Demon's Souls, each of the first areas are all roughly the same difficulty. Here, there's a clear progression path (War-Torn Village, Cathedral, Carthus, Heide, Eleum Loyce), which is fine, but even then the scaling feels off. I think with more people trying the demo, they'll be able to fine-tune the difficulty as they go.
shoutout to the music bro the Archthrones OST goes so hard! While I agree with most placements, I would absolutely not place the Phoenix that high, The spectacle is top notch and his first phase is pretty good but his second phase is absolute garbage, He barely goes to the ground and give you any chance to attack, he has so many ranged options, extremely fast, too much damage and overall extremely unbalanced, and even so his fight is just not as enjoyable as many others, which makes me extremely sad because this could've been the best fight if it was properly balanced.
The deflect mechanic is lowkey useful against enemies or bosses like Disgraced knight, as you can easily just lock them into spamming it until their posture is broken via greatswords. Takes me roughly 5-6 hits
30:23 or you could do what I did: finally learn how to parry with a shield. Flynn is the first boss I ever parried in any Soulsborne game. And it was an extremely fun experience! His parry timing is a simple 1 2 (parry on the 2), and most of his attacks can be parried. I had the greatsword you get from the Gertrude Angels soul and that magic deflection shield you can find in the cathedral of the deep. From experience, I can tell you, the magic deflection on that shield also extends the parry window of it. It's the best shield for parrying in the demo. Also, I took off all my armor to have the fastest roll. With this setup, I did 10 parries in this pattern: first parry, 1 slash while he is staggered, second parry, reposte, run away, repeat. Once the pretty balanced parries of this demo clicked with me on Flynn, I parried most of the bosses I encountered after him. That was fun! Really fun!!! Why the parries in the Souls trilogy couldn't be as fun as in this demo? Even in Elden Ring parries are stupid most of the time. FromSoftware just can't make the timings right, I guess.
Omen of the eclipse is literally just Godfrey + tree spirit lmao, i hope all the re skin bosse eventually get their own moveset like the great deep accursed as well
Honestly, I'd like a better version of the Threaded Cane. Perhaps instead of a cane, two small dual swords that trick weapon into two large dual-wielding whips. Mainly for crowdcontrol purposes.
On the topic of easy bosses a bit of it definitely comes down to weapon choice. I ran flamberge for the first half of the game and the lightning greatsword with the name I forgot for the 2nd half. Chaos, accursed, and pus were all very easily stunlocked by just using the heavy attack with these weapons. Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean they fit the 'easy boss' role, but it does go to show that the mod seems to be more balanced around certain weapons. I think the big struggle with difficulty comes from how open the mod is. Not having chapters to the archstones means they can't really do it demon's souls style where difficulty increases with sections rather than archstones so it feels like it wants to be DS1 style where some areas are just harder than others so you're intended to do them later. Despite this it seems to still want you to play demon's style of doing all the archstones at once. As a result it kinda feels like it wants you to explore all the archstones before even trying a boss which is weird. I think the best way to handle it, unless there's chapters in the full game, would be to make more of the archstones like loyce. Give them a first boss that you HAVE to beat before the rest of the archstone opens up and make that one the easy boss.
Agreed on all fronts - I find it interesting that the game forces you to visit the War-torn Village as your first archthrone, but once you've gone there once, all the other Archthrones immediately open up for you. It's so open, perhaps to a fault, as it becomes a bit overwhelming trying to figure out where to go and what to do next. After playing, it's clear the progression path is War Torn Village, Cathedral, Carthus, Heide then Eleum Loyce. But since I went in with the Demon's Souls mentality that the first area of each Archstone would be balanced around each other, I didn't realize that at first. It's not a bad way for them to do progression, it's just different from the main source material they're pulling from.
I knew this mod has existed for a bit now, but didn’t know much about it. However, it looks insane! Even though a lot of assets are stolen, they’re animated and used in a different way really well. Love this!
31:44 Ha-ha-ha-hahahahaha!!! Yeah, right! Flynn: “Ah! Warrior, your mastery of the blade is truly beautiful! Just as beautiful as this wondrous display on this perfectly flat shield. The design on this shield depicts a warrior, just as great as you, looking over the beautiful mountains of the Land of Reeds. This display on a plate, a Displate, if you will, ha-ha, is the work of the great artist of a smith named Spon Soar. And I could part with it for a small sum of 10 000 souls. A great, great deal, if I may say so myself.” Would you buy?
man i dont think ive ever disagreed with a boss list harder (for context i was a pure roll build using old greatsword only until switching to necromancers blade for all of eleom loyce + aldrich and phoenix, with the only consumable i used being occasional embers), im more of a gameplay first kinda guy so i hated phoenix, disliked aldrich for its annoying gameplay, didnt like janara bc it felt a little too oppressive and was the hardest boss for me, and my favorite bosses being the owl based boss, vaati (its crazy how a sekiro based fight was actually super fun with a goddamn old greatsword roll strat), necromancer, silver knight, and kremel even if i have my issues with it, if i had to pick a fav it would have to be between disgraced knight and vaati
Totally fair - I do think Janara could have her damage toned down slightly to make her less oppressive, but given she's a glass cannon as far as HP goes, I'm not sure if that would break her balance completely. And I totally understand why people dislike Phoenix. It's a deeply flawed fight, but I absolutely adored it's cinematic elements, and I'd love to see them keep working at the fight to make it as balanced and enjoyable as possible. At least we're on the same page with bosses like Vaati, Necromancer & Kremmel ^^
@@BillySYT maybe the janara thing was a me specific problem bc i switched to a new weapon for it that may not have been up to par for what the game wanted, so i didnt get that glass cannon fight, i would do the boss refight but for some reason in not able to
I haven't played the Nioh games, but I will get around to them eventually. I have a few Souls-likes I want to cover for the channel, I just haven't had the time.
I'm not sure. I don't really know how many people in my community have actually played the mod, so I wouldn't watn to host it, only to get an extremely small sample size.
This mod is amazing, and truly feels like a new game. I wonder if the modders will use their experience and the attention this mod gets to make their own Souls like. The exploration of the new zones is amazing, though I must admit I didn't vibe with a lot of the bosses. I completely agree that the first zone needs to tone down the boss difficulty, and bosses being able to deflect your attacks works in Sekiro, but is too punishing and straight up unsatisfying here. Also, the mod is way too stingy with stamina, which especially makes fights with Sekiro movesets feel mike battles against the stamina bar more so than enjoyable duels. Finally, it felt like too many boss attacks send you flying to the ground. Kremmel to me was the worst offender as it felt like every one of his attacks knocked you down. Once I learned his moveset I found the fight enjoyable, but spending half the fight on the ground while learning his moveset was not enjoyable. Otherwise, the mod was an absolute blast. Also, the Phoenix glitched out for me and fell off the arena, which honestly made me cheer out loud because I was so done with that fight at that point :P
Agreed when it comes to stamina. I definitely noticed moreso in Archthrones than any other Souls game, when I was out of stamina. The problem was that for the build I wanted, I needed to level my health to survive attacks, and my equip load, which meant I didn't have a lot of levels left to put into stamina. And I felt that as the game progressed. I want to enjoy the Sekiro aspects more than I do, especially regarding the bosses.
Honestly, leveling stamina is hardly worth it considering how little you get per level. I just gave up leveling stamina at one point. Upping the base stamina and giving a bit more bang for your buck when leveling stam would go a long way to make the more hectic boss fights more enjoyable. Few things feel worse than perfectly dodging a combo only to not be able to attack because of a depleted stamina bar.
I'm aware that his main moveset is based on the one-armed ninjas, I was just pointing out that a lot of his larger wind-scale attacks are more remniscent of the Ashina arts Isshin uses ^^
Imma be real... the Heide Pheonix is my absolute least favorite fight in the entire mod. The point you made about it having next to no downtime between attacks is the main issue here, as you generally do not get any proper openings to directly attack it for more than a R1 AT BEST even on builds that utilize faster weapons (I was using a Katana for this fight) and have massive portions of the fight that give you no proper openings for minutes at a time in phase 2. Phase 1 becomes an exercise of trying your hardest to find an opening among an onslaught of constant melee attacks with tiny/no punish windows only to have the boss either kick you in the face for daring to take your turn or flying away to the other end of the arena to annoy you, while phase 2 is just a test of patience as you wait for the boss to give you any opening whatsoever to no avail I genuinely gave up on this fight and uninstalled the mod entirely after struggling to survive in phase 1's melee onslaught and getting nothing done in phase 2 for a few hours, and it was the most miserable I have ever felt playing a souls game
Totally fair - I know that my love of the Heide Phoenix is very much a hot take, and I totally sympathize & understand why people don't gel with it. There's a lot of frustration that comes with being unable to hit it half the time - It just NEEDS more downtime.
Heyo, one of the devs here. The phoenix will be seeing some major changes in the full version of the mod, mostly related to downtime after attacks in phase 2 and overall clarity. The fight was meant to resemble a hunt where you chase down the beast while it's trying to fly away (and you can actually defeat it pretty quickly if you fight it this way!), but I've clearly dropped the ball on making it obvious that's what you're supposed to do by making pretty much the whole phase 2 overly punishing (and even then some attacks are just a bit too much), so apologies for that. Hopefully you'll enjoy the fight more once the full version of the mod is out ^^
@bazyleeshek At least your keenly aware of what would need changes :D. Honestly, the main thing I'd want to see in phase 2 would be for the Pheonix to go for its melee attack options more often. When I was doing attempts at phase 2, it genuinely felt like the only semi consistent opening it gave was it either randomly deciding to sit still for a few seconds (which rarely happened), it going in for melee strikes (which happened even more rarely), and it's giant explosion attack (which it tended to do too far away for me to get a meaningful punish with unless I used the Keeper's Blade's weapon skill, which I failed to take advantage of due to sheer frustration). Aside from this one boss though (who is at the very least an impressive visual spectacle) , I do think you guys did an excellent job with this mod as a whole. It is extremely impressive what you guys have created so far and I am very excited to see how the final mod shapes up. Absolutely fantastic work!
The mod doesn't have a concrete release date. I wouldn't expect it until 2025 at the earliest, with the amount of work they have planned for the full thing. But there's enough content in the demo to last people a long while.
@@BillySYT it is great that you answered me. I want to ask you something. You lately did a Bloodborne video where your community ranks all the bosses. I don't think it's possible for this type of mod to move to console, I'm afraid. If you ever get the chance to download DS3 on PC, it's well worth the playthrough. But if not, I'll try my best to cover the mod in full when it eventually gets a full release ^^

I cheesed Janara with fire bombs
Sucks that they can’t put mods like this out on the ps5
flynn is not based on isshin, hes based on the ninja guys from sekiro, the purple ones
I'm aware that his main moveset is based on the one-armed ninjas, I was just pointing out that a lot of his larger wind-scale attacks are more remniscent of the Ashina arts Isshin uses ^^
@@BillySYT oh ye agree
Keeper has the lone shadow moveset
i tyink demon vanguard second phase is based off of the rotten.
I wish I had a pc to play this so bad
bro if i bought ds3 on steam and not ps4 i wouldve played this by now
Imma be real... the Heide Pheonix is my absolute least favorite fight in the entire mod. Phase 1 becomes an exercise of trying your hardest to find an opening among an onslaught of constant melee attacks with tiny/no punish windows only to have the boss either kick you in the face for daring to take your turn or flying away to the other end of the arena to annoy you, while phase 2 is just a test of patience as you wait for the boss to give you any opening whatsoever to no avail
I genuinely gave up on this fight and uninstalled the mod entirely after struggling to survive in phase 1's melee onslaught and getting nothing done in phase 2 for a few hours, and it was the most miserable I have ever felt playing a souls game
If this could be ported to Xbox, then shut up and take my money. This looks so cool
I'm shocked to see Aldrich and Klimt so high. The second phase of both bosses is a tedious, miserable stat check.
That wasn't how I experienced either of those fights myself, but people connect with different aspects of the game/fights, so I'm not surprised.
Man I got here early
Convergence mod boss rank?
I'll think about it. I wouldn't mind diving into more mods, just gives me more to talk about.
So is this a demo of a mod and not a comolete one???
When does it release?
The mod doesn't have a concrete release date. I wouldn't expect it until 2025 at the earliest, with the amount of work they have planned for the full thing. But there's enough content in the demo to last people a long while.
@@BillySYT it is great that you answered me. I want to ask you something. You lately did a Bloodborne video where your community ranks all the bosses. I just wrote a comment where I hint at my own Blood Starved Beast fight on my Yt channel. Idk if you are ok with that if I kind of ad myself on your Yt channel. I'm not even at UA-camr. It is just a hilarious clip which stays in contrast with your own quote "bsb can't be cheesed". I can delete my comment if you mind.
Would love to play this but I’m on console 😢hopefully it will come to console soon 🤞
I don't think it's possible for this type of mod to move to console, I'm afraid. If you ever get the chance to download DS3 on PC, it's well worth the playthrough. But if not, I'll try my best to cover the mod in full when it eventually gets a full release ^^
There is no way the hide phoenix is number 2, that guy sucks big time 😅
Interesting 😂😂😂
Gonna be honest I just used this video as a list of bosses but dude you have to genuinely be on somethings this list is almost 100% backwards lmaoo
29:20 it's not Isshin Ashina, it's seven shadows but oh well, all bosses in here are just cool reskins anyway
What
You almost sound like you're afraid of criticizing the boss in some parts of the video.
